Trayvon Martin Case: George Zimmerman Launches Fundraising Website For Legal Defense

George Zimmerman

Updated on April 10, 2012 8:53 a.m.: A number of websites have come forward claiming to collect financial support for George Zimmerman’s legal fees. But attorneys for the man who fatally shot Trayvon Martin told NBC News on Monday that Zimmerman will be accepting donations from supporters via a PayPal account on therealgeorgezimmerman.com

“I have created a Paypal account solely linked on this website as I would like to provide an avenue to thank my supporters personally and ensure that any funds provided are used only for living expenses and legal defense, in lieu of my forced inability to maintain employment," Zimmerman writes on his website. "I will also personally, maintain accountability of all funds received. I reassure you, every donation is appreciated.”

Though he hasn't been formally charged, the neighborhood watchman who shot and killed Trayvon Martin is setting up a fundraising campaign to cover his legal fees, NBC News reports.

George Zimmerman said he was acting in self defense when he fatally shot an unarmed 17-year-old who was walking home from a convenience store in Sanford, Fla., in February. Zimmerman is protected under the Stand Your Ground Law, but federal officials are currently investigating the case, which has sparked national outrage.

Zimmerman left his job at a mortgage risk management firm after the shooting, according to the Grio and is hoping to drum up financial support to pay for his lawyers and living expenses through his soon-to-launch fundraising site, www.zimmermandefense.com.

"George Zimmerman's family has set up a website for anyone who would like help George and his family with their living expenses and for his defense," attorneys Hal Uhrig and Craig Sonner said in a statement obtained by NBC News.

Zimmerman has already found some support from gun advocacy groups, HLN reports. The National Association for Legal Gun Defense says it will donate $10,000 to help pay for his legal expenses and Legal Boom, a Florida-based gun rights group, pledged to back Zimmerman, whose reputation, they say, has been unfairly "ruined."

"We wanted to help someone who we feel has been wronged and found guilty in the court of public opinion,” Chris Kossmann of Legal Boom, told HLN. “People have been crying for justice but we don’t think people know what real justice is. As of yet nobody’s stood up for him [Zimmerman].”

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story stated that George Zimmerman was seeking donations via www.zimmermandefense.com. It also stated that Trayvon Martin was shopping at a candy store. He purchased candy from a convenience store.

The Zimmermans are using all their resources to detrail the trial. I hope Angela Corey doesn't let them make a FOOL of her.
10:45 AM on 04/27/2012
The Zimmermans made a fool of the Judge with their website of $200K. They knew how much money they had raised when the Judge asked them. They should have been in at the court hearing and not done by phone. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out where the big money is coming from.

I have just learned the true story about why HuffPo posted first one website -- www.zimmermandefense.com -- and then it turned out George had another website -- therealgeorgezimmerman.com. I thought Huffpo had just messed up (and let's face it, they do) but it turns out the first one was set up by Zimmerman's lawyers and paid into a paypal account controlled by Zimmerman's father. Turns out ol' George didn't like that because he slapped together that second crappy looking website (therealgeorgezimmerman.com) and directed all donated money to his OWN paypal account, and then dropped out of site, not responding to his attorneys, who ultimately dropped him, and presumably hiding from his dad as well. The attorneys tell the whole story in this video: http://youtu.be/BK86RGlM5VE

I can't believe the press has not picked up on this story. Clearly ole George is trying to make some dough off this and doesn't want his father in charge of it. And that site he put together!?! It looks like a 10-year-old did it. I wonder if he wanted the money because he was planning to go on the lam? Something's fishy about that whole thing.

This tells us something about George Zimmerman's character and how decidedly unpredictable, erratic and unstable he really is. This guy is a piece of work.
04:48 PM on 04/13/2012
Yea, he is a bad guys because every black person in the country is calling for his head right? Of course he is in hiding, you would be too. Also, it is clear you are not keeping up with the news: George has a new legal team. Why don't you inform yourself before posting this non-sense. You are just as bad as Jesse Jackson and the rest of the negor wonder friends.

The issues is Zimmerman misled the court. The judge is reconsidering the bail amount. He may even revoke bail

O'mara said he didn't know about the website, but millions of Americans did.

You are so right about the Zimmermans especially George.
07:02 PM on 04/12/2012
Zimmerman was no drug dealer, he was no pimp, nor did he intentional kill Martin for the joy of just killing. This was a self-defense shooting and after the incident like many other incidents in our own personal lives we regret or wise we could go back and had done it a different way. Everyone is quick to put him down, but he did what he did because he thought it was his only choice at the moment. He is losing because of the media and politicians. I support him 100%. The black community aways cries the race card. They will continue to use it as a last resort because it is all they know. The majority of blacks are in the bottom of society, ex. education, wealth compared to whites, asians, etc. I don't see whites protesting the white couple killed where the husband had his head hacked off in front of his wife and then the 4 black men did evil to her and finally killed her. Where was the black community to protest for their justice? Blacks were not the only ones treated like 2nd class. Asians, Whites from Europe, Russians, etc will treated like crap for a long long time.

