Tornado Strikes Prom At Kansas High School, Students Spend Night In Shelter (WATCH)

Tornado Prom

The students of Trinity Academy High School in Wichita, Kansas got big surprise on prom night. It was a memorable evening, but not in the way they would've expected, as the biggest night of their high school years was interrupted by a tornado. When sirens began to sound, the event's 90 attendees evacuated their school gym and headed to a nearby tornado shelter.

The tornado was one of over 100 to hit the Plains states in 24 hours, according to the New York Times. Few were killed or injured, which some experts attribute to steadfast warning systems.

Prom-goer Lindsey Porter told CBS News: "We know the tornado's on its way. We heard that it's 10 to 15 minutes away. I've been outside; it's pouring down rain. It's kind of scary."

Without reception in the underground bunker, the students were unable to contact their parents to let them know where they were or to check on the status of the approaching storm. But the students kept their spirits up by belting out songs like "Singing in the Rain."

"It's ridiculous it happened on prom night, of all nights," says Wichita student Preston Crisp. "But it creates a big memory."

After two hours in the shelter, it was announced that the students could safely leave the shelter, and they were able to party at ground-level for the last 30 minutes of prom.

Trinity Academy isn't the only high school affected by a tornado to have a happy ending. Lady Antebellum chose another tornado-ravaged high school in Indiana as the winner of their "Own The Prom" contest. The band will play an event for the schools' juniors and seniors on May 16, to be followed by public concert to raise funds that will benefit the entire Henryville, Indiana community.

"They will be talking about the tornadoes for the rest of their lives," West Clark Community Schools Superintendent Monty Schneider told CNN. "But this event will give them something positive to reflect on about that time."

Don't know anything about Trinity Academy, but it appears the students had a great time, despite the inconvienience ,and should hold these memories for a long time . You take the same situation somewhere else in the country ,and things could get out of hand .Demanding the government pay them back for the prom dresses, and tux rentals ,because they were forced to take shelter .They want a free lunch, and this and that free, free, free.

A lot of people are asking why the prom was not rescheduled. My own personal opinion is this; The bunker they were in looked much sturdier and safer than most homes (unless families had their own tornado shelter or safe room) and I'm sure the school and parents took that into consideration. I had to laugh when viewing the kids still having a good time and relieving fears of others by singing and dancing. Memories for the rest of their lives which will always keep them close.

I'm not sure how your comment addresses the fact that it was not rescheduled? I agree that the area did look safe. It must have caused a lot of concern for parents though being separated from their children in the midst of a tornado. In the end they wasted money and time getting ready for a prom that they enjoyed for 1/2 an hour. Some of the kids probably didn't even stay for the 1/2 hour due to the chaos and concern of family members..they were kinda robbed of their prom.

Yeah--but they'll always remember where it was held!

Wow, you guys are bickering over time and money?

There was a TORNADO that took LIVES and these kids were SAFE.

Get a life.

Well, at least lock-ins are always fun!

When the news forecasted a night of MANY tornadoes far in advance, WHY did they still have the prom? Seems like that would have been the time to cancel the event -- before they were all put in danger. They don't have trouble cancelling school for snow days! I'm glad it had a good outcome but it could have been much different! All of the tornadoes don't give enough warning to get them shipped to a shelter!

When I went to my prom and stayed out all night I told my parents the same thing. It worked then too.

that's one way of going about it because if that tornadoe had gotten fierce over them, they're reaction would have been totally different, so i'm glad to not see the fear that comes behind these forces of nature, mostly disasterous.

when you grow up in tornado alley you get used to it.

I love how they only let them celebrate for the last 30 minutes of the scheduled time. You would think they could have extended the time just a bit
01:48 PM on 04/17/2012
Totally agree, how could they not...... how sad is that. In face they should let these kids redo the prom completly what a waste of money on dresses, tuxs and flowers music whatever what sports the school and adults were to give them 30 minutes wowwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Couldn't help but notice as the girls danced, I felt like I was watching a Patty Duke show re-run. Could it be that some of the dance moves of the 60s are being revived? How cool what that be!
Nah, must have been my imagination running away with me. Looks like they made the best of a bad situation though.

I am from Kansas, and know that there are times when they say tornado warning, and nothing materializes. I also know there have been times the sirens either don't go off, or they have no warning at all, and one drops down. But this time they had over 24 hour notice that this was developing, and it was going to be bad. Why didn't they just reschedule all the proms in the Wichita area that night? Why change the locale at the last minute? They did that with several schools, and as a parent, yes my child would have been frustrated that it was rescheduled, but they also would have been at home, instead of out running around. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion. I am not trying to start a debate or anything. Just expressing my thoughts and opinions on the matter.

well, they definitely looked like they were in a pretty protected bunker, an actual tornado shelter...They were probably safer than if they had been in their own houses.
01:35 PM on 04/17/2012
This is true. But, they had to drive to get to the school for the dance, and then transfer to the shelter. Then they had to drive home. It just erkked me that the schools didn't take the whole picture into consideration.

These young people made lemonade out of the lemons they were dealt with. I think that helped to prevent panic and lessened some of their fears and those of their classmates. Thank God they are all safe. They will never forget their prom night!

Why wasn't it rescheduled?

What happened there will be remembered much longer than a prom with NO calamity! Those students have something in common with each other that will always be part of their memories.

The same thing happened 21 years ago to me, only it was my high school graduation day. We had marched all the way onto the field when the sirens went off & it started to hail. So we tried to fit 400+ people into an unairconditioned gym. It was 90 degrees & everybody was drenched. What a mess! But I will always remember it though & so will they. Makes some good memories! And yes, my lacquered Bon Jovi hair still stood. God bless Aqua-Net!

I should have bought shares in that company... my daughter went through the same thing with the stiff hairdo. Now she's more into the natural look.. may be because she doesn't want to pay for her own hairspray?? LOL

50 years from now these students will remember their prom.... unlike me...
