Connie Mack Ad Attacks Bill Nelson For Supporting Monkey Study In Stimulus Bill

In a new ad launched Wednesday, Florida Rep. Connie Mack (R) found a novel part of the 2009 stimulus package with which to attack incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson: monkeys on drugs.

Urging Nelson (D-Fla.) to "stop monkeying around with our tax dollars," the 30-second spot highlighted a study on the effects of cocaine on monkeys that was included in the stimulus. According to the ad, the study cost just $144,541, but was emblematic of "millions in wasteful spending" that Nelson supporting in voting for the bill. Along with pictures of a monkey and a soundtrack of hooting noises, the video features a clip of Nelson praising the bill, saying, "overall, it's a pretty good stimulus."

Mack, who is challenging Nelson for his Senate seat, has trailed in most polls. The most recent survey, taken in late March by Quinnipiac University, found that Nelson leading by eight points.
