FDA: Gulf Seafood Safe Despite Oil Spill Concerns

WASHINGTON (AP) — Photos of fish with sores may raise concern about long-term environmental effects of the massive BP oil spill — but federal health officials say the Gulf seafood that's on the market is safe to eat.

After all, diseased fish aren't allowed to be sold, said Dr. Robert W. Dickey, who heads the Food and Drug Administration's Gulf Coast Seafood Laboratory.

"It's important to emphasize that we're talking about a low percentage of fish," Dickey stressed. "It doesn't represent a seafood safety hazard."

Two years after the oil spill, scientists cite lesions and other deformities in some Gulf fish as a sign of lingering environmental damage. They can't say for sure what's causing the fish ailments or if there really are more sick fish today than in the past.

As marine biologists study the threats to the fish, here are some questions and answers about the safety of seafood:

Q: What keeps sick fish off the market?

A: Every wholesaler and seafood processor must follow longstanding FDA rules on what constitutes a safe and usable catch. Fish with lesions or signs of parasites or other disease aren't allowed, Dickey said.

Q: What about oil contamination that's not visible?

A: Federal and state laboratories tested more than 10,000 fish, shrimp and other animals for traces of certain chemicals in oil to be sure they were far below levels that could make anyone sick before commercial fishing ever was allowed to resume. Gulf Coast states are continuing that testing today as a precaution. Some species clear oil contaminants from their bodies more rapidly than others, the reason that fishing resumed before the oyster harvest. The FDA says that someone could eat 9 pounds of fish or 5 pounds of oyster meat a day for five years and still not reach the levels of concern for a key set of chemicals.

Q: But what about the oil compounds that scientists have reported finding in the bile of some fish?

A: Bile shows what a fish recently ate, but the fish's digestive system goes on to process and eliminate contaminants so they don't build up in edible tissue, Dickey said.

Q: Are there other reasons to pay attention to seafood safety?

A: Definitely. A California company recently recalled some yellowfin tuna used to make sushi because it was linked to an outbreak of salmonella food poisoning. And every year, health officials warn people with certain health conditions to avoid eating raw oysters — they may be contaminated with the Vibrio vulnificus bacteria that typically is found in warm coastal waters between April and October.

Does Obama really care about the health of his people, or is he just working to poison and weaken them to prevent the possibility of any reaction by them against Israel, when sufficient people see the film '911missinglinks' and come to understand clearly that Israel did 9/11, and that America just trashed three whole countries for nothing, except to fulfill the desire of Israel to kill all Arabs.

How many people know that Obama has stopped importation of seafood by much of the US military, and has insisted they all eat Gulf seafood instead, to 'instil confidence' in the quality of Gulf seafood, to benefit the ailing fishing industry, just like they stopped the rescue workers on 9/11, witnesses to what really happened, from wearing respiratory gear that would have kept them alive, to 'instil confidence' that the air in that vicinity was safe for all to breath that day.

Obama has been spraying the most lethal toxin in the Gulf area that he could possibly find; he means to poison the Gulf and everybody around it. Completely non-toxic alternatives were available to mop up the oil from the very beginning, and still Obama carries on spraying mutagenic and carcinogenic corexit all over the Gulf area to damage the DNA of all creatures there for all time to come.

How long would it take a sane man to ban not just shrimp, but all seafood from that area, and to ban the spraying of corexit too?

Sure I would believe "everything" the FDA says, might as well listen to Monsanto. That agency is truly a joke.

FYI,
there is no consistent data to indicate that BPA is truly that harmful. Sure, there may be some small increased risk, but enough to warrant its elimination? Doubtful. Lets focus on pollution, and things that increase our stress than this nonsense. For goodness sake, people would be much better off eating this fish than the fast food they put in their system

Didn't they also claim the Alaskan marine mammals showing fur loss and oozing sores (symptoms of radiation poisoning) 'had nothing to do with Fukushima', ...and keep eating that frozen AK cod & pollock!! Isn't frozen AK fish the key ingredient in every fast-food fish sandwich? Oh, now I get it~!

I think the FDA is full of it. And, Jack, you've got it right -- they didn't ban BPA. I don't trust them either!

Sorry FDA, not going to take any chances. Especially after you refused to ban BPA. I don't trust you any more.

Great point! I guess while we were all talking about "pink slime" that one slipped by. Gross negligence on the part of the FDA! I wonder how many of them get money from outside interest?

http://www.democracynow.org/ - watch the April 20, 2012 show. If you think Obama is a better president than Bush, more liberal, more left, more progressive (as in, progress and improvement), then you are sorely mistaken, and you should now that I did not vote for Bush, and think Bush was a horrible president.

I voted for Obama in 2008 and I wish I was wrong about this, and I look forward to the possibility of you or anyone else proving me wrong about it, but so far that's not happened.

Under Obama, you have no rights... but he won't throw you in jail forever without a trial. After all, you're voting for him, right?
10:48 AM on 04/20/2012
Well, there you have it. If the FDA says it's safe, then you know that it's safe. Second to big pharma, they are the most trustworthy entity.
10:41 AM on 04/20/2012
Safe? I'll believe it when I see those same FDA officials show up, fish in the gulf, take the seafood home and feed it to their families.

The federal health officials are politicians who are trying to protect a huge industry down in the gulf at the expense of making my children and your's sick that if you allow them to eat fish out of the gulf of Mexico.

Mostly because they do not want to compel BP to truly pay these people for their loss of business while the Gulf recovers.
