Luz Milagros, Argentina 'Miracle' Morgue Baby, In Critical Condition

By MICHAEL WARREN 04/12/12 06:31 PM ET AP

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — An Argentine newborn who survived nearly 12 hours in a coffin in a morgue after hospital workers gave her up for dead is in critical condition, with a series of complications common among infants born three months premature, a doctor said Thursday.

Tiny Luz Milagros, or "Miracle Light," is suffering from sepsis and convulsions along with signs of neurological damage, said Dr. Diana Vesco, neonatology chief at the Perrando hospital in Resistencia in northern Chaco province. She said the baby is on a ventilator and being treated with antibiotics.

Her mother, Analia Bouter, said she got a supportive call from President Cristina Fernandez on Wednesday asking to see the baby once she's out of intensive care.

That could be a while.

Luz Milagros, whose weight has dropped from 800 grams to 750 grams (1.8 pounds to 1.7 pounds) since she was born 10 days ago, faces a "risk of death commonly associated with her weight and gestational age at birth," said Vesco.

The case became public Tuesday when Chaco's deputy health minister, Rafael Sabatinelli, announced that five medical professionals had been suspended pending an official investigation of what happened.

Bouter told the TeleNoticias TV channel that doctors gave her a death certificate just 20 minutes after the baby was born and the baby was quickly put in a coffin and taken to the morgue's refrigeration room. Twelve hours passed before she and her husband were able to open the coffin to say their last goodbyes.

She said the baby trembled and let out a little cry when she touched its face. She thought it was her imagination – then realized the little girl was alive and dropped to her knees on the morgue floor in shock.

The baby was so cold that "it was like carrying a bottle of ice," Bouter said.

The hospital's medical director, Jose Luis Meirino, said the facility has strict procedures and the girl was born "with no apparent vital signs." The newborn was attended by obstetricians, gynecologists and a neonatologist, he said.

"About what happened afterward, we have no explanation," he said.

Edward Bell, a University of Iowa specialist in premature infants, called it "a remarkable story."

While there are many unanswered questions about the case, Bell offered a few theories about how it might have happened.

Babies born after only 26 weeks "aren't considered to have much of a chance" of surviving in many parts of the world, he said. So, "perhaps justifiably," that might have affected how they treated the baby.

"Pronouncing somebody dead has to be done fairly carefully," Bell said. "It does raise questions about how careful they were in assessing the baby."

Still, he said, declaring death isn't always as straightforward as some people think. Metabolism and heartbeat may slow down gradually and the body stops moving. Most of the time, when movement has stopped and there's no detectable heartbeat, the person is declared dead.

"Ordinarily when you get to that point it's hopeless," even if there is still some electrical activity in the heart, he said.

Bell said there are no standard guidelines on how long to wait until declaring death.

"There are very unusual cases where somebody has been declared clinically dead and then signs of life return," he said.

Under ordinary circumstances, a premature newborn would need immediate care to survive. But Bell said in this case, the morgue's refrigeration may have saved the baby's life because it likely cooled down the infant's metabolism and reduced the need for oxygen.

Bell said parents should not worry that the same mistake might happen with their children.

"It's such an extraordinary thing, that's why it has made the news worldwide."

ALL: this article prompts me to bring this up.....please support the March of Dimes and their valuable research efforts to help babies just like this one. What we can do for them has grown phenominally just in the time I've been delivering babies, imagine what they'll be able to do next. In the Rio Grande Valley, we are doing our Walk in two weeks, on Saturday. I'm not too proud to ask for sponsors, I'm on the March of Dimes website,
http://www.marchforbabies.org/personal_page.asp?pp=4378301&ct=4&w=5565400&u=vlynnieg
(moderators: if I stepped over the line with this, please forgive me and know my heart's in the right place!)
If not me, then someone in your local area when the Walk is in your town. Better yet: participate in the Walk yourself! You'll be glad you did.

Interesting that an article of surprise and potential (with it's dark side too, or at least questions) raises so many people's hackles.

Neither the posters here pro or con seem to realize the actual higher reality. Kindergarten religion or denial of one because the centrifuge didn't separate it - and ignore the implications rampant in quantum physics. The Divine is not the "GOD" generally taught, and not missing - except in awareness.

As for the Doctors in Argentina, they stated that they did not detect any vital signs, so how were they to know the child was alive. There may have been hundreds of babies like this in the US without vital signs, and they never survived or revived. One can't deny that possibility.

To make a blanket statement that Argentine doctors = bad, US doctors would've caught it is ridiculous. Level of hospital, training, and so much more all play into results. Our US medical system simply has approved ways of killing people - and they do, from the FDA, CDC, on down.

The first HuffPo story I read on this baby said it was discovered in the morgue still alive, but died later. I'm so glad that isn't so, but what's the deal?

America may have it's faults but at least here the doctors can tell the difference between a dead baby and an alive baby.

I am glad of the outcome.

I need to ask why is she suing the hospital if she believes the miracle is her baby did not die? Either there was a miracle or there was negligence.

The "miracle", if you believe in them, is the child survived despite the negligence of the hospital staff.

To all of you non-believers not giving credit to a miracle..............I can ask the same.

great miracle. you kill a baby stuff it in a coffin in a refrigerator on the chance that 12 hours later the mother might want to see her dead baby.
your God most definitely works in mysterious ways.
i will give all the credit in the world to your god for killing a baby
01:39 PM on 04/13/2012
I like how the doctors are not given credit....its all god that is incubating that baby right now in his loving arms....god that is giving life saving oxygen through the breathing tube of love and christianity...and if the doctors get any credit at all....it was because god was helping them...FAIL

If this baby is lucky, she won't survive. Of course there's severe neurological damage. Why wouldn't there be? THAT would be the miracle. Otherwise it would be a curse for that child to live a life she would never know. This is you -- how do you say it -- leave it in the hands of God.

I'm wondering if the refrigeration may have prevented brain damage, as when kids fall into icy ponds and escape brain damage even after being oxygen-deprived for many minutes. The cold slows down their systems so their brains don't require as much oxygen. I don't know--are there any medical people here who could weigh in on that possibility?

It is understandable that one might assume as you do, however, we use cooling blankets to prevent brain damage in our NICU for babies that meet the criteria for the algorithm set up for its use. There's actually an outstanding chance that if she survives, it will be with little or no brain damage, largely thanks to this 'error'.

Brings tears to my eyes. My prayers are with this baby girl and her family. As the mother of a preemie, I know how difficult it is to watch them struggle. She has already proven that she is a survivor and I have hope that she will come out of this ok.

What I dont realize is why all the broken hearts today because this second trimester baby is on the edge of death when so many children in the us are game for having abortions at this same gestation period. I dont get the save this one but kill that one mentality.

The loss of any child, no matter the circumstances, is heart wrenching.
10:59 AM on 04/13/2012
Yes you are correct but do the recepiants of late term abortions morn for their children they killed. This we will never know. But we do know that sometimes criminals mourn for their victims long after the act was commited when it all sinks in and the reality of what they have done takes hold of their emotions. A child should never have to die at the hand of their parents no matter how bad they think they have it.

I believe that abortions this late are reserved for significant risk to the mother or certainty that the child would be born with severe defects, resulting in a short, painful life.

I don't get why people would sentence a child to this and put the family through their own pain and grief.
