Mitt Romney NRA Speech: Presumptive GOP Nominee Addresses Conference

Mitt Romney Nra Speech

CHARLES BABINGTON   04/13/12 05:13 PM ET  AP

ST. LOUIS — The presidential campaign briefly veered from the emotional Mommy Wars on Friday to the back-burner issue of gun rights, with Mitt Romney telling the National Rifle Association that President Barack Obama is not protecting gun owners – even though the topic has rarely arisen during his time in office.

Without offering details, Romney said that Obama would like to erode gun owners' rights.

"We need a president who will enforce current laws, not create new ones that only serve to burden lawful gun owners," Romney told thousands of NRA members in St. Louis for their annual convention. "President Obama has not. I will."

Obama has said relatively little about firearms, deeply disappointing gun-control groups. Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said the president's record "makes clear the he supports and respects the Second Amendment, and we'll fight back against any attempts to mislead voters."

The gathering of gun enthusiasts comes as Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee, is trying to woo conservative groups to consolidate his base after fending off challengers on his right. His relationship with gun owner groups is uneasy.

Running for the Senate in 1994, Romney said: "I don't line up with the NRA." A decade later he became a lifetime NRA member.

The NRA convention is a must-do for any Republican candidate. But this week it interrupted a new campaign narrative that Romney would like to extend: the view that top Democrats look down on stay-at-home moms.

Romney used the NRA setting, in the domed arena where the St. Louis Rams play football, to make his first public comments on the topic. He brought a central player and key supporter: his wife, Ann, who stayed home to raise their five sons.

Democratic activist Hilary Rosen set off the tempest Wednesday by telling CNN that Ann Romney never worked a day in her life. The ensuing uproar knocked Democrats off their message that Republicans are insufficiently concerned about women's rights, including access to birth control.

In St. Louis, Mitt Romney began his 24-minute speech by calling his wife "a hero" and "my sweetheart," adding: "I happen to believe all moms are working moms."

Ann Romney praised working fathers as well as mothers, then left the stage to her husband and his appeal to the gun-rights group.

Mitt Romney told the group: "We need a president who will stand up for the rights of hunters, sportsmen, and those seeking to protect their homes and their families. President Obama has not; I will."

Asked for details to support the claims, Romney's campaign said Obama has appointed judges, including Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, who have supported moves such as placing temporary limits on importing semiautomatic assault weapons. The campaign said Attorney General Eric Holder has not adequately backed people's rights to own and use firearms.

But gun-control groups such as the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence have expressed dismay over the lack of attention to their concerns. In its most recent assessment, in 2010, the group flunked on Obama on all seven issues it deemed important.

Campaigning in 2008, Obama said: "I believe in people's lawful right to bear arms. ... There are some commonsense gun safety laws that I believe in. But I am not going to take your guns away."

Dan Gross, president of the Brady group, said he is happy that Obama recently spoke in support of the family of Florida shooting victim Trayvon Martin and called for more national dialogue on gun violence following last year's shooting of then-Rep. Gabriel Giffords, D-Ariz., which killed six people.

"Our disappointment is that his voice is really yet to be heard in that conversation," Gross said. He said Romney is pandering to the NRA, a group he accuses of abetting the killings of thousands of people.

Neither Romney nor other NRA speakers – former presidential contender Rick Santorum and still-trying candidate Newt Gingrich were among them – alluded to the high-profile Martin case. A volunteer neighborhood watchman has been charged with second-degree murder for fatally shooting the unarmed teenager, who was walking in a gated community.

The NRA strongly backed Florida's "stand your ground" law, at the heart of the unfolding case.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Romney "believes that efforts to craft `stand your ground' legislation should be left up to the individual states."

When Romney ran successfully for Massachusetts governor in 2002, the NRA gave his Democratic opponent a higher rating on gun-rights issues but made no endorsement.

Massachusetts quadrupled its gun-licensing fee while Romney was governor. He signed a law that made permanent a ban on assault-type weapons, although it was coupled with some measures backed by gun-rights groups.

As he was considering his first presidential run in 2006, Romney became a lifetime NRA member.

Romney drew snickers in 2008 by claiming he sometimes hunts "small varmints." He showed more humility and humor last month in Alabama, where he said he hoped to go hunting with a friend who "can actually show me which end of the rifle to point."

Gingrich, who addressed the NRA convention after Romney, said the United Nations should adopt a treaty "to extend the right to bear arms to every person on the planet." Such "human rights," he said, would reduce rapes and child killings worldwide.

There is NO presidency that can withstand the intransigence of the other party going on STRIKE and which will constantly put this nation at risk and stalemated for 4 long years.

They set this up the moment he was elected. They bragged about their plan and they implemented it by demonizing him and road blocking whatever he favored.

They don't deserve to be in power ever again as far as I'm concerned.

They define what is the worst part of our national politics. If it weren't for hate they wouldn't exist as a party anymore.

I will never ever vote for a Republican again.

The Republican Party is anti-American as evidenced by their sociopathic tendencies by not supporting legislation that they previous supported before Barack Obama was elected. That’s the pure evidence.

