Shaken By USC Shooting, Chinese Students Still Seek US Colleges

BEIJING — Shaken by the shooting deaths of two Chinese students near the University of Southern California, China is unlikely to slow its pace of sending its students to U.S. universities.

The deaths of USC graduate students Qu Ming and Wu Ying, both 23, this week in what police suspect was a bungled carjacking came amid a big jump in the number of Chinese pursuing higher education in the U.S.

Much of that has been made possible by China's economic growth, which has produced a richer generation of students. But they have also grown up carefully protected by their parents and possibly not as well equipped to handle the cultural challenges in a country so distinctly different from China.

China sent nearly 160,000 students to U.S. universities last year, more than four times the number 15 years ago and more than any other country, according to the U.S.-based Institute of International Education. Chinese students account for nearly 22 percent of international students, who contribute more than $21 billion to the U.S. economy through tuition and living expenses.

Chinese families hold U.S. education in high regard and are trying to give their children an edge in China's fiercely competitive job market. They are ambivalent about China's education system, which relies on rote learning and has many problems such as plagiarism, even by professors.

That has resulted in a thriving industry serving students eager to study overseas. Students can pay thousands of dollars for prep schools and courses to cram for the SATs and graduate school exams. They also can pay consulting firms to guide them throughout the college application process.

Zhou Rong, a senior consultant working for New Oriental Vision Overseas Consulting, said the new generation of Chinese students – many growing up in one-child households – often lack life skills such as knowing how to rent an apartment and how to exercise caution.

"The students are usually unaware of safety issues. They are not trained to live independently," Zhou said. "That's because Chinese parents usually want their children to focus on nothing but schoolwork."

Her company had made plans before the shooting for a safety workshop for U.S.-bound students. "This will sound an alarm," Zhou said of the Los Angeles shooting.

Chinese parents, students and education consultants said Thursday they think the shooting near USC, the university with the largest international student presence in the U.S., was isolated.

One parent, Wu Qing, said that although she is worried, her 18-year-old son will continue his studies at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.

"He wants to study abroad to develop himself, and we are supportive of that," said Wu, a college teacher in Beijing.

Liu Bo, a student at Peking University, said the shooting will not change his plan to study abroad, likely in a few years. "Probably I will be careful. Maybe my family will be more concerned."

Education consultants who advise Chinese students on studying abroad said the huge jump in the Chinese student population in the United States has increased the chances of one of them getting caught up in a tragedy such as the shooting and in more mundane things such as traffic accidents.

"The probability (for accidents) is higher," said He Lianshui, a consultant for Beijing-based US Visa Dream.

"As long as the attack was not targeted at Chinese, it will not slow the trend of Chinese students wanting to study in the United States," He said.

The murders were reported on state television, with CCTV's all-news channel repeatedly playing a report from Los Angeles with its reporter examining the crime scene and showing a door handle with a bloody smudge, reportedly from Qu when he fled for help.

On China's social media sites, speculation swirled that the two students were from affluent families because they were in a BMW at the time of the shooting. The Chinese public is acutely sensitive to a widening gap between rich and poor.

That speculation caused anger among Chinese students back at USC, who denounced the online portrayal of the victims as indifferent rich students, according to a report by Neon Tommy, a news website sponsored by USC's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

USC and its surrounding neighborhoods remind me of the area around Penn in West Philadelphia. To protect the students from the locals, Penn's Police Department is the largest private security force in the state

My 2¢: Doesn't sound to me like a car jacking. I think the police need to be looking for a jilted lover or a rival at school. I'm getting a sense of déjà vu. . . .

I feared first it's the USC here in South Carolina, but it's the one in far away California. But it's sad anyway, condolences to their families.

I 'm Chinese and heading for US college study this year. A friend of mine who had got admitted to and made up his mind to go to USC just changed his decision and choose another institution instead. I'm going to UChicago, and have no idea about the safety in that neighborhood. Apparently many many Chinese parents who have kids in or on the way towards USA are freaking out like mine.

Correction, South Central LA is not a city..just the general location.. USC is to South Central; UCLA is to West LA

South Central L.A where USC is located is one of the most violent cities in the nation. It is the home of the notorious Crips and the Blood gangs. While the campus is safe within grounds, one should be aware of this fact and be advised to visit the campus in its entirety, including the surrounding areas.

