Is Derrick Rose The Next Michael Jordan?

Posted: 04/18/2012 8:42 am Updated: 04/18/2012 8:42 am

Derrick Rose Michael Jordan
Derrick Rose sits out due to a groin injury as the Chicago Bulls play the Denver Nuggets on March 26, 2012.

GQ:

At just 23, Derrick Rose already has an MVP award, a $95 million contract, and a direct line to the White House, home of his number one fan. He also has Chicago—the city where he was born and bred—convinced that it's witnessing the second coming of you-know-who.

Derrick Rose isn't even the next Kobe Bryant...The next Michael Jordan? Sometimes responding to a question gives the question more credibility than it ever deserved.

No more wine for this table.

I wish these lame reporters would stop with the next MJ comparisons. When Dr J played it was the same lame argument. Each player is unique and brings their own style to the game! That's what differentiated MJ from Dr J. The next biggest star will bring his own style that will set him apart from the rest!

How many times is that question going to be asked? No player that has received that attention has fulfilled the hope. Enough already. Jordan is gone and he ain't coming back.

Just because you wear a Bulls jersey doesn't make you the next MJ and this is coming from a huge D. Rose fan.

I think one of the things that people forget with the MJ comparison is that MJ didnt get the first ring until Scottie Pippen elevated his game. He was one of those stars that needed the backup and if Pippen had not elevated his game they would never have gotten pass the Pistons.

That is so laughable. The facts are that Pip never would have been what MJ made him to be if he played with another team. MJ made everybody around him better which is why there has not been anything like him since.

Pippen had a pretty great career on his own and led the team to the playoffs when MJ went to "play baseball." Obviously MJ made that team the unbeatable force it was, but Scottie Pippen gave Jordan the teammate he needed to reach the Finals and win the trophy. Without Pippen, MJ would have just relied on himself and his ability, but Pippen gave him a teammate with skills he could trust and believe in, encouraging him to buy into the team concept that Phil Jackson was teaching. MJ didn't make everyone around him better through involving them in the game. He made everyone around him better because you didn't want to let him down and he gave it his all on every play. He was a leader by example and intimidation.

Ridiculous comment if that was the case then he would have done it the FIRST game. If that was the case he would have been able to do it without Pippen he wasnt. The Pistons were the IT team for Defense they humiliated the Bulls on more than one ocasion. Get a reality check its not all about offense. Pippen would be so intimidated by Rodman Lambere and the other Pistons that even though he had the body and the quickeness to take it to the basket he would just settle for the jumper. The Pistons was the Master when it comes to Defense back then. They dont have defensive teams like that now.

No College National Championship (1982)
No National College Player of the Year (1984)

...uhhhh, so, NO.

I still think he's a phenomenal player, though.

In what way.... womanizing? Gambling? He's nowhere near him in on-court accomplishments.

Derek Rose is not like that in fact he is one of the most classy NBA players. I'm no Bulls fan cause I'm Knicks fan but he is a good guy.

I love the guy, but he comes up too small in the biggest games to be compared to MJ. I hope he gets there though. Mostly I'm just hoping he's healthy and productive for the upcoming playoffs. I'm a Boston fan, btw, but I appreciate Rose's game.

I get the gist of the article, but please, please stop with the MJ comparisons. There is and never will be a "next MJ".
