Trayvon Martin Case: Judge Grants George Zimmerman Bail

A Florida judge has granted bail for George Zimmerman, the Florida neighborhood watch captain accused of second-degree murder in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester set Zimmerman's bond at $150,000, but said he would not be released today, pending deliberations about the terms of the release.

The bail hearing featured dramatic testimony from Zimmerman, who took the stand and offered an apology to Martin's parents.

"I wanted to say that I am sorry for the loss of your son," Zimmerman said, adding that he did not know how old Martin was or that he was unarmed.

"I thought he was a little bit younger than I am," he said. "I did not know whether he was armed or not."

Assistant prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda requested that the judge set no bail or require a bond of $1 million, arguing that Zimmerman's past history of violence and the evidence against him in the shooting of Martin made him a threat to the public.

"Our position is that he will still be a danger to the community," De La Rionda said.

Mark O'Mara, Zimmerman's attorney, asked for bail of just $15,000 and requested that Zimmerman be allowed to leave the state while on bond.

Judge Lester ordered O'Mara to confer with state prosecutors and the Seminole County Sheriff's Department on the terms of Zimmerman's confinement, and to request an additional ruling if an agreement could not be met.

No date has been set for Zimmerman's trial, but the bail hearing provided a brief preview of the fierce legal battle likely to unfold once the case goes before a Florida jury.

O'Mara used the bail hearing to grill the state's lead investigator on the case over the evidence supporting a probable cause affidavit used to charge Zimmerman with second-degree murder.

Under questioning from O'Mara, Dale Gilbreath, the investigator, testified that the state did not have evidence indicating "who threw the first blow" in the confrontation that led to Martin's death.

Gilbreath also confirmed that Zimmerman had two lacerations on the back of his head. A picture purportedly showing blood running down the back of Zimmerman's head was published by ABC News this morning.

But Gilbreath also described previously undisclosed evidence the state plans to present at Zimmerman's trial, while under questioning from Rionda, the assistant prosecutor.

Gilbreath testified that Zimmerman repeatedly contradicted himself while being interviewed by police and provided statements inconsistent with physical evidence and witness recollections.

Prosecutors have also located a witness near the site of the shooting who described seeing the shadows of two men pass by her home, one chasing the other, immediately before Martin was killed. The pursuit, in the direction of Martin's home, indicates that Zimmerman initiated the confrontation, Gilbreath said, under questioning from Rionda.

Zimmerman's mother, father and wife testified by phone at the hearing, describing Zimmerman as a non-violent man who was not a threat to the community.

"I've never known him to be violent at all, unless he was provoked, and then he would turn the other cheek," said Robert Zimmerman, his father.

All three family members said they had no idea how much money had been raised by a website established by George Zimmerman to collect donations to aid his defense. Zimmerman's parents said they did not have much income, but pledged their home as security for their son's bond.

The hearing came to a close with the appearance of George Zimmerman on the stand. Wearing a gray suit and silver tie, with his hands shackled, Zimmerman offered an apology to Martin's family, who were sitting in the courtroom.

An attorney for Martin's family told reporters that the apology was "self-serving."

Zimmerman was briefly cross-examined by Rionda, the assistant prosecutor, but the judge did not permit him to question Zimmerman about the night Martin was shot.

Rionda asked Zimmerman if he had changed his story to police "as it went along."

"Absolutely not," Zimmerman said.

Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Martin's family, told The Huffington Post that Zimmerman's in-court apology was too little too late, and the family see it as a ploy for sympathy.

"They feel it was just so self-serving, that it was one of those things that was not sincere," he said. "We can only guess that his motive was to get sympathy. It's 50 days later at his bond hearing, and for the first time he's saying, 'I'm sorry for killing Trayvon.'"

The attorney noted that Zimmerman had launched a website in recent weeks on which he thanks his supporters and posts photos of signs and graffiti that read "Long Live Zimmerman," but made no mention of an apology or expressed sympathy for Martin's family.

As for the judge granting Zimmerman a $150,000 bond, Crump said the family has no choice but to deal with it, though they had hoped it would be revoked.

"The family is devastated that the killer gets to get out of jail," Crump said. "They hope it's temporary, especially knowing that the damage that he caused them is permanent."

"Every accused person in America gets the right to have a bond hearing," Crump added. "The judge listened to both sides and we just have to live with it."

