Shalom Eisner, Israeli Defense Force Officer, Hits Denmark Protester In Face With M16 Rifle, Is Suspended

By ARON HELLER 04/16/12 01:07 PM ET AP

JERUSALEM — A senior Israeli military officer's seemingly unprovoked assault against an unarmed pro-Palestinian activist drew sharp condemnations Monday, raising questions in Israel over whether the country's heavy-handed approach to nonviolent protesters was exaggerated and causing damage to Israel's image.

The assault, captured on video and featured in all major newspapers and TV broadcasts, follows Israel's high-profile interception at its main airport of dozens of international activists who had planned a solidarity mission with Palestinians in the West Bank. Adding to the sense that Israel may have gone too far, officials said Tuesday that nearly 500 people were erroneously blocked from visiting.

Israel has branded the activists "provocateurs" who posed a security threat to the country. Calling itself the Middle East's only democracy, it says the protesters have their priorities wrong and should instead focus on rampant human rights violations in neighboring Arab countries.

Israel feels it is unfairly singled out internationally and is obsessed about its international image. Leaders often complain about what they say are unfair efforts to "delegitimize" the country with boycotts, divestment calls and other campaigns. The country even has a ministry of public diplomacy that aims to promote the country's image overseas.

But critics say that Israel's policies, not its public relations efforts, are the problem, particularly when it comes to its actions in the occupied West Bank. Saturday's beating of the foreign activist, filmed by another demonstrator as soldiers blocked them from riding bicycles near the West Bank town of Jericho, gave new ammunition to its detractors.

"Any reasonable viewer who sees the clip asks himself how many such incidents take place where there is no documentation, and how the army responds when there is no conclusive and public proof of unjustified violence," wrote Ofer Shelah, a military columnist for the Yediot Ahronot daily.

In the video, Lt. Col. Shalom Eisner is seen smashing a Danish activist in the face with his M-16 rifle. Israel said the group of about 200 activists was attempting to block a main highway and had provoked the soldiers.

The officer, through his confidantes, claimed the activist had previously struck him with a stick, breaking two of his fingers, Israeli media reported. One newspaper ran a photo of him with a bandage on his hand.

The activist, a 20-year-old man from Denmark, said the event was "completely nonviolent." In an interview with The Associated Press, he said he required stitches to his lip from the blow. He refused to be identified, fearing retribution from Israeli authorities.

In Denmark, Foreign Minister Villy Soevndal said the Danish ambassador to Israel had asked authorities for a report on what had happened.

"The Israeli prime minister's comments have been very critical of the incident. I agree with him. We must all condemn the use of force, which apparently has been used against the demonstrators," he said.

The video appeared on all major evening newscasts Sunday and Monday, and the officer was immediately suspended while the incident was investigated.

The military chief, President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu all condemned the officer's behavior. "Such conduct is not characteristic of the soldiers and commanders of the Israeli military, and has no place in the army or the state of Israel," Netanyahu said.

While stressing that the incident was isolated, Israeli officials acknowledged that the assault caused huge damage to Israel, which repeatedly claims its military to be the most moral in the world.

Israel has a long history of troubled relations with international activists. Several pro-Palestinian activists have been killed or maimed in clashes with the Israeli forces over the years.

In the worst instance, Israeli naval commandos clashed with activists on board a flotilla trying to break Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip in May 2010, killing nine activists.

Over the weekend, Israel prevented hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists from entering the country to participate in a solidarity mission drawing attention to Israeli travel restrictions on Palestinians in the West Bank. Some were detained upon arrival at the airport, while others were prevented from boarding flights in their home countries.

While Israel declared victory, some commentators have questioned whether the action simply drew attention to the policies targeted by the protesters.

In another sign that the crackdown might have backfired, the Foreign Ministry said that about 470 of the 1,200 people who were barred from the country should not have been on the list. "We don't know why they were there," said spokesman Yigal Palmor.

Yuli Edelstein, Israel's minister for public diplomacy, rejected the notion that Israel was overreacting with the foreign activists and thus damaging its own image. He said the incident with Eisner highlighted the danger of letting activists roam freely.

"The moment these people are out of control, running around and creating trouble, their dream is to be hit by an officer and get it on camera. It shows that ignoring is not exactly a very good policy," he said.

But critics said the government's overzealous response was doing more harm than good.

Maariv columnist Shai Golden said Israel would be better off ignoring the "band of pampered eccentrics" instead of treating them like terrorists.

"Israel would have dismissed the matter with a shrug, the group of penny-ante anarchists would have turned around and left and our peace of mind would not have been disturbed," he said.

