Granddaughter In Trunk
(File photo.) A German grandfather, not pictured, forgot that he'd allowed his granddaughter to travel in his car's trunk.

One German man might officially be out of the running for Grandpa of the Year.

In northwestern Germany, a 72-year-old man was allegedly so distracted by the beauty of a local lake that he forgot his granddaughter was in the trunk of his car yesterday.

The 9-year-old girl asked to ride in the trunk, a request the grandfather accepted for the trip to Sorpe Lake in the Sauerland area of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's The Local reported. But when they arrived, he was so enchanted by the scenery that he got out and went for a walk, he told local police.

Other tourists heard the girl's calls for help as she pounded on the inside of the trunk and they summoned firefighters who were able to free her from the car, according to UPI.

The local police spokesman told the wire service that the grandpa was "visibly affected" by the incident upon his return and given a warning by German police. He also promised to never let anyone ride in his trunk again, UPI reported.

Another no harm done story to play upon your outrage of what could have been.
At least the Germans have enough sense to just issue a warning. In the US he'd be in custody.

If you don't think that girl was traumatised by this incident (along with the grandfather), please don't breed!

Who in the world would let a child ride in the trunk? -- something about this whole story reeks.

At 72, my father was still "all there" he lived to be 92, and maybe the parents of the little girl did not know he was going to let her do that, of course; thing is, who knows if they are going to trust him again with their daughter

I find this hard to believe. Maybe he put her in there to hurt or kill her and then she cried for help and he came up with this story. She could be too scared of him to tell the truth of what happened yet.

My buddy and I back in the '50's used to put our girlfriends in the trunk when we drove into the drive in movie. I had a '38 dodge, and you could pull the rear seat forward and get them out without having to get outside of the car. After the movie we would cruise to the bean hut, in Anaheim, Ca and buy them a chocolate coke (10 cents and a hot buttered bun 5 cents). Gasoline was 19 cent gallon.

My grama was babysitting, and they drove off without the baby once. It happens.

I would suspect the grampa has some cognitive issues, first to put her in the trunk, second to forget her.
