Missouri Teacher Forced 6-Year-Old To Sit In Her Diarrhea

Southwest School

Lisa Skidmore, mother of a kindergarten student at Southwest School in Washburn, Mo., is outraged after her daughter's teacher forced her to wrap a trash bag around herself and sit in her own diarrhea, KY3-TV reports.

"They didn't even bother trying to clean her up or anything," Skidmore told the station. "She still had poop, diarrhea poop, coming out the back, up her front, down her legs."

The girl's father was almost too upset to talk about the incident, but said that he'd likely face criminal charges had he been the one to leave her sitting in her own mess like that.

According to the station, the class had been told to use the restroom before the testing period, so the teacher made the 6-year-old sit in the mess for the duration of the test and during the 20 minutes it took for her mother to drive to the school with a change of clothes.

With the girls' parents pushing to make sure this never happens at the school again, Superintendent Bob Walker told KY3 that district officials "regret what happened."

In March, Gonja Wolf, a high school art teacher in San Diego, was placed under investigation after a 14-year-old female student accused her of forcing her to urinate in a bucket inside the classroom instead of taking a bathroom break.

The girl filed a claim for damages to person or property, claiming the teacher made her do that in the presence of male classmates, and then empty the bucket in the classroom sink.

In January, a 7th grader at Klein ISD in Houston, Texas, claimed he was forced to urinate in a plastic bottle after his teacher refused to allow him to use the restroom.

Despite the student's testimony that he was denied a bathroom break, he still faced one month in "an alternative campus" as punishment, the Houston Chronicle reported.

This is what happens when too much emphasis is placed on MAP testing and not the human decency it requires to teach a child.

This teacher should be fired. This "little" incident will have lasting effect on this child. This girl will have to deal with the humiliation the next year and the next year; this teacher will have the opportunity to subject another child to her brand of teaching. If I was parent of child who was assigned to this class, I would insist that my child be transfer out of her class. This is an impressionable time in a child's life. This teacher shows that she does not know this important fact.

I have a 6 year old and I cannot imagine how humiliated and upset she would be if someone forced her to go through this. It's too bad someone can't force that idiotic teacher to have no bathroom breaks so that she can get a taste of the kind of discomfort and embarassment she inflicted on that poor child! I sincerely hope that the administration punishes the teacher. This kind of thing is why so many good parents are pulling their kids from public school - caring more about following a stupid testing rule than caring for a child - unforgivable.

"Many kids right now are taking Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests, the state standardized testing required by law. Those tests start in third grade, but the superintendent says the reason the teacher was sticking so closely to MAP testing guidelines, even for a kindergartner, is because she was trying to simulate the stringent rules to prepare students for what's to come."

This teacher needs to go. Three years advance preparation of "testing environment" for 6 year olds?? That is stupidity at its finest. Zero common sense, zero compassion. She needs to be in a different line of work, where conformity at all cost is the most important thing. Maybe an office job at the IRS?

Why do you Huff Po moderators intentionally NOT approve posters who provide the logical reasons for this situation?

It's bad enough your site publishes only one side of a story to create hype and emotion, but to not let people give reasons WHY things happen is irresponsible and criminal.

This teacher's LIFE has been threatened because sites like this intentionally make her look evil, despite the fact the school knows there is no reason to discipline her..

Common sense would say if she was that evil and negligent, she already would be placed on leave. Abusive teachers are IMMEDIATELY removed from the class and can only return after an investigation clears her.

The one lacking common sense is you.

I doubt you will approve this message.

Well, hello. I have nothing whatsoever to do with whether your posts get published, or how quickly.
You might want to check with the superintendent there in Missouri, who acknowledged that the teacher handled this inappropriately, and that she was under NO obligation to simulate the "stringent environment" that accompanies state tests for THIRD GRADE AND UP.
Total lack of judgement and common sense. I don't think she belongs in a classroom.

