Verna McClain Charged: Nurse Admits Shooting Mom, Stealing Newborn Outside Texas Hospital

By MICHAEL GRACZYK and JUAN A. LOZANO 04/18/12 10:54 PM ET AP

Newborn Stolen Mom Shot
Members of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department work the crime scene where a mother was killed and her baby was kidnapped Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in Spring, Texas. A newborn boy was abducted from his screaming mother after she was repeatedly shot outside a suburban Houston pediatric center on Tuesday, according to investigators searching for the suspected shooter who sped off with the infant in a blood-stained Lexus.

SPRING, Texas -- Verna McClain told her fiance she had given birth to their child. But after she suffered a miscarriage, authorities said, she went looking for another baby to present to him.

Now she's accused of killing a young mother to take one by force.

Investigators say McClain waited outside a pediatrician's office north of Houston and shot Kala Golden before taking her tiny newborn son, who was only 3 days old.

Little Keegan Golden was found unharmed hours later with McClain's sister – who was told that her sister planned to adopt the boy. He is back with family members.

McClain is charged with capital murder and was being held Wednesday without bond. Authorities say she admitted attacking the woman Tuesday and stealing her baby from his mother's pickup truck.

McClain, 30, who listed a Houston address, was separated from her husband, with whom she had raised three children.

"I don't understand that, her taking a child," her estranged husband, Theo McClain of San Diego, told The Associated Press. "That doesn't make sense. We have three kids. And then to shoot somebody? I've never known her to hurt anybody."

McClain had told her fiance she had given birth to their child. Instead, McClain had miscarried, said Capt. Bruce Zenor of the Montgomery County sheriff's office.

Her fiancé, who was not identified Wednesday, is being interviewed by authorities.

Sheriff Tommy Gage said 28-year-old Kala Golden had placed Keegan into her pickup truck Tuesday afternoon after leaving Northwoods Pediatric Center in Spring, about 20 miles north of Houston. The suspected shooter was parked next to her, Gage said.

The woman repeatedly shot Golden, then snatched the child from her truck and drove away, according to witness accounts. The dying woman leaned into the vehicle and tried to take the boy back, screaming, "My baby!" but her attacker sped off.

Later Tuesday, two detectives spotted a vehicle outside a nearby apartment complex that matched witnesses' descriptions, Gage said. Though McClain's apartment was empty, she showed up and talked to authorities.

During an interview, detectives learned of a residence in Harris County where McClain's sister lives and the child might be, Gage said.

McClain's sister, Corina Jackson, told authorities that she had talked about needing to "do the adoption" soon after taking Keegan.

McClain was later arrested. Police say she admitted carrying out the attack. They do not believe anyone else was involved.

Investigators said McClain's statements included information only the shooter would know and indicated Tuesday's attack was part of a wider plan to kidnap any child. Golden was simply a convenient target, authorities said.

McClain's children are with a family member in the county, authorities said.

The kidnapped baby has been returned to his family, according to his father, Keith Schuchardt, who said he had been married to Kala Golden for three years.

He told the Houston Chronicle that he learned of the shooting because as Golden lay dying, she asked another woman to call him and explain the attack.

Asked by reporters what he would tell his wife now, Schuchardt said, "I wish you were here with me to get me through this."

Schuchardt, who also has a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, said officials were initially concerned about his criminal record, which includes felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance and burglary of a coin-operated machine.

Gwen Carter, a spokeswoman for Texas' Department of Family and Protective Services, said Schuchardt could see his children as often as he wanted while authorities worked on the case.

McClain is a vocational nurse at a local staffing agency, a job that involves providing basic nursing services under the direction of registered nurses and doctors. She does not work at the pediatric center, according to a clinic receptionist, Jackie Longoria.

McClain, who has vocational nursing licenses in both California and Texas, has not faced disciplinary action in either state, according to licensing boards.

Golden's mother, Linda Golden, told the AP that she had been baby-sitting when someone at the scene called her using her daughter's cellphone. She rushed to the clinic but was unable to see her daughter because paramedics were trying to save her.

"I wanted to kiss her before they put her in the ambulance," Linda Golden said.

Linda Golden said she had no idea what could have sparked the slaying and abduction.

"That's the hardest she's ever fought," she said. "She died trying to save her baby."

Wow! Most of these comments aren't even point adjacent. The only relevance race plays in this scenario, is that a miscarriage can throw a woman completely off their nut.
People say the most insensitive things to women recovering from such a loss.
I lost a child while in active duty while my ex was out to sea. No counseling or bereavement assistance was offered. They even gave me flak when I needed ti see a priest! We tried again successfully and I took the baby by the base to visit friends and made sure they kept Petty Officer Mysogeny far from me. He wasn't killing THIS one! Millions of women can relate...especially those working in a male dominated field. They really hate it when a woman can still be as productive while in a "delicate condition" . I can think of at least three comments that would have sent an unstable woman over the edge. Note: I will not engage irrelevant, or heartless discussion on this issue. After 22 years, it still breaks my heart. I know my child would have been born to me regardless, but it's hardly irrelevant. Miscarriages are hard enough without some selfish, quasi-humanoid making light of it.

Don't tell me that you have balanced reporting or fairness of any kind. The killer was black and the dead mother was white. Isn't this a hate crime? Or is that only white on black or hispanic on black? All of you race mongers and your media cohorts have absolutely no concept of fairness or fair play. The media is totally reposible for our color based society.

countryqueen - You haven't responded to this question, "Have you ever seen another murder story about one race on another where it did not tell you the races of the persons?"

yes? no?

