Trayvon Martin Case: George Zimmerman's Attorneys Quit, Say Client 'Disappeared'

Posted: 04/10/2012 4:44 pm Updated: 04/11/2012 12:25 pm

George Zimmerman's attorneys said in a press conference Tuesday afternoon that they will no longer be representing him. The attorneys claim that Zimmerman repeatedly rebuffed their legal advice, and that they have now lost contact with him.

"As of now we are withdrawing as counsel for Mr. Zimmerman," Craig Sonner, one of his attorneys, told reporters outside the Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford, Fla. "We've lost contact with him. Up to this point, we've had contact with him every day. He's gone on his own. I'm not sure what he's doing or who he's talking to, but at this point we're withdrawing as counsel. If he wants us to come back as counsel, he will contact us."

Sonner said that he has never met Zimmerman in person, and that their conversations have all taken place via telephone.

Zimmerman said he killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, on Feb. 26 in the gated community where the girlfriend of the teenager's father lived in Sanford. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch member, called 911 and told a police dispatcher that Martin, who was returning from a trip to a nearby convenience store, "looked suspicious." After an altercation, Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest. He told the local police that he shot Martin in self defense, and was not arrested or charged.

Protesters around the country have held rallies calling for Zimmerman's arrest, and the Sanford police department has been the focus of withering criticism for its handling of the initial investigation. The case has become a flashpoint in the national debates over racial profiling and gun control laws. Martin was black. Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Peruvian.

Sonner said that he still believed that Zimmerman was acting in self-defense, which Zimmerman and his surrogates have maintained since the shooting. "Nothing that I've said about him or this case has changed in any way," Sonner said.

Attorney Hal Uhrig said that Zimmerman had stopped responding to their phone calls, and that they had a "pretty good idea" of where he was, while Sonner maintained that Zimmerman was "still in the United States." Last week, Zimmerman's lawyers said their client was ready to surrender if charged with a crime.

"George Zimmerman in our opinion ... is not doing well emotionally, probably suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome, we understand from others that he may have lost a lot of weight," Uhrig said. "Our concern is that for him to do this ... to handle it this way suggests that he may not be in complete control of what's going on. We're concerned for his emotional and physical safety."

Zimmerman has been in hiding for weeks over concerns that he is in physical danger. A fringe group put out a $10,000 bounty on his head, which drew a swift rebuke from activists who were aiming to draw attention the Martin case.

Sonner said that he did not believe that Zimmerman would harm himself or flee the country.

Uhrig said that last Thursday, he and Sonner helped George Zimmerman's father, Robert Zimmerman, set up a website to solicit donations for George's legal defense and living expenses. They said that they had not been able to reach Zimmerman on Sunday, the day before the site was to go live. The site's address, zimmermandefense.com, had been made available to news outlets.

"On Sunday we lost track of George in that he wouldn't return our phone calls, and we couldn't get hold of him," Uhrig said. "We had no reason at that time to believe that it was anything suspect."

But Zimmerman set up another website that was different from the one set up by his attorneys and his father.

"On Monday we began fielding questions ... 'Did we know anything about [therealgeorgezimmerman.com] website?' And our initial response was, 'Well, that's probably bogus, we don't know anything about that.' And we started making inquiries and, frankly, confirmed that he, through friends or family, had in fact set that site up and it was legitimate. We immediately began telling the media, disregard the earlier website we gave you that we had set up. Go for the one we now know that he set up."

"We were happy enough with that, but disturbed that he had not communicated with us," Uhrig said.

The attorneys said that Zimmerman repeatedly ignored their legal advice.

"We learned that he had called Sean Hannity of Fox News directly -- not through us," Uhrig said. "We believe that he spoke directly with Sean off the record and [Hannity's] not even willing to tell us what our client told him."

Uhrig said the "final straw" was Zimmerman's attempt to set up a meeting with the special prosecutor on the case, Angela Corey. But Uhrig said that Zimmerman had contacted the special prosecutor directly to come in to speak with them, as well. "We were a bit astonished and had some conversation back and forth with the prosecutor's office," Uhrig said. "They told us what we expected, '[that they] were not going to talk to a criminal or [defendant] without counsel.'"

