Madonna On Her Parenting Skills: 'I Need To Be A Tougher Mom'

Madonna: 'I Need To Be A Tougher Mom'

Madonna, the self-proclaimed mother of reinvention says there are a few people who only get to know one version of her personality -- her kids. Last night, the superstar, who also happens to be a single mother of four, told Rock Center's Harry Smith that she's like any other mom who asks "have you done your homework?" and "why are you wearing that?" And though she's strident, the singer says honestly, "I think I need to be tougher."

Recently, Madge's 15-year-old daughter, Lourdes, was photographed smoking a cigarette. There was speculation that she picked the habit up from mom, Madonna confirms, "she didn't get that from me." She told Smith that she was not very happy when that photograph surfaced. "I don't approve of anyone smoking, especially my daughter," she said.

As for whether it's hard to be Madonna, she says her life is a "metaphorical fish bowl." It's challenging, she says, but she's survived so far.