"Investigators said McClain's statements included information only the shooter would know and indicated Tuesday's attack was part of a wider plan to kidnap any child. Golden was simply a convenient target, authorities said."

I stress the PLAN TO KIDNAP ANY CHILD part and the GOLDEN WAS A CONVENIENT TARGET part.

I'm not trying to justify this crime by any means. It is one of the most upsetting stories I have ever read. My best friend just gave birth to a baby boy two weeks ago and I can't even begin to tell you how upset I would be if something like this had happened to her. I am simply trying to point out that this is in no way shape or form a hate crime. It was simply, and unfortunatley a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time for poor Kala Golden.

HuffPost - Isn't it interesting HuffPost managed to write the headline and the WHOLE story without pointing out that the mother was white and the shooter/kidnapper was black??
05:39 PM on 04/21/2012
That's probably because the race of the people involved is completely irrelevant,

countryqueen - Have you ever seen another murder story about one race on another whether it did not tell you the races of the persons? The answer is no. It did not say the race of the shooter because it's such a volatile issue and HuffPost is have an orgy with the Zimmerman/Martin story...where "the race of the people involved is completely irrelevant"

drudriver - Maybe they deleted it because you dared to suggest there should be a White Voices page. I have said the same in the past. I truly have nothing against black people but I am SO weary of every word we say being branded racist...... If there is a Black Voices page - there should be a White/Yellow and Red voices pages.

Why is there no outrage and anger for Kala Golden's murder? If this had been a white women killing a black women it would have Jesse and Al on the first plane to Terxas with the Streets filled with people demanding justice..

Oneman, the President only panders to the black voters or to try and convince women that the GOP doesn't care about their issues. He is a racist in my opinion, even tho he was raised by his white grandparents and abandonded by his black father.

This woman committed this horrendous act in Texas so her future is not bright as snow.

As for color, I don't want to be insensitive or mean, but the political correctness of HP is ridiculous. I was curious as to the absence of a photo of the murderer, so I googled a photo of her.

HP stop worrying about the racists. Just report the news and give us ALL the facts, including photos of the protagonists in this story. Let your readers decide!!!

Yeah Yank, I agree. And HP, don't have the headline misleadingly say: Nurse admits SHOOTING..., instead say what is actually correct: Nurse admits KILLING... Shooting means little, a shot in the toe maybe, "killing" means dead which is more accurate. And why not even say: Black Woman Kills White Woman: Steals Her Baby. The Liberal press is ridiculously one-sided in their presentations of stories. Oh. With this particular murder I expect Al Sharptom to picket for the dead white mother at any second. And maybe Jesse Jackson too and perhaps Oprah will weigh in and a famous black entertainer will release the address of the black murderer.

Hmm, are you sure it was a white baby the black woman stole? That would really surprize me.

What this woman, Verna McClain, has done is cold blooded murder.
To kill a mother and steal her newborn child---
On top of that, she already has three kids of her own.

Plus, she is a nurse, which is a profession of helping people.

Any charge other than 1st degree murder, would be a surprising injustice.

better yet felony murder cuz if the jury finds her not guilty (FAT CHANCE) of one and guilty of the other she still gets life cuz they are both Capital felonies

She was in court today shaking and mumbling. Her lawyers say they plan on entering a not guilty plea. Good luck with that. She planned and she executed her murder/kidnapping. She even confessed to it. She may be off her rocker, but the planning, will trip her up. I'm sure she didn't sit in the parking lot for a few seconds. She probably sat there for a while. Long enough to understand that what she was planning to do was wrong.

They enter the not guilty plea because they want it to go to trial. Otherwise it would not. She stands a chance of life in prison if the jury feels sympathy for her. I don't. I hope she gets the death penalty and it is swift.

sounds like she's mentally ill. why would a black woman steal a white baby and try to pass it off as her's? that doesn't make any sense. it would be so obvious. there's more to this story.
06:24 PM on 04/19/2012
How did this become a mad rush to the mental illness theory? She hasnt even been examined by mental health pros yet. Read the tea leaves, this was pre_meditated, calculaded, cold blooded murder. Shot 6 times then hit by the car. Get a clue (some) people.

The defense can say whatever it wants about her mental condition. Obviously this woman was not in her right mind, but insane? She knew enough to take a gun with her, how is that not premeditated? But anyway, lawyers are charged with representing their clients zealously. Of course the defense will try to plant the seed in the potential jury pool that their client is mentally ill.
05:30 PM on 04/19/2012
mental illness and guns are a bad mix. it's a lot easier to get a gun the treatment for mental illness. thank you NRA and GOP.

That has nothing to do with it. The NRA and GOP have nothing to do with this problem. Nothing. You can get a gun anywhere. How about complaining about the fact that the gun laws we already have are substantial enough, but they are not enforced?

Mental illness and knives are a bad mix too, so is mental illness and belts, spoons, skate boards, bubble gum... which, any one of these things and much more kills if done in the right way so, do not make the gun the bad, evil tool!! Guns protect the innocent from rapists, murderers, thieves . . . Take the guns away, and it's happy, happy time for all illegal crimes. At least with a gun we have a 50/50 chance!

Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson's Stance were Enacted back in 1964 by Martin Luther King!