Uhrig said that Zimmerman told officials at the prosecutor's office that Uhrig and Sonner were not his lawyers, but "his legal advisers."

As the press conference went on, Uhrig engaged in several testy exchanges with reporters, alternately criticizing the news media's coverage of the case and defending the state's Stand Your Ground law. "The gun law is a good law because it gives honest citizens the right to carry a weapon," Uhrig said.

Uhrig was also derisive of civil rights activists, whom he said were attempting to profit from the case, and mocked Rep. Corrine Brown, who represents Sanford in Congress and has been calling for Zimmerman's prosecution.

On Monday, the special prosecutor said that she would not convene a grand jury in the case, which effectively rules out murder charges in the case, as only grand juries can issue murder charges in the state of Florida. Zimmerman can still be charged with manslaughter and other crimes for his role in the shooting.

UPDATE:

Trayvon Martin's parents and their attorney appeared on CNN tonight to discuss the latest developments in the case, including the special prosecutor's announcement that new details about the case will be made public in the next 72 hours.

"We're encouraged, but we have a lot of anxiety," Benjamin Crump, the attorney, told Piers Morgan. "No one has any idea where the killer of Trayvon Martin is."

Tracy Martin,Trayvon's father, said he believed that Zimmerman was a flight risk. "He definitely needs to be contained," he said.

Alan Dershowitz, the legal scholar and criminal attorney, also appeared on the show, and said he was "disturbed" by the conduct of Zimmerman's former attorneys. Dershowitz said they may have damaged his defense by expounding on his state of mind, and they may possibly have violated attorney-client privilege. "All they had to do was quietly say that 'we're no longer representing [Zimmerman] and our role in the case is over.'"

Clarification: In an earlier version of this story, attorney Hal Uhrig was not fully identified.

Trayvon's pictures on TV were of a very small young aged boy, which he was not the night this happened. He was over six feet talk and active in sports, so very muscular and strong. Zimmerman was portrayed as the villain from the start. In fact he is much smaller than Trayvon though older. George Zimmerman deeply regrets that Trayvon was killed - it is obvious from his countenance. He would never have been in contact with the police from the start of this incident, if he was planning to kill and shoot Trayvon. George is suffering from the after affects of this incident because he is a decent person and regrets taking another human being's life. When are we going to get to hear his side of the story? Decisions made in moments of despair have to be made in split seconds, so George in fear of his life shot Trayvon fatally. I wish he would have shot his leg or arm instead, but he had very little time to respond to his attacker. Trayvon perhaps became angry that someone seemed to be following him and his revengeful feelings overtook him as he become emboldened talking with his girlfriend. I hope Trayvon's parents spare themselves the lifetime regret of getting an innocent person locked up in jail for life. The loss of their son is very much regrettable, but to do injustice to another living person will be an on going grief which I'm sure they will one day

Zimmerman should sue the media sources who depicted him in such a negative light by not reporting facts, by altering and editing the 911 dispatch calls, for purposely trying to portray him as another ethnicity for their own cause, for creating such a social divide due to their irresponsibility in reporting on this case and for ignoring their ethics of journalism! Zimmerman should not have been charged, they have removed the police chief and the state's attorney to pave the way to charging Zimmerman. So Zimmerman, like everyone deserves a fair trial where the facts can be presented in a court of law instead of the "court of over zealous media ratings"!

Be smart and look at things objectively, don't let outside sources dictate what you should think and thus indirectly what you should feel.

4) The gated community had 18 break ins/robberies that the police caught and numerous ones that had got away over the past 12 months. All the robberies were committed by teenage Black males. The community asked for Zimmerman's help in the Neighborhood Watch Program to assist in the epidemic of robberies that plagued the community. A week before the shooting Zimmerman observed a robbery in progress and called 911 who responded and apprehended the suspect, Zimmerman only assisted in identifying the suspect only once the police arrived. Martin had his gun on him that time also and yet did not try to thwart the robber in progress what so ever.

5) Zimmerman (H 5'9" - 5'10" 180lb) was out of shape and much smaller than Martin (H6'2" - 6'3" 190lb) who was in football shape. Aside from the single gun shot wound, Martin had no other injuries. Martin had numerous injuries that were attended to by paramedics at the scene.

