Mitt Romney Won't Repeal The Lilly Ledbetter Act, Campaign Confirms

Mitt Romney Ledbetter

WASHINGTON -- As president, Mitt Romney would not repeal the Lilly Ledbetter Act, which provides women with more legal channels through which to pursue equal pay for equal work, his campaign confirmed on Wednesday.

"Women account for more than 92 percent of jobs lost under Barack Obama," said Amanda Henneberg, a spokeswoman for the former Massachusetts governor's campaign. "Of course Mitt Romney supports pay equity for women. The real question is whether President Obama supports jobs for women."

Andrea Saul, another Romney spokeswoman, added that he "supports pay equity and is not looking to change current law."

The remarks put to rest, for the time being, a brief controversy in the now-escalating fight between Romney's campaign and President Barack Obama's over whose policies have been worse for women. During a conference call held earlier in the morning, a Romney aide was unable to answer a straightforward question about the former governor's position on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, which Obama signed into law amid heavy Republican opposition.

"We'll get back to you on that," the aide replied, when asked about the law by The Huffington Post.

Roughly two hours later, Romney's campaign clarified his stance -- but not before the Obama campaign got in a few licks, sending out a statement of disapproval from Ledbetter herself.

I was shocked and disappointed to hear that Mitt Romney is not willing to stand up for women and their families. If he is truly concerned about women in this economy, he wouldn’t have to take time to ‘think’ about whether he supports the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This Act not only ensures women have the tools to get equal pay for equal work, but it means their families will be better served also. Women earn just 77 cents to every dollar that men earn for the same job, which is why President Obama took decisive action and made this the first bill that he signed when he took office. Women should have the ability to take their bosses to court to get the same pay as their male coworkers. Anyone who wants to be President of the United States shouldn’t have to think about whether they support pursuing every possible avenue to ensuring women get the same pay for the same work as men. Our economic security depends on it.

The Romney aide's failure to immediately answer the Ledbetter question was a bit of a head scratcher -- and not just because the law has been around for more than three years. Romney's campaign has spent the past few days arguing that it is the Obama administration, not the Republican Party, that has been bad for women. The argument rested on a much-disputed reading of Bureau of Labor Statistics data, but the campaign has been on the offensive nonetheless. Bungling the natural follow-up question takes some of the air out of that effort.

Oh how lucky we are that he doesn't intend to cripple this law, however how about all the other good things he plans to eliminate! If he kills half of what he says he is going to we will be back in the dark ages and he and his rich cronies will all be having a party at our expense.

Hollow words, show me in your actions, Mitt, and don't flip flop on your position.

What's interesting about this is President Obama's own history with women in the work place. When one of President Obama's debate coaches, Anita Dunn, worked at the White House, this is what she reportedly had to say about her experience there:

“This place would be in court for a hostile workplace. ... Because it actually fit all of the classic legal requirements for a genuinely hostile workplace to women.”

In the same piece, former economic adviser Christina Romer is reported as saying, "I felt like a piece of meat."

“‘I felt like a piece of meat,’ Christina Romer, former head of the Council of Economic Advisers, said of one meeting in which Suskind writes she was ‘boxed out’ by Summers,” reported the Post.

The question should be: would he veto a repeal of the law if the Republicans, who voted against it, took control of the House and Senate and passed it?

How odd that Romney had to "think" about whether he would repeal the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Is he not aware that the President of the United States does not have the Constitutional authority to repeal laws? Is he really that ignorant?

As I understand this incident involved an aid, not the candidate. But then we are not all blessed with friendship for a JD from Harvard . In addition most of us have to work for a living & not spending our life playing word games while working for the Washington Post as a political advocatge

signed into law amid heavy republican opposition... so why would any woman vote for a candidate not working in the best interest for all citizens? the mittnick may not be opposed to it now, but what's to say the GOP/RNC apparatus is directing him to say that now only to make sure he appears to be the people's choice award winning egalitarian? and then...

Can someone tell me what the Republicans have against the Ledletter bill? Really, I don't get it.
What's their stated objection?

What they have against it is the same thing they have against insurance coverage for contraceptives (although they have no trouble with male erectile dysfunction drugs being covered). It contradicts "traditional" roles for women, be they women like Romney's wife, who's unlikely to even have to do her own grocery shopping, or women struggling to support their families.

Too bad the other reply you got was in fortunecookiespeak.

I am so relieved after thinking about it he decided he is 'for' the Lily Ledbetter act. I wonder how the 100% Republicans that voted against stance is now. And just so you know, this 92% of women who lost their jobs is not accurate. Go to Politico or Factcheck.org to find out the actual truth.
12:14 PM on 04/12/2012
Exactly. Those seem to be statistics that they just made up. Why do you think this is called a Mancession? It's been mainly men who have lost their jobs.

I was not correct in say 100% of the Republicans voted against the Lily Ledbetter act. Here are the correct facts:
Five of the worst reactionary fake Democrats-- Allen Boyd (Blue Dog-FL), Bobby Bright (freshman wingnut-AL), Dan Boren (Blue Dog-OK), Parker Griffith (freshman wingnut-AL), Travis Childers (wingnut-MS)-- joined all but 3 Republicans in voting against equal rights for America's working women. The 3 Republicans: Chris Smith (NJ), Ed Whitfield (KY) and Don Young (AK).

Five Democrats joined all but three Republicans in voting against the LL Act.

So much for "no difference between the two parties".

Tomorrow he's turn this all around and make himself look good to women voters. I've been noticing a pattern with politicians of the Republican party - they like to make people's heads spin with the flippity flopping.

Myth Robme must be highly popular in the GOP.

Been running for office since 1992, won 1 governorship in a, Democrat state. Not bad for 20 years hustling his scam, or, is that how long it took him to figure out he has nothing to sell.

This is the point where Mitt Romney grovels back to the middle for votes now that Santorum dropped out! Even Karl Rove knows Mitt Romney has to suck up the middle America for votes in the general election, their just isn't as much old white men votes out there to win Romney the election!

Funny!

He's a Republican, so he's gotta be against it.

Oh. Wait. This is Thursday, so he may be for it.

Tomorrow he'll be against it. Or for it, if he's against it today.

But today may be Opposite Day, so...

Oh, forget it.

This article from Walpo is slightly off topic but it highlights how, "Myth the Snake-Oil Salesman Robme" uses twisted numbers to make bogus claims about our president.

This is what I was talking about. Mitt Romney's falsehoods about this 92% of women out of jobs argument, it much more complicated than that. But, you would have to take the time to find out the truth, and most people don't do that. I am a democrat and I don't just swallow what the President says. I check my facts.
