Mets, Yankees Off To Surprising Starts: The Amazin' Are 3-0, The Bombers 0-3

Posted: Updated:

A surprising start to the MLB season in New York this year. The Amazin' Mets are off to a 3-0 start while the Bronx Bombers have er, bombed, their first three games, stumbling out of the gate with a 0-3 record.

Despite an off-season of bad press--Ponzi schemes, the Reyes trade, and money problems--the Mets completed a series sweep of the Atlanta Braves Sunday. Pitcher Jon Niese-- who just signed a 5-year, $25 million dollar contract with the club--pitched a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Things got close when Manny Acosta coughed up a homer Brian McCann in the eighth, but Frank Francisco pitched a perfect ninth to secure the save.

"This [start] means everything,’’ manager Terry Collins told The New York Post. “We’ve done a lot of talking about getting ready to compete. I told those guys ... you’re professional players and there are expectations in this town and in this clubhouse, so get yourself ready to play. And they’ve done that; they’ve stepped up.’’

The Yankees meanwhile were shutout by the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday. According to ESPN, Rays pitcher "Jeremy Hellickson came within one out of a three-hitter on his birthday and the Rays beat the Yankees 3-0 Sunday to drop the defending AL East champions to 0-3 for the first time in 14 years."

The Yankees, however, aren't panicking. The last time the club had an 0-3 start, they rebounded with a 114-win season and a World Series championship.

"At times, it seems magnified when it's the beginning of the year," manager Joe Girardi said. "We've all been through three-game losing streaks. This is a resilient club. We'll be fine."

So, a fluke start for both the Yanks and Mets? Or a sign of the season to come?

New York will have a better idea when the teams square off in this year's subway series which will take place June 8–10 (at Yankee Stadium), and June 22–24 (at Citi Field). Until then, fans can take part in HuffPost's very own debate here.