Zimmerman was erratic, unstable and unpredictable. His behavior in the last week has borne that out.
04:50 PM on 04/13/2012
He is hiding because he is afraid (rightly so) that if the blacks get their hands on him they would shoot him just for the noteriety. Talk about unpredictable, how about black people who are constantly shooting each other and by standers for no reason?

your statement is so filled with hyprocrisy and bigotry you can't be taken seriously...you are quick to support him as if you were at the scene of the crime...none of the groups you've mentioned as being treated like 2nd class citizens were legally unfree in a free country...I would suggest you study American history a little more and you'll understand the race card comes from a full deck of oppression and maltreatment from the past 400 hundred years and continues today...not every criminal incident leads to protest and outrage (although some should) because of the violence that permeates throughout this society, just the egregious ones like the Zimmerman-Martin case...more importantly if the Sanford FL police department didn't have such a racist history and had done their jobs initially, we wouldn't have had to protest for justice

and what is the Martin family doing? George now finds himself in the unenviable position of having to go to court because he defended himself and he is up against all the resources of organized blackness. If you had Sharpton and Eric "my people" Holder trying to put you in jail, I am pretty sure you would start a website asking for donations too.

You are so one sided it is amazing.

If we live in a society where people charged with murder start asking the general public to make financial contributions to "support" them and pay for their legal fees, we're in pretty big trouble.

I read your response 3 or 4 times and the amount of racism in that small paragraph was disgusting.

be honest people if Zimmerman had been black and martin was white NOBODY would have said a word the only reason Fla. arrested Zimmerman is because they were scared of a riot happening like it did in L.A. think about it they already shot up a cop car black people are committing harm to whites everyday and there is no justice for them WHY cause they are white.as for the hoodie everytime a store gets robbed what are they wearing? A HOODIE!!!! WHAT about the fact that Martin was involved with the BLACK FOOT SOLDIERS OF FLA. there motto kill all whities? If Zimmerman had been black, he would've been arrested immediatley and would be awaiting trial, which is all we asked for in this case.
Try to keep up.

Very True!!
07:27 PM on 04/13/2012
But had Zimmerman been black and shot Trayvon(who is black) would Zimmerman still be guilty-or would you want the facts before making that decision
01:08 PM on 04/12/2012
It not just about race. It's about the rights of people to go about their own business without being shot dead. It's about justice for the family of the Trayvon Martin. It's disgusting that the media are dragging Trayvon's name through the dirt. The boy was unarmed and minding his own business. He was shot dead simply for being seen in the wrong place at the wrong time by the wrong person. A law that allows an armed person to stalk, confront and then shoot dead an unarmed person is woefully flawed, as this case clearly demonstrates.
01:57 PM on 04/12/2012
It shouldn't be about race period! It is 2012 and yet when events like this happen it becomes White vs Black even though Zimmerman isn't white! I am a white male and think that Zimmerman should be charged to the fullest. If you carry a gun you feel empowered and approch situations you wouldn't without one. Zimmerman has given a bad spotlight on people who carry guns and know the risks and consequences of ever having to use it. Also I don't know what media outlet you are watching that is dragging Martin's name through the dirt but it isn't true. "Trayvon was suspended for weed residue" IRRELAVANT to what happened that night. I wish humans as a species weren't so stupid

Have the Koch brothers extended money yet? This sounds like something they'd involve themselves with. After all, they've been sh!tting on civil rights for decades.
05:07 PM on 04/13/2012
you do realize that the koch brothers, in total, donate less than half as much money as some of Obama's larger donors. People always want to point to the Kochs but the reality is that there is much more money in liberal causes. Rich white people really just don't care that much where as minorities and liberals make their living by soliciting money for leftist causes.

I hope the FBI have gorge under 24 hr Camera surveillance with high definition recorders located in more then one location , Otherwise I have a feeling someone will use plan B . The plan used before by JDL Terrorist who most likely are living in Israel under new identities . they will claim he committed suicide, or suffered a hart attack due to all the stress he was under, they will use a john doe or homeless dead unclaimed body to switch and certify as Zimmerman dead body , in order to kill interest in and the demand for justice by the angry public. they will claim they had bury him by sun down due to religious laws , as they hurry to have a operatives or sympathetic friendly Doctors sign the fake death certificates while they send Zimmerman back to Israel with a new identity as they did with the JDL terrorists Irving D. Rubin, the story was , He committed suicide in jail when awaiting trial on charges of conspiracy to bomb private and government property. and Earl Krugel, Rubin's first lieutenant died in jail.On November 4, 2005, he was killed by an inmate after having been transferred to a Phoenix federal prison. what are the chances of this happening to an inmate in custody in a federal prison ? Things that make you go Hummm?

Your comment doesn't make any sense in relationship to the comment above. IMO didn't say anything about guilt. IMO said that if he doesn't pay for his defense (with this money or his dad's or whatever) the state will have to pay to defend him. That's just the way it is. Guilty or Innocent, an American citizen is entitled to a defense.
