Space Art By Kids Wows In Space Foundation Student Contest (GALLERY)

LOOK: Best Space Art By Children

What does outer space look like through the eyes of a kid? Pretty impressive. The Space Foundation's 2012 Student Art Contest made that telescopically clear in the selection of winners above.

The winning artworks, announced April 2, come from K-12 students in four age groups and range from abstract, Starry Night-inspired celestial scenes to gritty, realist astronaut portraits. The Space Foundation is based in Colorado Springs, Colo., but the winning kids came from as far away as Hawaii and Pakistan.

Colorado student Raquel Arens, in the 6th-to-8th grade age group, won the Space Foundation Achievement Award, the contest's top prize, for her impressionistic painting of several galaxies

According to a Space Foundation statement, winning entries will be displayed at the foundation's 28th National Space Symposium, which begins April 16.

The Space Foundation is a nonprofit organization devoted to space advocacy. Prizes for the 2012 Student Art Contest were provided by ARES Corporation and Fisher Space Pen Co.
