"'Looper' will be the 'Drive' of 2012," wrote GQ senior editor Mark Lotto on Twitter. "Please discuss."
First of all, there's the premise: in the future, where time travel now exists, organized crime operations send people they want killed back to the present, where loopers -- future contract killers living in the present -- dispose of them with extreme prejudice. Things get dicey, when one of the loopers (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) finds himself staring at his future self (Bruce Willis) with orders to kill him. Er, kill himself. From the future.
Confused? As a bearded Jeff Daniels says halfway through the new trailer: "This time travel crap just fries your brain like an egg."
Beyond the loopy (ding!) premise, there's also the cast -- Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Willis and JoGo as Bruce Willis; through the magic of facial prosthetics, contact lenses and vocal machinations, Gordon-Levitt is almost believable as a young Bruce -- and crew. "Looper" is directed by Rian Johnson, the Wes Anderson-y filmmaker behind the underrated twosome of "Brick" and "Brothers Bloom." None of those Anderson affectations seem very much on display in the trailer for "Looper" -- which is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on whether you ever wanted to see Wes Anderson direct a time-travel actioner with gunplay, explosions and Bruce Willis.
All in all: yes, please. There's even a banging music cue: "K.I.L.L." by Nick Murray and Mark Moore. The "Looper" trailer might not be as operatic as the amazing teaser for "Drive," but it's pretty awesome all the same. Just one question: which guy has the Albert Brooks against-type breakout role in this one? Gotta be Daniels, right?
Watch in HD over at Apple. "Looper" hits theaters on Sept. 28.
