Cute, but, getting your dog high is probably not such a good idea. Though it depends on the dog. I once had a 100 lb. rescued mutt whose previous owners had clearly been getting him high, because the second he smelled pot smoke, he'd trot over and position himself in the cloud of smoke. And then he'd get really goofy and relaxed.

On the other hand, one of my current dogs, a pit mix, passed through a cloud during a party and had a really bad reaction, she got shaky and nervous, really didn't like it, I felt bad that happened. So now our place has a strict "no smoking around the dogs" rule.

Yes, but the photos of stoned-looking dogs lend themselves to this ancillary topic. Your point?

"D", back in the 'ol days, waited my whole life to say that, haha., anyway, had some friends who had a cat that when the pot started around the circle, I noticed a brown paper bag by the owner, the cat would crawl in the bag and wait his turn, smoke went in, soon, out came the cat, stoned, he would go to the window sill ,sit and dream away the afternoon.

I am a Licensed Clinical Drug and Alcohol Counselor and have been working in the field of addictions for 36 years. Currently I work at a county correctional facility in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Despite all the happy talk about marijuana there is a very real downside associated with this drug. New evidence about THC indicates it moves up the onset of Bipolar Disorder by two years. Studies show 40% of the people arrested for driving while intoxicated test positive for THC. This translates into thousands of people killed and injured every year. Both alcohol and marijuana reduce inhibitions and impair judgment. This makes then factors in both property and violent crimes. Further, when parents are addicted they neglect and abuse their children. Most of the men and women I see come from highly dysfunctional families. They go on to damage their children in the same ways. Justifying legalization of marijuana by saying it is no worse the alcohol is false logic. Alcohol is an extremely dangerous drug. Alcohol is a known carcinogenic which damages every organ system in the human body. Why not compare it to arsenic, after all arsenic was used as a treatment of parasites and the treatment of syphilis before penicillin.

What you say illustrates why so many discount such talk as propaganda along the lines of Reefer Madness.

1. If arrested for driving intoxicated, this means alcohol's involved. Yes, ALCOHOL is responsible for "thousands of people killed and injured."

2. There are NO links in any studies connecting pot to property and violent crimes. If you think so, please provide links. (Pot DECREASES violent tendencies.)

3. Pot is NOT physically addictive. (Like many substances, it can be psychologically addictive only; big difference.)

4. Intergenerational dysfunction and abuse has its own driving mechanisms, again NOT pot related.

5. Pot "no worse than alcohol"? Hardly. Alcohol is a significantly dangerous drug, something nobody disputes. The same can NOT be said of pot. (Unlike alcohol, it's not physically addictive and can't be overdosed on.)

Your response is so full of holes I don't know where to start. But here goes.
French researchers studied all drivers involved in fatal car crashes over a two-year period and found 7% tested positive for marijuana, including nearly 3% who tested positive for a combination of marijuana and alcohol.
Although marijuana's share of fatal crashes is much lower than those attributed to alcohol, researchers say the results show that marijuana use, even in low doses, significantly increases the risk of fatal car accidents.
If you need to understand the way drugs work in the brain Google Neuroanatomy and Physiology of the “Brain Reward System”in Substance Abuse. Wonderful article complete with pictures, diagrams, illustrations.
Addiction is a family disease it always has been. Emotional growth stops when people become addicted. Everyday I see men and women who became addicted in their early teens. Well before their brains were fully developed. Try to remember what its like to be 14. How good was your judgment, impulse control, ability to manage a checkbook and a job at 14. Now imagine your 22 with the skills and abilities of a 14 year old. Do you think your going to be a good parent and provider. I think the answer to that question is pretty obvious.
As to your 5th point please read the articles in the Journal of Addictions, The Journal of Addictions Counseling, Take some good graduate level courses. Contact NAADAC for Approved Drug Counseling Courses. Learn!

This guy represents the falacy group, Gail, and nothing, nothing will ever change his mind. I have smoked pot for over 45 years, not every day but close, never felt the need to "move up" to stronger stuff. Basically stopped drinking when I found pot. What is the statistic of alcohol related accidents and home violence against women and kids because of it. I know it is high. this guy is a relic of distortion!

I'm not sure of what your calling phony. If you have questions about the effects of marijuana or other illicit drugs there are whole libraries devoted to this subject. I don't pretend to be the worlds leading authority. There are researchers, scientist, doctors and people in fine organizations like N.A, and A.A. who know far more then me. I've been working to help people for my entire professional life. Underestimating the power of any drug or the disease of addiction is a dangerous mistake.

I have prescription eyedrops that I use for glaucoma. I once asked my ophthalmologist: "They say marijuana is good for glaucoma. Is that true?" His answer, "Better than anything I can give you."

But still it is illegal. Do you think the pharmaceutical industry has anything to do with this?

No. The pharmaceutical industry supports marijuana legalization. If they were allowed to use whole cannabis, they could introduce a whole new array of profitable medications that were cheap to produce.

The pharmaceutical industry does not spend money in opposition to legalization measures.

Law Enforcement is the problem. They are the ones aggressively lobbying for prohibition.

Thank you for the info about the drug companies.

So far as law enforcement goes, their position varies greatly from one jurisdiction to another and from one level of government to another. What is certainly true is that the law enforcement agencies specifically charged with enforcing the drug laws are generally opposed to any legalization attempts. It is called institutional survival.

Having taught at a criminal justice college for over thirty years, I do know that individual law enforcement officers vary in their views. For the most part, though, seem to be in agreement that the "war on drugs" is a failure and that far too many people are incarcerated far too long for relatively minor drug offenses. (I live in New York - our drug laws are draconian.)

I had a dog who got high on the pot smoke coming up through the heat register from my downstairs neighbors' apartment. She was pretty funny - it never hurt her, probably because it was occasional and diluted.

this is almost certainly 'physically impossible'. even if your dog weighed 8 pounds, you would have to put them in a small box and fill the box with smoke - and even then it would take some repeated fillings.

smoke dissipates readily into air - air moving through ducts or up through cracks is likely to have just a few parts per million active ingredients.

contact highs, hot boxing, etc... it is all a myth... sorry to dispel any closely held misconceptions.

Whatever.

''and in one movie theater recently I found I could get high just by inhaling the cannabis smoke which permeated the theater.

There is a very nice self-titering aspect to cannabis. Each puff is a very small dose; the time lag between inhaling a puff and sensing it's effect is small; and there is no desire for more after the high is there. When cannabis is legalized. . I hope that time isn’t too distant; the illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world." ~Carl Sagan
