Oklahoma City Tornado 2012: Kansas, Nebraska And Oklahoma Brace For Storms

Oklahoma Tornado

OKLAHOMA CITY, April 14 (Reuters) - Residents of Oklahoma, Nebraska and Kansas braced for a major tornado outbreak predicted for Saturday, and officials in Oklahoma City said a small twister already had touched down there.

No injuries were reported from the tornado in southwest Oklahoma City early Saturday. One home had major roof damage, and trees, power lines and fences were down, said Kristy Yager, a spokeswoman for Oklahoma City.

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are expected Saturday afternoon and evening over central and eastern Kansas, central and eastern Nebraska and central and north central Oklahoma, the National Weather Service said.

The weather service called it a "potentially very dangerous situation" and said severe storms are also possible from north Texas to Iowa to South Dakota and Minnesota.

"The storm environment appears to be very favorable for supercell thunderstorms capable of producing very large hail and damaging tornadoes for long paths from late afternoon until at least midnight," said an advisory from the National Weather Service. "Fast-moving tornadoes continuing after dark will heighten the risk to life and property."

Large cities that could be affected include Omaha and Lincoln in Nebraska; Topeka and Wichita in Kansas; and Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma, the weather service said.

"Especially with it being a weekend, we really want to make sure that the public is aware that this is a serious threat and make sure that people are prepared," said Keli Cain, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.

On Friday, a tornado was seen near the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman just after 4 p.m. local time - the same town that holds the National Storm Prediction Center, according to Rick Smith, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

The tornado ripped roofs from buildings, downed power lines and uprooted trees across Norman, a town of 110,000 people 20 miles (32 km) south of Oklahoma City, television images showed. City Hall was among the structures damaged, Cain said. (Reporting By Corrie MacLaggan; Editing by Colleen Jenkins and Philip Barbara)

We bought a storm shelter recently and it’s great. I feel so much safer; well worth the cost. Survive a storm, get a shelter!!

No winter to speak of, no spring, just straight to summer, rampant tornadoes, etc. Either J.C is p.o.'d or maybe Al Gore could be right. I suspect the latter.

It's scary to those who are stuck in these storms and I just want them to know there is a few of us out here who are thinking of them and wishing them well. Hope they stay safe.

Hmmm, from the shape of this storm cell, it looks like the midwest is really getting screwed.

Last year, Iowa City got cheated of its storms, barely a rumble all summer long. Being at elevation 666, that Devil protects this liberal oasis and storms just go around. I miss lightning storms... Hopefully the religious activity around us will not jinx our protection... Back a few years ago, he let 3 small tornadoes in so they could take out a sorority, a church, and the Dairy Queen, but they deserved it, I'm sure... Hope we at least have some good lightning...

How hateful of a message is this "but they deserved it, I'm sure..." No one ever deserves something like this to come into their life. Please tell me you are not a religious person because if you are, you have been receiving the wrong message - the message should be about love and peace, not wishing harm and destruction onto others.

I gather you have no sense of humor. That was tongue-in-cheek humor, not serious at all. I did find it interesting that those 3 things were destroyed, in light of the Christian idea that God uses weather to judge people. Yet, when we had the flood in 2008, the water came within 10 feet of the local adult book store and then receded. I wished I could ask Pat why that was... lol...

Not even trailer parks? Tornadoes always hit trailer parks.

Looks like another bad tornado season on the way. Last year was bad enough. While tornadoes overall are definitely on the increase, it does seem that the worst kinds of tornadoes are NOT on the increase, thankfully:

We should do something about climate change before its too late. The fact is, no one is really sure where that is.

It's not 'global warming' nor 'climate change' it's gods punishing thise fornicators in the mid west.

Are you kidding me--if the gods are upset with the Midwest it is because it's BORING around here. Not a fornicator or any kind of partier as far as the eye can see. I just hope the gods will let met get outta here before they level the place...

Seems like poetic justice that the most staunch climate change denier states are going to be wholloped by historicly severe storms. If they ever face the reality of the science, reversing the effects of fossile fuel pollution will take several generations.

Al Gore was right and the fossile fuel industry and their puppets in congress were/are wrong.

This is the kind of story that makes wish I could afford to buy and maintain a big ol' surplus Soviet submarine.

If there's one place to live that's more dangerous than a trailer in Kansas in April, it's an ex-Soviet submarine.

Au Contraire! Not all Soviet surplus subs are all that dangerous. I'm wishing for a diesel /electric boat. They should be cheap and reliable. Just submerge a couple of dozens of feet and you are safe from tornados, hurricanes, zombies, labrador retrievers, etc. I'm convinced that this is the first thing Thurston J. Howell the 3rd acquired after surviving his three hour tour. Oh yes, and I have reliable sources.