I haven't been out of the public school system long. Eleven years this month, to be exact. And while I was in high school, a teacher of ours was accused (rightfully so, I might add) of sexual harassment by a number of female students. He had been at it for many years. While I was not one of the accusers, I was interviewed and he was clearly guilty (for many, many years prior to this as well). He was the female physical education teacher as well as the female basketball and softball coach. He was found guilty but due to tenure, not only was he NOT "let go" but he was advanced to principal of the high school when the current one retired!
So, for you to say that your reasoning is "common sense" ... well, I can attest that you are DEAD wrong from personal experience alone.

You need to make sure that you know what you are talking about before you go judging someone for their opinions.
By the by, I am not so far from Washburn and this does NOT surprise me as that school has always proven problematic when I've had to deal with them. From finding empty condom boxes/wrappers scattered about the locker rooms during a 6th grade basketball tournament I participated in there to a number of their students attempting to injure myself and a friend while attending a basketball game there that was their homecoming and they lost to our team.

While there are some politicians who I think it would be appropriate to impose this on, a 6 year old not getting a hall pass is a little harsh.
01:58 PM on 04/24/2012
I think you may have gotten it backwards - the article says "According to the station, the class had been told to use the restroom before the testing period" - so the question that I don't see answered in the article was, did she refuse to go? As disgusting as this is, you can't force someone to go to the toilet and take care of business...not saying it couldn't have been handled differently, but your assumption of "a 6 year old not getting a hall pass" appears completely incorrect.
01:56 PM on 04/20/2012
I don't blame the teacher. She did what she had to do and I'm sure she didn't want the child to have to endure what she did. The problem this article highlights is the testing process that is not developmentally appropriate. Why are they administering these types of tests to 6 year olds in the first place? Have none of these people ever taken a class on childhood development? This is a symptom of a sick system that needs a complete overhaul.

She was NOT required to do this. Kindergarten students in MO do not even take the state tests. This teacher claims she was trying to "simulate" the environment students would face 3 years later, when they ARE required to take state tests. She needs to be fired. Zero common sense or compassion for students. She doesn't even seem to understand the maturity level differences between 6 and 9 year olds. Idiot.
04:40 PM on 04/20/2012
I absolutely blame the teacher. I teach, and I would be willing to put my job on the line before I would cause distress to a child - and I am certain that being forced to sit in your own excrement would cause distress, not to mention the fact that this girl could have gotten a bladder infection from e coli bacteria found in feces. The teacher should be punished in some way or else this kind of thing will too easily happen again.
01:25 PM on 04/23/2012
Now you are the kind of teacher that our schools need more of. I agree completely. As a former daycare director/teacher it doesn't matter what the testing rules are if it comes down to losing my job or causing a child humiliation and distress then hand me my walking papers now. That teacher definitely needs punished.

Where does it say the child asked to go to the bathroom? It only says that they were supposed to go before the upper grades started their testing. It's kindergarten and accidents happen(children at this age will sometimes forget to ask till it's too late)...the other children probably just shrugged it off and really didn't care. And would have been no big deal...but the parents. Have turned this into a media frenzy. I mean really... who calls the media and tells them "my daughter pooped her pants in school and make sure the whole world knows about it". And oh yeah tell them the name of the school and our last name so there is no mistaking who pooped her pants..Way to turn something that would have been forgotten about in a day to something that will embarass and follow your daughter through the rest of her school career. And If they had cleaned her up (with no change of clothes) were they just supposed to let her stand there naked till her parents showed up?

Shaysta....how dare you make sense and use logic? You're supposed to load the bullets into the gun and shoot the teacher like the rest of the "good" parents!

Seriously though......we tell our children never ever ever ever let a stranger touch them and we tell caregivers to never ever ever let a child out of their sight.

Which rule did the parents expect to be broken? The "no touch" rule, the "never alone" rule, the bio-hazard rule that prevents teachers from touching poo?

It amazes me that people can read a story like this and believe that some evil teacher forced a child to sit in her own poop.

Any intelligent parent (you are one) would say "hold on.....there has to be a reason for this aside from 'she's an abuser!"

Great post and thanks for being one of the few who ACTUALLY used common sense.
