This couldn't have come at a better time. Just as we're really settling in to spring, the modern home magazine Dwell has launched a special issue that's devoted entirely to outdoor living, on newsstands now.

The heavy tome, titled Dwell Outdoor, is packed with products and inspiring spaces that stay true to the magazine's "At Home In The Modern World" slogan. You'll find everything from tiny treehouses and cool RV trailers to lavish poolhouses and rooftop gardens from around the (modern) world.

We had a quick chat with Dwell's senior editor Kelsey Keith about the first-ever Dwell Outdoor issue and how it came about. And, don't miss the slideshow below for a sneak peek of the issue.

We've seen so many changes to shelter publications already this year, and we're curious to know why Dwell finally decided to do a special outdoors issue now.
With our special issues we’ve always referenced our archives, taking incredible projects as a whole and packaging it. And we felt that there was enough content. We were also able to highlight a few new things. One of which is the Lake/Flato project in Texas featured on the cover. And, this issue has a lot more product than anything we’ve ever done before. With our special issues we feel that it’s something that you want to keep. So, it’s not just timely but it’s timeless.

Indoor outdoor living has become a popular idea in many homes over the past few years, how does this special Dwell Outdoor issue add to that concept?
The connection of indoor and outdoor spaces is a big part of modernism. It speaks to the way we live now. Houses are much less formal than they used to be and there’s not much division of space. We don’t think of the featured spaces as a garden on a home tour; these are outdoor living rooms in every sense of the word.

How did the treehouse story come about and where did the editors find all the treehouses?
We have a lot of people who send us treehouse projects all the time. We’ve been saving these up and they’re just so cool. Some of the treehouses in the special issue were featured in a roundup in 2006, and one of them is new.