I have seen soldiers and police from the United States, Canada and most of the countries in Europe treat demonstrators worse than how the Israeli soldier treated the Danish terrorist supporter from the International Solidarity Movement. He got up and walked away with nothing more than a bloody nose. Big bloody deal. The soldier should be given a medal for showing bravery and restraint under fire.

Actions not in line with democracy

Israel claims to be the only true example of a democratic state in a Middle East rife with Arab dictatorships. However, its refusal to allow public discourse critical of its policies mirrors the totalitarian actions of the very neighbors Israel condemns.

Paul Scham, professor of Israel studies at Maryland University, said in an interview with Mint Press that Israel is banning those who oppose its policies at greater rates than in the past, a reflection of the government’s recent intolerance of criticism. Scham also noted that those recently barred are “in no way a security threat,” but are primarily academics and writers.

Proof that Israel is sham democracy , and in reality a totalitarian sate of terror, and intimidation !

The most famous example of public banishment occurred in 2010, when renowned American activist and professor Noam Chomsky was told by Israeli immigration officials that he would not be allowed to cross the border from Jordan to the West Bank. Chomsky had publicly spoken out against the occupation of the West Bank. He was on his way to lecture at Palestinian Bir Zeit University in the West Bank when he was banned from entering.

Even the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) recognized the move to ban Chomsky as a sign of a “totalitarian regime”. ACRI Attorney ODed Feller criticized the move of denying Chomsky to enter by stating:

“The decision to prevent an individual from expressing his or her views by denying entry is characteristic of a totalitarian regime. A democratic state, which considers freedom of expression a guiding principle, does not close itself off to criticism or uncomfortable notions, and does not refuse entry to visitors whose views it does not accept, but rather deals with them through public discourse.”

You should be ashamed at yourselves; over 6,000 comments for what? For a punk that got a smack in his face? Look how police forces in the western world disburse riots and disturbances. Watch this video of how Danish police treat Danish people. Then ask yourselves what is the reason that you all bark!!

Israeli soldiers arent police officers and have no rights WHATSOEVER to slap foreigners around who are visiting Palestine.

They have no more rights to walk around Palestine slapping people in the face than I do marching into your house uninvited and smacking you in the face with a gun.

The problem with the NYPD and many Police Departments all over the USA is they have adopted and embraced IDF tactics and have subcontracted with the totalitarian Israelis and IDF to teach them how to deal with American protesters , the same way they deal with and treat Palestinian protesters, and Jewish decedents back in Israel . And that my friend is a fact ! welcome to the IDF of the untied states of America.

03:03 PM on 04/19/2012
Anit-Christian? Do you know that the Dane is a Christian, anyone else? Are the organizers of ISM Christians? Were the flytilla organizers organizing a Christian event? Really?

Palestinians do not want to form an Unity Government, and they do not want to negotiate Peace or the establishment of a Palestinian State. They want something entirely different. Any doubt what that is? Read what they write and say. See videos and hear it coming out of their mouths. Read the PLO and Hamas Charters. Closely watch and analyze their actions.

Last year's endrun around PEACE negotiations (again, Peace is the opposite of their objectives) collapsed and did not even require an U.S. veto. They tried to go to the International Court, and their attempt to file a lawsuit failed: No Standing (to sue). Only recognized nations can go that route.

The endless attacks (out of Gaza and otherwise, the incitement, deliberate creation of negative PR, does NOT make a Palestinian State. It does not help that the Palestinians can no, and will not, form an Unity Government either.

Emotional attachment to either side is irrational and does not take facts and issues into accoount.

It has to be questioned why someone from Western Europe would spend several hundreds (thousands?) of dollars to fly to another country and protest. My presumption is that he was looking for trouble and he found it and it's name was M-16. Life is simple, don't make trouble for yourself and you won't have a rifle butt upside your head.

How should Israeli protestors be treated in Israel?"

Peres and Bibi shouldn't condemn that actions. they try to much to be nice to the world. it won't work. very few in Israel think that Dan bo didn't have get something in the face.

The d\Dane came on an organized event. Organized by the ISM. See their website and understand what they stand for and who they are. The event was a *flytilla*, comparable to the flotillas of previous years. They were trying to fly in thousands, but, unfortunately for them, most were prevented from boarding planes in their home countries. Palestinians are in a declared WAR with Israel. The ISM and other groupes are taking sides in an ongoing war, which uses as one of their means creating dverse PR. Other events have been scheduled and planned by the Arabs and the ISM. Abu Mazen and other Arabs recently planned massive planned visits by Muslims to Jerusalem to *show* that it is a Muslim City. They planned AND announced that in Cairo. You may find tht on the ISM website as well. Who knows. The Dane was not single, and he was not there alone, so, your comment is a deliberate lie. Again, the Dane was one of the few who got through, and were not prevented to board at home.
