Faith Inspires: The Ignatian Spirituality Project

Editor's note: Every week, HuffPost Religion shines a spotlight on religious people doing good work in their communities. This week's Faith Inspires highlights the work of the Ignatian Spirituality Project, which uses the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius of Loyola to improve the lives of the homeless who are in recovery -- people who have been through hell and live profoundly broken lives, says Tom Drexler, the project's executive director.

On two-day, directed retreats, homeless men and women in cities throughout the United States are compelled to look at their brokenness and begin to let go, to take a bolder approach to life, Drexler says. The ISP's impact is remarkable.

So, what inspires the Ignatian Spirituality Project? A verse from the Gospels just about sums it up:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:18-19)

HuffPost Religion applauds the good works of the Ignatian Spirituality Project, which works directly in the cities of Akron, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dayton, Denver, Houston, Milwaukee, Morristown, New Orleans, Omaha, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, St. Louis, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Washington, D.C. Find them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

Correction: An earlier version of this post said that ISP leads 30-day, silent retreats. While the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius follow this format, ISP leads two-day, directed retreats for its participants.
