Chicago White Sox Home Opener 2012: Sox Face Detroit Tigers At U.S. Cellular Field Opener (VIDEO)

White Sox Win Home Opener Over Tigers

Updated story

The Chicago White Sox on Friday topped the defending American League Central champion Detroit Tigers in the team's home opener at U.S. Cellular Field.

The team headed into Friday's game on the heels of a two-game winning streak, NBC Chicago reports. The Sox win further marked the team's fifth consecutive home opener win. The Tigers were 5-1 heading into Friday's showdown.

"We're sure glad to be going home. It was a long spring training, then two tough series on the road," Robin Ventura, the Sox's manager, previously told NBC of the game.

Veteran first baseman Paul Konerko told the Associated Press that he still gets butterflies heading into the team's home opener even as he heads into his 14th season with the Sox.

Among the changes South Side baseball fans can look forward to at The Cell this season are Boingo-supplied Wi-Fi service, which will be free as part of introductory offer, as well as some new largely meat-centric cuisine to nosh on, including pastrami bacon hot dog toppings, the new "DaBurger Double Play" burger, which comes equipped with cheddar, bacon, barbecue sauce and caramelized onions. The "Juicy Lucy" burger is stuffed with bacon and cheddar cheese, CBS Chicago reported.