Not to say that UCLA is any safer just because it happens to be situated in the most wealthiest part of the city (adjacent to Westwood, Bel Air/Beverly Hills) students have had their share of being victimized. Over 20 years ago, I was also mugged on campus in a parking structure by a couple of what seemed to be ganger thugs who followed me from the bank. Luckily I was unharmed but they managed to take all my belongings, backpack, my watch and a pair of gold rimmed glasses. Just the other day, I read on the Daily Bruin that a student was robbed at gunpoint near campus. It could happen to anyone anywhere. Just be alert and be aware of your surroundings, especially in Los Angeles

I lived a mile away from USC, one of the "most violent" cities in the nation, and I can assure you, I never felt safer in my life. The area is surrounded by a poor neighborhood, but it also has a really posh section -- right to the north of campus. The people who live in the immediately adjacent area are friendly and hard working. They walk their children to school, take their bikes to work, and have family gatherings on weekends -- just like in any other city in the nation. Take the time to know a neighborhood before you want to comment about how "violent" it is. When was the last time a USC student was killed in this manner? It doesn't happen every day. Sadly, many students have been killed on college campuses recently in other areas of the country, but nobody blames the "unsafe" neighborhoods where they are located.

Welcome to America. Unlike most of the rest of the world, anyone here can get a gun, and almost any kind of gun. We have that in common with Iraq and other mideastern countries, but not so much with more civilized countries. The right wing wants people in states with lax gun laws to be able to carry concealed weapons to states with more stringent regulations without penalty. Right wingers claim to support states rights, but as with most policy, they only stand for the laws they believe in. There is sadly no real left wing in this country, and career politician Democrats are terrified of the NRA. There seems to be no end to the mindless gun violence in our country. What will it take for us to finally admit that this is all insane?
05:27 PM on 04/12/2012
No real left wing...it's called the democrats who have been trying to disarm america for half a century because they prefer unarmed peasants. It is not possible to get any kind of gun legally in the US, there are over 20000 gun laws in the US. Actuallyn those states with concealed carry laws which require the state to grant a license to carry lacking negative evidence have less violent crime. California has stringent gun laws including the usual background check and a 10 day waiting period. So continue your rant...the gangs that roam the stereets of LA are not right wingers they are the drug dealers the left needs for their recreational drugs.

"Unlike most of the rest of the world, anyone here can get a gun"

If by that you mean "illegally from a criminal black market sale", then yes-- anyone can get a gun. But legally? No. How do the young gangsters in cities like Chicago manage to obtain and carry handguns? That has been illegal for many years now, but they still do it. If you have a plan for reducing criminal trade in firearms, I am sure the government of Mexico (among others) would like to hear from you. Despite their famously strict gun laws, the current rates of gun-related and overall violent crime is worse than that of the USA.

As for legal concealed carry, we have been doing that here in Oregon since 1990. Our gun related crime and accident rates have gone steadily downward over the last 20 years, and the predicted "wild west shoot-outs" have not materialized. "Mindless gun violence" is not being caused by people like myself who own firearms, have no criminal record and carry legally. I am not a "right winger", by the way-- I have been an Oregon Democrat for 40 years.

Gun crime has been going down not only in Oregon with legal concealed carry, but all over the country. The reason gun crime is so high in Mexico is because there is so much poverty there. Compare the US with western Europe, where gun crime is far lower than here.

This had "Hit" written all over it.. This was not a car jacking....
10:16 AM on 04/13/2012
I agree with you. Police should be interviewing classmates and rivals in school and love. The pieces do not add up to a car jacking. The girl was outside her apartment in her BMW. Someone jealous of her (or him) for whatever reason was lying in wait and executed the two of them. That person was not interested in preserving or stealing that car. That person wanted them both dead--this smacks of jealous rage.

Just take the time to get to know the area in which you choose to attend school. The area around USC is terrible. USC is located in South Central LA. Why were they sitting in a car at 1am in such a bad area? I can only guess that they just didn't know how bad the area is or was. Take the time to learn about the environment you choose to go to school in...Especially when you are paying so much to attend a University these days.

Crime is not synonymous with areas that you speak of, but crime happens in so-called upscale areas too in and around colleges. Also, unless you are unaware, crime and high and even horrible mass crimes are experienced worldwide.

Do they know who the killer(s)is/are??? Do they know and intentionally not arrested him/her/them??? When THAT becomes the case, then you can spout your nonsense. I'll even join you. Because THAT would be a travesty, wouldn't it. Until then, these murders are no different than the hundreds(thousands?) that take place in this country daily
