IKEA And Costco Food Courts Lure Frugal Customers (PHOTOS)

The economy may be on the rebound, but plenty of Americans are still looking to save a few bucks wherever they can -- and for some that means eating at the food courts of places like Costco and IKEA.

An interesting piece by CNBC notes that Costco rakes in modest profits from more than 300 million food court items a year at its nearly 600 warehouses. (Only six lack food courts.)

That probably has something to do with its incredibly low price point:

Costco members can chow down on a quarter-pound hot dog and guzzle a 20-oz. fountain soda with free refills for just $1.50 -- the same price since it first appeared on the menu in 1985. For $1.99, they have their choice of cheese, pepperoni, or a combination pizza slice. The ever-popular chicken bake costs $2.99, and a hot turkey and provolone sandwich or a chicken Caesar salad is $3.99.

IKEA, too, has cheap offerings, like its popular Swedish meatball plate for $3.99. The place has a devoted legion of fans who have fallen for more than just the food: Earlier this week, a Maryland couple tied the knot at the College Park IKEA just outside Washington, D.C. And yes, there were meatballs.

I haven't tried everything on the list, but I'll admit to sampling most of the items. Nothing qualifies for a "worst" in my book, taste, convenience, or price-wise. I loved taking my grandmother to Ikea for breakfast - all the things she liked for about the price of a candy bar.

If there's a "worst" at all, it's the description of the Costco hot dog and soda combo. Where is the threshold between simply drinking and "guzzling?" I don't think anyone would call a cup of Ikea's coffee and two refills "guzzling," even though the fluid volume trumps that 20 ounce soda.

I don't go to Costco, but whenever I have to go to Ikea (like twice a year), I always grab lunch there. I am also impressed with their breakfast, for 99 cents, it's pretty tasty.

i tried to pay for noodles with my meatballs at ikea and was denied, even though they were right there next to them.

I'll take Swedish meatballs any way I can get them. IKEA's aren't that good compared to real Swedish meatballs served by Swedish cooks in Sweden. Over there the equivalent stores to our Wal-Mart and Target have cafeterias, and even their meatballs are better. I ate some Swedish meatballs at a restaurant in Lindsborg, KS that were so good they brought tears to my eyes.

Love the Supreme pizza that Costco sells over the counter. It's made right in the store. They used to sell Supreme pizza take-and-bake style, but no longer. How come? I love Costco, but with so many things they get you hooked on them, then yank them. I would even pay more to get good take-home pizza, good cinnamon rolls, ANY other pie besides apple, and whatever happened to their Tangerine Beef?? Food of the Gods.

2 years ago I was in Malmo, Sweden. Stopped at the local IKEA (1st time in one) and had the Swedish meatball dinner. Thought it was pretty good and cheap, The Swedes packed the cafeteria area with most restaurants in Malmo being very expensive.
Curious, we have an IKEA here in Atlanta, always considered going to see if the Swedish meatballs are just as good.

do you realize how dumb you sound saying "IKEA's aren't that good compared to real Swedish meatballs served by Swedish cooks in Sweden."

Try Costco's ice cream bar . While we are talking Costco , they used to carry nonalcoholic beer (You who don't like this SHUT UP there 's plenty of good stuff for you!) NA beer is 1/3 the calories of soda, thirst quenching and possibly healthier than any soda pop. They had O'douls (dish water I know) It's drinkable and at $11 foe 24 cans . Can we start a campaign to bring NA beer back. I prefer Sharps over O'douls start putting requests in the suggestion box( please) I like beer but alcohol doesn't agree with me

Problem with Costco food is the insane calorie counts on those things. The frozen yogurt isn't so bad, at about 300 calories for a huge 16 oz cup, but that pizza... Nearly 800 calories a slice. Think about that. Nearly half the daily calories from one lousy slice of pizza. Same goes for those chicken and carne asada bakes.

Ikea, just by virtue of smaller portions and offering vegetables, is the healthier choice.

When I'm shopping at Costco with my kids, we get 1 slice of their cheese pizza, and split it in half. I can't imagine that a similar pizza anywhere else would have fewer calories. I usually get the hot dog combo and we share the soda. Grand total for a fast-food lunch for 3: $3.50. Between that and the ridiculous number of samples around the store, it's a lot better than just about any fast-food alternative. Now, if I can just get them to bring back those veggie chips they sold around the holidays...

Costco makes the best pizza. Always get my take-out pizza from them.

The only one that looks edible is the Ikea smoked salmon! That said, when I visit Ikea I have an immediate panic attack about the allen wrench assembly. It's a love hate thing.

Maybe it's a Midwestern thing, but a lot of the supermarkets here (I'm in Kansas City) have food service, too. They have salad bars, but also hot food items, which usually are different daily, and are very inexpensive. Some of the markets have gotten very popular (especially with senior citizens) who eat there regularly. They have weekend breakfast buffets and things like "steak night." Obviously they're not serving USDA Prime then, but a lot of people swear by the markets and the price is right!

I love the Hy Vee in Lee's Summit, MO. lived there for 6 months. ordered Chinese food on a regular basis. MN doesn't have that unless it is a high end grocery store.

I'm on WW but every once in a while I splurge and get the hot dog at Costco. It's yummy with sauerkraut and they have the spicy mustard. The kids love Costco too, so it's easy and cheap to go on a Saturday for lunch and shopping (well not the shopping part). We also enjoy the samples, and I never leave w/o a rotisserie chicken - at $5 it's cheaper than buying a chicken and having to cook it myself.

Cuz its cheap and decent enough for the price. Nobody is claiming that they have the best food on the planet. Haven't you been paying attention?
