Conservative Politics, 'Low-Effort' Thinking Linked In New Study

Conservatives Lowthought

Conservatives and liberals don't seem to agree about much, and they might not agree about recent studies linking conservatism to low intelligence and "low-effort" thinking.

As The Huffington Post reported in February, a study published in the journal "Psychological Science" showed that children who score low on intelligence tests gravitate toward socially conservative political views in adulthood--perhaps because conservative ideologies stress "structure and order" that make it easier to understand a complicated world.

Ouch.

And now there's the new study linking conservative ideologies to "low-effort" thinking.

"People endorse conservative ideology more when they have to give a first or fast response," the study's lead author, University of Arkansas psychologist Dr. Scott Eidelman, said in a written statement released by the university.

Does the finding suggest that conservatives are lazy thinkers?

"Not quite," Dr. Eidelman told The Huffington Post in an email. "Our research shows that low-effort thought promotes political conservatism, not that political conservatives use low-effort thinking."

For the study, a team of psychologists led by Dr. Eidelman asked people about their political viewpoints in a bar and in a laboratory setting.

Bar patrons were asked about social issues before blowing into a Breathalyzer. As it turned out, the political viewpoints of patrons with high blood alcohol levels were more likely to be conservative than were those of patrons whose blood alcohol levels were low.

But it wasn't just the alcohol talking, according to the statement. When the researchers conducted similar interviews in the lab, they found that people who were asked to evaluate political ideas quickly or while distracted were more likely to express conservative viewpoints.

"Keeping people from thinking too much...or just asking them to deliberate or consider information in a cursory manner can impact people's political attitudes, and in a way that consistently promotes political conservatism," Dr. Eidelman said in the email.

The study was published online in the journal "Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin."

What do you think? Are conservatives less intelligent than liberals--or more intelligent? And is conservatism a matter of lazy thinking?

Example of low effort thinking: you'll find conservatives right here in this thread repeating that liberals just "take handouts" while conservatives work hard for their money. The actual data, however, show that liberals earn an average of 6 percent more than conservatives and that red states take disproportionately more federal money than blue states. Now, is this because of liberal and conservative  Read More...

In a neglected passage (of course), Hayek writes, “Conservatism, though a necessary element in any stable society, is not a social program; in its paternalistic, nationalistic, and power-adoring tendencies it is often closer to socialism than true liberalism; and with its traditionalistic, anti-intellectual and often mystical propensities it will never, except in short periods of disillusionment, appeal to the young and all those others who believe that some changes are desirable if this world is to become a better place.

A conservative movement, by its very nature, is bound to be a defender of established privileged and to lean on the power of government for the protection of privilege.”

Now they have to check in Emergency for Heart trouble.

See, "low-effort" thinking! Instead of "too" you used "to." Go finish the third-grade and come back when you learn grammar.

I guess you guys are forgetting the FIRST thing taught in any Science course...Science CANNOT prove anything. This website/source is one of the MOST liberal biased websites I've seen. I consider myself fairly conservative, and I know for a fact I do more political research than anybody else I know. From MANY different websites. This kind of close minded, ignorant thinking process being used to say Conservatives are "lazy thinkers" is ridiculous. You can look at any statistic, the less educated, ex. high school dropout, high school only, some college, ALL lean heavily toward liberal/democrat side.

Boy, that is the most mealy-mouthed answer I've ever heard. God forbid we should call it like it is and risk offending some people.

I have come to believe that they are linear thinkers. They can not get out side an issue to see it from different perspectives, thus they can never see the bigger pictures. Plus they are either to lazy to do research or they just can't bear to witness they're ideals are just plain wrong.

And that explains why when one of the conservative politicians (especially the tea party variety) keeps repeating the same sentence, doesn't expand it, or give an actual idea to go along with their theory-that would require their constituents to start thinking at a higher level, and then they would question the theories and be turned off completely.

This is the kind of study that directly impacts why conservatives distrust science. This isn't how one changes minds. It's how 'science' closes minds. This type of study does nothing but stir the pot no matter the outcome. I'd rather fund study's such as $300,000 for a GPS-equipped helicopter to hunt for radioactive rabbit droppings at the Hanford nuclear reservation in Washington state. And that's a shame. Because science can change one's life in so many positive ways while helping your neighbors.

Why, just because you don't like the outcome? "I'd rather fund something else cuz I don't like what you found." You just illustrated the point lol
01:04 AM on 11/04/2012
This is exactly why conservatives disLIKE, not distrust, science. Because it doesn't say exactly what they want it to say. They can't control it and manipulate it...kinda like PBS. And you seem to agree that's a bad thing.

Tell me, did you dislike it when conservatives said there are welfare cheats? Because that "stirs the pot" no matter the outcome too.

I guess we disagree. Denying that being gay is 'built in', denying that global warming is happening now, denying that a womans body belongs to her and not them, that's a bit more then 'dislike'. Cons are lying or/and they don't trust the science.

There are welfare cheats. There's also voting fraud. Much more on the Con side then the Dem side. I'm a realist. Surprised?

In survival-threatening situations, people choose self-preservation. This is conservatism. Amplify fear and supply weaponry; this is ultra-conservatism.

Conservatism, let's face it, is more about one liners and over simplification than anything else. The mythos of a conservative is predicated on a belief that there was a simpler time, a better time, in which all of the ills of modern society didn't exist. They believe liberals came in and complicated things. Of course they did, because they were trying to do something about the problems that were there all along, but were just largely ignored.
Things are way better now than they have ever been.