CONT.
3) Martin approached Zimmerman, at which point Zimmerman told 911 dispatch that the person he was calling for is now approaching him (Zimmerman was on the phone with 911 dispatch the whole time) When Martin approached and got close to Zimmerman he asked "why are you following me" and Zimmerman asked "what are you doing", Martin replied "you got a problem?" and Zimmerman again said "what are you doing here", Martin's reply was a punch to Zimmerman's nose that broke his nose and knocked him down, after which Martin got on top of Zimmerman and started banging his head on the side walk between the grass areas. Zimmerman was screaming for someone to help him (which you can clearly hear in the other 911 calls by the residents) as Martin was banging his head into the concrete, at which point Zimmerman shifted his body to get to the grass so that his head didn't continue to get banged into the concrete but rather the grass. Martin beat Zimmerman's ass and tried to cover Zimmerman's mouth and yells for help (probably because he was visiting the area/ community and didn't know who might come out to help Zimmerman), while straddling Zimmerman, Martin felt Zimmerman's gun and tried to take it at which point a struggle for the gun ensued and Martin got shot!

dude stop making things up. he was not on the phone with 911 the whole time. Martin was walking home minding his own business. Everything you said is out of the mouth of one of Zimmerman's family members. several people heard Martin screaming and one said Zimmerman was on top of martin when he shot him. Bottom line, had he not profiled Trayvon none of this happens. And stop false reporting to make your case seem credible. The experts already said it wasn't Zimmerman screaming, so there goes your theory

There is incredible bias portrayed by the media in the case - in which they have altered/edited/manipulate and piece mealed this whole case to the public! (and at some point you have to start asking if it's just for viewer ratings)
Couple points of interesting information on this case because ppl will believe anything they hear and follow their emotions with out any applied logic!

1) Zimmerman did not chase Martin but simply observed him walking around in the rain and was waiting for the police to show up to have Martin checked out. While walking back to his SUV after 911 dispatch asked him not to continue following Martin, Zimmerman replied "okay" and that he had lost sight of Maritn and turned away with out having any contact or communication with Martin what so ever.

2) Zimmerman's vehicle was in the pics of the crime scene not even 10 yards away from where Zimmerman got beat/Martin shot.

Trayvon Martin was lurking around in a Gated nieghborhood that was a frequent victim of robberies committed by blacks, and attempted to put a beat down on a certified watchman, with a carry permit looking out for the residents. At 6 foot 2 160 lbs and a football player no doubt he decided to put the beat down on a smaller guy who was keeping an eye on him and had called the cops. Witness statements have been the polar opposite of everything the media has been telling you. The Media and the Mob have made this into something it isn't, and the taxpayers now have to pay for this trial that has about zero chance for conviction and wont happen for another 3 years and by then it will mostly be forgotton about.
09:02 AM on 04/14/2012
What you fail to grasp is that when he jumped out of his vehicle he dropped the phone call so anything he did was not recorded. So, if you are followed you have no problem with someone following you around at all. People get killed all the time not allowing themselves be aware of there surroundings. Question, if your daughter is being followed by some guy and she does not know them, is it encummbrant upon her to let him follow her. If he choose to comfort her to kidnap her it is ok for him to take her or kill her because she may have slapped him because she feared for her life when he moved towards her?
05:53 PM on 04/17/2012
No witness statements have not. A witness said Zimmerman was on top of Martin when he shot him. Several said the whole thing happened in the grass (so much for banging head on concrete). The experts said it wasn't Zimmerman screaming for help. Usually when a gun in involved its not the holder screaming help. He profiled Trayvon and followed him, which started the whole incident. I don't think for a second that he attacked Zimmerman. Why would he double back so close to home. If Zimmerman had not been paranoid from start this does not happen. Trayvon had a right to be where he was

Hey Legal Eagle....

You are "attorney of record" for a client ONLY when you make an appearance in court on behalf of the client. Prior to that you are just a media opportunist and PR flack trying to generate publicity for yourself.

Maybe he didn't "disappear." Maybe George was just hiding from YOU!

If only he had exhibited the same common sense on the night he killed the kid none of this would have happened.
