Is Brandon McCarthy the latest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community ally?

The famed Oakland A's pitcher has spoken out against operators of the stadium "kiss cam" phenomenon who hope to generate laughs from the crowd by featuring (presumably straight) same-sex pairs and prompting them to smooch.

As NBC Sports is reporting, McCarthy expressed his thoughts on Twitter, going so far as to condemn the "kiss cam" trend as "sh*tty comedy" and noting how the practice was particularly "offensive to gay males."

Brandon McCarthy
They put two guys on the 'Kiss Cam' tonight. What hilarity!! (by hilarity I mean offensive homophobia). Enough with this stupid trend.

He encountered a fair amount of resistance to his thoughts among his followers, but then noted:

Brandon McCarthy
so what? I know that isn't the intention, but the implication is that two guys kissing is funny. That's offensive to gay males.

When one user asked whether it was possibly "a genuine cameraman just being fair and equal," McCarthy replied:

Brandon McCarthy
it was two of our players to start. But, you also may have a point there.

Brandon McCarthy
so that's why they should stop doing it. Plus, it's cheap shitty comedy so it sucks on that level as well.

Way to go, Brandon!

Take a look at some openly LGBT sports figures below:

Gareth Thomas

Thomas's decision to confirm his sexuality while still an active rugby player was praised by LGBT rights advocates as a brave move. Though others have since followed suit, Thomas hoped people who eventually consider his sexuality as irrelevant. "What I choose to do when I close the door at home has nothing to do with what I have achieved in rugby," he told The Guardian. "I'd love for it, in 10 years' time, not to even be an issue in sport, and for people to say: 'So what?'"