What's that tell you about their interests?

Maybe it has always been a hi-tech lynching; Republican style.

Funny how old Mitt is all for guns now that there is not risk to him. But when he had his chance to really hold a weapon in the service of his country he thought it better to do a Mission in France. And to hear him tell it that was rough duty. No running water and people slamming doors in his face. See old Mitt was of age during Viet Nam, but as all the "Chicken Hawks" of that era he found better things to do. I would bet that somewhere on that Black Wall in Washington D.C. there is the name of a Mormon kid that would have much rather been on a church mission in France than on some Fire Base or Hill in Viet Nam. Just that his daddy did not have lots of money. Yep Mitt, you are a real peach.

I saw it. It was an awesome speech. I was very impressed and Mitt is showing more and more each day why he will become POTUS.

I'm not saying this because of my political views, but from a fair assessment of the speech. I'm not the type of person that would get on here and say it was awesome if weren't. Even it one doesn't agree with him politically, they cannot truthfully say is was not an excellent speech.

Yeah, thats why I would vote for him as President. Because of one speech. Geeezzee.
07:56 PM on 04/14/2012
So by your logic, if Obama had a brilliant speech, that means I would vote for him. Wow, that really makes a lot of sense. To insinuate that I'm that dense is insulting.

Let me explain it again since you seem not to understand. The speech proves that he has the intangibles to be POTUS. If someone is a left-wing radical, they are not going to vote for him no matter how brilliant his speech, or how deserving he his of the position.

What if Congress passes a Bill that requires gun lovers to do a 6 month military service in Somalia or Afghanistan or Zaire before getting a license to own a gun? Would Mitt support such a Bill? What about Obama?

Is that your position?

This is a good move for Mitt stir up the paranoid thoughts and anxiety of getting their guns taken away before the hordes attack.

First he was against the NRA because that's what got him votes in Massachusetts. Now he is on the national stage and is a lifetime member of the NRA. He has taken both sides of everything.

Actually we need "more" guns in the hands of everybody. Pretty soon we'd have so many people with so many guns that nobody would take a chance at shooting anybody.

All politicians flip flop on issues depending on what the mind set of their opponents are. Most of them will do or say just about anything to get elected. The problem is that when we send people to Washington to represent the wishes of the people that doesn't always happen. In fact it seldom happens. Our representatives seem to think they know what our needs and desires are better than we do...no wonder people do not make a special effort to get out and vote. We need to clean out Congress and start all over again...that will never happen though. Just to many people will walk into a voting booth and vote straight tickets and then wonder why our country is headed down the drain.

I watched about 2 minutes of his speech; Mitt said President Obama's name so many times in that 2 minutes - I just changed the channel; how can Mitt claim to know so much about President Obama - when he doesn't even know who "he" is the majority of the time. He say 4 more years of President Obama will be bad 4 the country as if he has a "crystal ball" that shows the future or something; on with the debates - this will "shut" him up - once and 4 all. Have U ever gotten sick & tired of someone talking so negatively about someone else so much all the time? I'm there! Mitt speaks as if he has a "true" hate-fest going on for our President. How come Mitt?

Guns doesn't make you safer! 1) If someone wants to Kill you @ Home or outside your Home, @ Home the one wants to kill you, with all security system you have @ Home still there is a way for them to dismantle it & kill you, your family @ night while you sleep, outside your Home they can follow you in quite area or they can shoot you in crowd without knowing they have intension of killing you. 2) If you intension is to pick up arms against Goverment, Goverment is very well equiped with Heavy Arms, Helicopters, Tanks, and Fighter Planes where your Guns does not do you any Good. 3) Criminal who go to Jail on regular bases, they will get Gun illegally & they have no hesitation to use it. 4) Some people can not Control their drinking & driving, How can you expect them to be able to Control themselves with Fire Arms 5) Police officers who have Guns & they have a lots of trainig, they get killed on regular bases by Criminals 5) If there wouldn't be any Gun, Maximum Damage to you is getting Injured from Fighting, you still have a chance of survival and find who did it to you 6) Having Guns around Home prevent families from accidental killing or losing your temper or being drunk @ home, Killing your love ones. Countries which Guns are illegal Killing is Minimum. So Please look into this to see if Gun really

Unfortunately. Why don't you tell the Truth. It takes a Person with enemies & unsecure wants to have Guns. If you don't hurt nobody you have nothing to worry about anyone comes after you, Now if you feel guilty all the Guns in the World are not going to Protect You! It Takes a Chicken to ask for a Gun. Constandse---"Based on almost daily reports of intended and accidental slayings of gang members and by-standers, the streets of Chicago are deadlier than those of Bagdad due to an abundance of handguns."
-------------------
I cite this true statement so I can ask why it is then, that Chicago-minded residents would ask people from far more peaceful places in our country to submit their legal ideals and handgun instead of addressing the real problem-----------which is the Chicago-mindset that funding nicer "resort-like prisons" with fabulous expensive gyms is somehow the answer to crime and murder while voting against funding better equipment and training for the police forces who have to deal with illegally armed criminals?

Sen0bama voted to do that.
