WASHINGTON -- Two NASA space shuttles, Discovery and Enterprise, crossed paths in a historic exchange at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., on Thursday morning.

Discovery, which arrived at Dulles International Airport from Florida on Wednesday after flying low over the nation's capital, is taking the place of Enterprise at the Smithsonian aerospace center near Dulles, as Enterprise begins its journey to New York City.

That craft's final destination will be the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

As WRC-TV/NBC4 reported, previous Discovery commanders were expected to be at the Udvar-Hazy Center for Discovery's arrival, along with more than 8,000 people.

Enterprise will leave Dulles on Monday and fly to John F. Kennedy International Airport, where it will later be transported by barge to the Intrepid museum, which sits adjacent to the Hudson River.
