Trayvon Martin Parents Relieved By Zimmerman Arrest

By SUZANNE GAMBOA and SONYA ROSS 04/11/12 08:01 PM ET AP

WASHINGTON -- Trayvon Martin's parents expressed relief Wednesday over a special prosecutor's decision to charge the man responsible for the 17-year-old's death. Martin's mother said if she could speak directly to George Zimmerman, she would allow him a chance to say he is sorry for what happened.

"I would probably give him an opportunity to apologize," Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, told The Associated Press in an interview. "I would probably ask him if there were another way that he could have settled the confrontation that he had with Trayvon, other than the way it ended, with Trayvon being shot."

Her voice trailed off, and tears welled in her eyes. She remained stoic, and expressed faith that the justice system would work as it should.

Martin's father, Tracy Martin, offered several questions that he would like to ask Zimmerman about the sequence of events that led up to Trayvon's death, but in the end he would want to know, "Was it really worth it?"

"The question I would really like to ask him is, if he could look into Trayvon's eyes and see how innocent he was, would he have then pulled the trigger? Or would he have just let him go on home?" Tracy Martin said.

The parents spoke in Washington shortly before special prosecutor Angela Corey announced in Florida that Zimmerman, 28, had been arrested on a second-degree murder charge in their son's Feb. 26 death. The parents and Trayvon's brother, Jahvaris Fulton, were attending a national conference convened by Al Sharpton's National Action Network.

They watched Corey's announcement on television in a room at the Washington Convention Center. As soon as Corey uttered the words "second-degree murder," Martin and Fulton grasped hands, and their attorney, Benjamin Crump, placed his hands over theirs. Fulton smiled slightly at the news.

"We wanted an arrest and we got it," Fulton said later during a brief appearance before reporters. "Thank you, Lord, thank you, Jesus."

Before the arrest, Fulton said: "That won't bring Trayvon back but at least that would give us reassurance that the justice system is working."

Zimmerman's shooting of the black teenager brought demands from black leaders for his arrest and set off a furious nationwide debate over race and self-defense that reached all the way to the White House. Zimmerman, whose father is white and whose mother is Hispanic, said the teenager attacked him, and he shot in self-defense. Martin's family argued Zimmerman was the aggressor.

They appealed for their supporters, as well as Zimmerman's supporters, to remain calm in response to the prosecutor's decision.

"We've always said that we want peaceful resolution, no matter what side you're on," Martin said.

"We don't want them to stop the protest and the rallies, we just want to make sure that they remain peaceful," Fulton said. "We're going through the process the right way, the proper way. We just ask that everybody that supports us do the same thing. Even the ones who don't support us, we want to make sure that they protest in a peaceful manner."

This family, through their grief have shown nothing but class...I'd wager they would be the sort of family that if they ever got the chance to hear that apology, they would find it in their hearts to forgive...not FORGET...forgive...
When forgiveness is given it allows YOU to move on...RIP Trayvon

Sybrina is NOT ELAYED about anything hang to do with this whole matter... I know her personally and she is a wonderful woman who has expressed deep concern and sympathy for Zimmerman's family...she believes that this was just a whole big mess and that George did not intend to harm her son but it happened and she wanted the arrest so that the family could get to the bottom of just what really happened...she is a CLASS ACT through and through and would not and does not take joy in any of this...it is the media that this hyping all of this...and the race baiters...but is certainly is NOT my dear friend Sybrina

i know this has been said over and over again....but no one is the "winner" in all this! i am sick of the media "trying" this case....let the justice system work...but of course it didn't work when Casey Anthony was on trial, but it's still the best system....i just want the media to "let it go" for a while and let Lady Justice work!!!

i (a sojourner for justice) share your ebullient reaction per the definitive guilty verdict upon the head of George Zimmerman, whose incarceration hopefully gives him plenty of time to experience the pained anguish at the loss of Trayvon Martin!

although his penitential sentence will do nothing to restore the life of a promising young man, he will be forced to confront the absence of one loved by his immediate family, friends and relatives!

this veritable stranger also feels the repercussions of this fiendish fiery fury toward a feisty, friendly, fun-loving youth, whose abrupt cessation via firearms (for absolutely no reason whatsoever) also felt livid with rage when the supposed law enforcement agency blithely turned askance from obvious racial wrath!

yes, this american justice system often presents a charade, facade, mockery, and travesty of representative fairness, yet this turn of events (re::the shackles placed on said criminal) does bring even a mite bit bliss!

thank you mucho judges, jury, and previously jeering masses of moral majority for helping turn the tide so future lives sacrificed at the alter from the barrel of a gun!

the cyber medium forces at large rein in the vicious blood stained hand of george zimmerman, whose fate sealed within the four walls of penitentiary whereby he cannot even escape the hounds of hell that hopefully harass his every cell!

no, i do not consider myself a malicious person only riddled with a intent to read the unanimous charge of guilt, which perchance brewed within the person who nearly go away with murder for snuffing out the life of trayvon martin now forced to spend untold years behind bars!

even if the conviction of consigned to death row reduced to life sentence, the kith and kin of one life cut way to short will never be reclaimed, yet knowing that the wheels of justice turned this racially motivated hate crime (at least presumed by this cogent citizen banker), i utter hooray!

where is the outrage for the other black teens shot and killed by other black teens in FL since the zimmerman incident? why only the outrage over this? why not outrage over others? why are they not important and tray-vawn is?

this injustice does not only need to be voiced by the black community ...but with a national unified voice that racism, and injustice will no longer be tolerated. i believe zimmerman deserves a fair trail, but trayvon and all the other young men who dare to wear hoodies, ride or walk in thier own neighborhoods at night and do not have a police presence for them except to maybe be harassed deserve to have a voice as well .the police had a chance to save this young mans life ... but they blew it . whether they took what zimmerman was saying seriously or not,we might never know rip treyvan my daughter said you were her facebook friend to the martin family... i am so sorry for the loss of your son which did not have to happen, but God gives us all free will and i am sorry that it took your son to open our nations eyes to such flagrant injustice such as this i pray God gives you and all that knew and loved treyvon the peace that surpasses all understanding stay blessed

i doubt that elation is likely to be one of their feelings

What we need to do as RESPONSIBLE gun owners and Concealed Carry License Holders to combat the type of behavior Mr. Zimmerman exhibited that night, as documented in the Sanford PD report. The bottom line is Zimmerman was within his legal means OWNING and CARRYING the weapon, but not how he USED the weapon. This I believe is a training and education issue that each individual concealed gun owner needs to address. We will reverse engineer this scenario and discuss in detail how we do that.
Firstly, let’s define Discretion from Webster’s:

ā€œQuality of being discreet; careful in speech and conduct; prudent, cautious.ā€

I am going to start out with a credo that was taught to me when I first started carrying a gun concealed. These three basics are taught to Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) and security personnel worldwide. They are simple and easy to remember:

Avoidance: Stay Away from Stupid People and Stupid Places and DO NOT Start Fights (ā€œRambo Syndromeā€).
Deterrence: The act of detouring bad behavior
De-Escalation: If a fight starts, try to walk away at all cost from it and eat your pride, because if you have the only gun in the fight, on moral grounds alone, you are required to use more DISCRETION than the other guy because ultimately, you have the option of LETHAL FORCE if certain criteria are met.
