Supersizing Makes Consumers Feel More Important, Says Study

Big Mac

What's the real reason consumers like their meals supersized? They boost a person's sense of importance, according to a new study.

The report by David Dubois, Derek Rucker and Adam Galinsky, which appears in the most recent issue of the Journal of Consumer Research, suggests that people may associate larger foods with status, providing an alternate explanation for why Big Macs are so popular.

The three authors explain in the study:

Research has found that features of a product, such as size, can influence behavior by serving as cognitive shortcuts. For example, at a perceptual level, people believe taller glasses contain more liquid than shorter glasses. At a behavioral level, larger packages of familiar and branded products encourage more use than smaller packages, without consumers being aware that package size is affecting their consumption levels.

In one of their half dozen experiments, the researchers had study participants read two news articles, one explaining that "63 percent of the 1,000 most influential Americans are fit," and the other that "63 percent of the 1,000 most influential Americans are overweight." Afterward, participants were asked to pick a candy treat in one of five different-sized options. Those who read the article equating influence with obesity were more likely to choose a larger candy than their counterpart. The effect was especially pronounced in people primed to feel less powerful.

But there's hope for the supersizing public. In the same experiment as above, those who read the article equating fitness to influence were more likely to choose the smaller portion. The results suggest that people can be primed to choose healthier dining options, which may help curb the ongoing obesity epidemic.

Larger food=status? How does the food we eat and the way we consume it define our identity? https://vimeo.com/39092225

So manipulation of perception is responsible for their annoyingly skinny cups that refuse to stand upright? They can keep at it and I'll keep bringing my own drinks.

I always swing through the McDonalds for a small diet coke while a grocery shop. A little treat, its the only thing I get from there....ever. I even say I shouldn't give them my buckfor a drink because what they serve is poison. However, I've NEVER had a problem with the cup standing up straight. That's really weird.

They tip out of my cup holders because they're too narrow and they're too unstable to set anywhere.

There seems to be an American mantra: If some is good then more is better - Unfortunately it does not always work that way --

Well McDonald's isn't even good to begin with, so what's the excuse now?

Also boosts your weight and girth...and your chances for diabetes and heart attack, among others.

Unexpected floor show in Las Vegas (after too many scotch & waters), circa mid-1990s: witnessed a massively obese guy in a Mickie D's suddenly hit the floor face-down, clinching a french fry...and in full cardiac arrest.

Two small-framed EMTs quickly arrived on-scene, and had extreme difficulty rolling him over to administer oxygen and jolt his ticker. And time was definitely clicking away for this cat. (Great imagery, however, for an American Heart Association or CDC PSA campaign.)

Odds are at that moment, he was truly regretting..."Positive-Size-to-Status."

Sometimes I think people that treat their health that way really don't regret anything. They know exactly what they look like and what they eat. They just don't care about their life. Its almost like a really really slow suicide.

I wonder about that. I knew a woman who occasionally did house cleaning for us, had the worst diet ever, I'd offer to buy her lunch and she'd opt for a huge order of fries and a root beer float, seemed really happy with her life.

Died of a heart attack at age 46, it was really sad.

It's pretty sad to think that some people feel they've improved their social status or importance by eating more crap than the next person.

So by choosing to be obese it makes them feel powerful. It is a power. Fat is a choice. It is a sad choice to make.

ALL fat isn't a choice. This, however, is. I'm not surprised there's a major psychological trigger though.

Matter is not created out of nothing. You must take in the amount of calories needed to create fat.

I would agree that there are medical issues and drugs that are not helpful. However even on prednisone one can make the choice to eat even fewer calories and stay thin.

forget the self importance, throw a few slide potatoes into the vegetable steamer, cooked em up with other vegetables too......... turn off the steamer, then go and get your hamburgers, come home and feed the family some fresh potatoes with that hamburger.... and maybe even buy a litre of soda and save, if you are in an economical situation........ if you have the money, then maybe buy some other healthy drink.....

The hamburger is cheap, compared to the prices of the fries and the soda....... the price of the fries and soda, set you way back (it's just for convience), and YOU know it!

If you have alot of money, buy some grass fed beef and really enjoy a quality meal.

Did you just imply that a Litre of Soda is a healthy drink?
05:05 PM on 04/23/2012
No, my mistake, I was thinking steamed vegetables, and a cheaper alternative..... did you know that pepsi and coke own the majority of fast food restaurants, and they still charge about 2 bucks for an x-large filled with ice.......
yeah, but I didn't mean it was healthy, and the cheapest.... water is the best for you, and economical if you have a good filtering distillation application.....

You found the mistake, you win the prize, and the healthy prize is a glass of water!

you know, when I sometimes go out for Sushi, or drink a quality beer, I do see that, and it's a nice feeling to treat yourself to the finer things in life, but i'm pretty sure when i used to go to McDonalds, and super sizing especially, i was just starving, or had the munchies. Maybe when i was a kid, i could see getting that elite status from a big mac then...
10:16 AM on 04/18/2012
Love your comment...

There are definately things to order when you're out to eat that can make you feel "better." To me...its ordering the opposite of McDonald's...let alone supersizing!!! Using your example, ordering myself the specialty rolls for sushi instead of my usually plain spicy tunas makes me feel like I'm treating myself and puts me in a better mood! There are thousands of better options to create this feeling!

Before I became a Vegetarian I used to stop at McDonalds on my way home (because everywhere I've lived there has been one across the street). I felt shame walking home with it, especially if I super sized. Power? I felt weakness.

I see your point about being out for Sushi or at a fancy bar. I feel powerful if I splurge there, but it is more about the money. If I buy everyone a round of drinks it is because "I can afford it because I am so successful"
