Apple: Ireland Headquarters To Add 500 New Jobs

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Apple is to hire 500 people in Ireland in the latest boost to the indebted euro zone country's multinational sector, one of the few bright spots in a struggling economy.

The consumer electronics giant will increase the headcount at its European headquarters in the southern city of Cork over the next 18 months from 2,800 at present, a spokesman for the company said.

He said the jobs would "support our growing business across Europe," but he did not say what kind of jobs would be created. The Cork operation provides distribution, supply chain management and back office functions.

Bailed out by the EU/IMF in late 2010 and midway through a punishing eight-year austerity drive, Ireland has an unemployment rate of 14.3 percent, its highest since 1993 and more than three times the level of 2007.

While workers are still being laid off as consumer spending continues to shrink, Dublin has succeeded in attracting Google and Facebook thanks to its low corporate tax rates and educated, English-speaking workforce within the eurozone.

Generics drug maker Mylan on Wednesday announced it would hire 500 people in Ireland.

Big headline news Apple adds 500 jobs in IRELAND !!!
Zero jobs in America !!!
How much money$ have Apple made in America vs IRELAND ???

Why people keep buying for companies that sold out on US instead of supporting companies that help with American job market?

I am proud not owning anything that Apple make.

It would be nice if Apple moved some of the jobs making Apple products back to America.

Foxconn employs over a million people in China. Seems like some of those jobs could be moved back to the US.

Companies move abroad because we are now the #1 country in the world for coprorate taxation. The feds talk making jobs...so simple: REDUCE taxes on these companies. Dems want to tax EVERYONE...tax, tax, tax. It backfires, but no one in Washington seems to be bright enough to see the consequences.

How much do they make vs. how much tax do Apple pay ?
Do they pay more than Romney$ paid in his tax rate for the 1%?
Apple 47,000 employees minus Apple CEO are probably paying the similar tax rate to Buffet secretary?

Apple is the symbol of Evil since the dawn of human history ... Read the old testament? :-)

no, they couldn't. Apple already employs many people in the US, but they will never make people like you happy.

Most Apple employees at those Apple stores are probably earning a little bit more than the McDonald counterparts eh?
I am a believer if Apple do pay those minimum wage of Apple some of the shares like they pay their executives.
OWS should start OAS (Occupy Apple Store) for prospering on sweat and blood of the poor - just look at those workers in China?

Google, Apple, Microosft, Amazon are all hiring in the US.

The most important statement was from a spokesman, the jobs would "support our growing business across Europe,". This is not an indictment of tax poclies ,etc. It is only logical to place a headquarters close to where your markets is. Ford is going to building a factory in China because thats where it's market growth will be.

Apple is not unique. The major corporations have been adding hundreds of thousands of jobs in other countries over the Obama years. They do not want a recovery. They will do anything to make him look bad even if it destroys America. Apple has most of their manufacturing overseas. They are unAmerican and should be considered as traitors. We call them global but they are really just crooks getting their procducts made for pennies while Americans go broke and loose their homes. These people need to go to jail. Companies like Apple are the motor driving the taking of America. This must stop. Remember the Republicans are the enforcement arm of the unAmerican war against the middle class. Vote them all out- all of them.If you don't do it NOW it will be too late.

Apple executives are mostly democrat supporters. Even Steve Jobs was a big liberal. That is how Big liberals operate. They say they are for the little guy, but they are really 1%ers who like to fool the public.

Isn't that the whole premise behind liberalism though? Words speak louder than action.

Probably the opening salvo of a massive publicity campaign to repair damage done by the previous labour issues. It's not like they can't afford to blow a few hundred million.

And, suren, those Irish little tykes will be puttin together those phones just as fast as their little fingers can fly...
Yes, in Ireland right now, it's either the Potatoe Famine or the I-cr*p Plant...

That would be a great company to work for.
12:52 AM on 04/21/2012
It is a total oxymoron to call Apple a great company. You really want America as a slave labor state? The republicans are killing the middle class. The republicans love the profits they are reaping in Japan and the rest of the world. Stock holders are loving that 38 cents an hour over there. So much for America. The greed of the corporations has nearly killed us.

Boycott Apple products! With billions in cash, they can afford to think about Americans who need jobs. Stop supporting a company who doesn't care about you.

Yeah, to hell with the 47,000 people they employ, eh?

LOL. I have to admit it was a knee-jerk reaction after reading about hotel-dwellers. Stll, there should be pressure by consumers to let Apple know that Americans expect them to put people before profits.

As a company who flourished in America, it is like a super wealthy child who abandons his parents in a time of need when Apple, holding billions of dollars, intentionally steer jobs away from America to gain greater profit.

Apple employs a great many Americans. How many jobs have you created?
10:56 PM on 04/20/2012
"How many jobs have you created?"... none, my daddy was a retired electrician, and he didn't leave me millions to "create jobs" and then send the work to China and the money to the Caymans.

My point is that this is a global economy, and American workers aren't allowed to participate in it. It's highly discriminatory.

Good for them! Better to get an Irish National on the phone for Apple tech support instead of a fast-talking Indie from Bangalore who reads from a prepared script in broken English an you still can't understand a thing he/she blabbers into their microphone. Happens to us with Verizon all the time. You call Verizon and you get an earfull of Bangalorese jibberish.

A revolution is long overdue.

And here was I hoping those jobs were created in the US. They probably do that so that they can claim to have their headquarters in Ireland where they only pay 4% in corporate income taxes as opposed to 30% in the US. Google does it, too.
