This morning, Cathy Horyn of The New York Times reported that Raf Simona, former director at Jil Sander, would be filling John Galliano's shoes as creative director of Christian Dior.
We have long suspected that this would be the case. When it was announced in February that Jil Sander herself would return to her namesake label, the rumor mill suggested this was because Simons was heading to Dior. At Jil Sander, Simons designed minimalist, feminine clothes, worn by the likes of Diane Kruger, Tilda Swinton and Kate Bosworth. Though these three women are known for high fashion, the simplicity of his designs for Jil Sander allowed them to each make the looks their own. My personal favorite, the light yellow skirt that Tilda Swinton wore to the 2011 Golden Globe Awards (pictured below), demonstrates that Simons' aesthetic is quite different from Galliano's very elaborate designs. This is exciting for the LVMH-owned brand, but also frightening. Will Simons hold onto the fans that Galliano brought to the fashion house? Will he succeed? Will Simons' fans will follow him to Dior? Let us know in the comments.
