Elliott Moore Ironed Clothing On Child's Back, Sentenced To 12 Years For Child Abuse

Man Who Ironed Clothing On Child's Back Sentenced To 12 Years

An Illinois man who confessed to burning an 18-month-old girl in his care was sentenced to 12 years in prison Wednesday.

A child in the care of Elliott Moore, 43, a live-in childcare provider in Rockford, was brought to Rockford Memorial Hospital on Feb. 5, 2010 with a large, open burn mark on her back, according to WREX News. Her mother, who discovered the injury after Moore had left the home, reported that the child had been in his care and notified police.

Under questioning, Moore confessed that the child was on his lap, making it difficult for him to iron, so he laid one of his work shirts on the child's back and ironed it, causing a deep burn, the Rockford Register-Star reports. Moore said that when the child woke up crying and he noticed the burn marks, he iced her back and returned her to bed. Moore was arrested on Feb. 24, 2010.

Moore was sentenced to 12 years in jail on Class 2 felony charges of aggravated battery to a child, the Associated Press reports. His jail time was extended beyond the sentencing range of three to seven years due to the victim's age, according to the Star.