The money is starting to roll in for George now. $200K so far and more on the way. I guess there are more supporters out there than anyone knows. there is a hearing today, but I don't know what it is about. It looks to me so far that Angela Corey might have bitten off more than she can chew with a 2nd degree murder charge and we'll just have to wait and see what she has because no one knows what all the evidence is or what type evidence Mark O'Mara can present. Anything is possible in Florida.

the hearing was suppose to be about sealing of more documents, i believe. i do suspect it will stray into other areas at this point since zimmerman can no longer claim indigence. i do find it interest that brother robert was supposedly in charge of these paypal accounts and that was one person not testifying before the court regarding lack of financial resources. i wonder if george knew this dollar amount at the time of the bond hearing, if so, he obviously did not tell o'mara.

the lawyers i know will generally represent anyone capable of paying their retainer, but are not fond of information being withheld (not saying it was done, only possible). should be interest. as we have come to see, there has been absolutely nothing routine in this case.

Daniel Adkins was sh0t&K177ed on April 3,2012 during a heated argument while he was walking his dog.

Daniel Adkins, a mentally disabled Hispanic nearly got hit by a car while walking across the drive-thru at Taco Bell.

They got into an altercation and Adkins was shot once by the driver. He died at the scene.

The driver, a 22-year-old black male, called police but has not been arrested.

At first, the couple claimed that Adkins had a metal pipe that he swung at them -- but it turns out he was holding a dog leash with his yellow lab on the other end.

Family members want that driver arrested, but he's claiming self-defense.

"He needs to be behind bars. I'll never see my brother again," says sister Marina Reyes. "If he felt that my brother was threatening him, he could have easily just rolled up the window and called the cops."

A metal pipe or bat was never located. An independent witness did say Adkins swung his fists in the driver's direction.

“He swung his fist towards the driver window, and at some point the driver shot him,” says Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson. “Just because we don’t book a person immediately does not mean we don’t charge a person at a later date.”

The driver was released based on Arizona's Stand Your Ground Laws.

The driver/shooter in the Daniel Atkins murder should be charged. Daniel never attempted to enter the vehicle or remove anyone from the vehicle. And by the shooter's own admission, he did not so much as touch the shooter, his passenger, or even the vehicle. In fact, the shooter changed his story when questioned by police a second time and admitted he was not in fear for his life or for his passenger's life, according to police records.

This case completely blows a hole in the whole "if Zimmerman was black he would have been arrested on the spot" claim. Equally concerning, is the fact that the identity of the shooter is concealed unlike Zimmerman, whose name and likeness was widely reported/shown long before he was charged.

Zimmerman, being an obvious amateur unconcerned with safety and only concerned with playing Charles “I have a death wish” Bronson, could easily have had the pistol recoil into his face, lost his balance, and landed on his back in the wet grass. In addition, if Trayvon Martin would have been on top of Zimmerman, that means Trayvon Martin would have been found lying on his back as Zimmerman pushed him off, but Trayvon Martin wasn’t. Trayvon Martin was discovered by the police lying on his back per what was reported to the media by the policemen involved turning him over on his back at the crime seen, and trying to revive a body with no pulse. The above link is a photo of Zimmerman under arrest and exiting the police cruiser. Please save the photo to disk, enlarge and print if necessary. There is no evidence of any skull injury, lacerations, scrapings, blood, or scabbing over of any lacerations or scrapings on the occipital area. There is no evidence of that ludicrous photoshop job of the inverted triangle at the top right rear of the crown extending partially down in 45 degrees to make the point in the mid part of the occipital area.

At the link above is supposed to be the arrest report of George Zimmerman. I found it extremely odd that the height and weight of Trayvon Martin (6’ and 160 lbs), plus, the height and weight of several witnesses were listed. However, for George Zimmerman (5’9 and ?lbs) only the height was listed but not the weight. It’s easy to determine that Zimmerman had at least 60 pounds on Trayvon Martin, but only 3” in height difference.

First link: The CCTV video is not good enough to see if he has lacerations or not. Note that the license plate, which is closer to the camera and has large letters designed to be read at a distance is illegible.

Second link: The height and weight are estimates. With Martin laying on the ground, his height is more difficult to eyeball. There are reports from family and friends that Martin was about 6' 3" and 160 lbs and Zimmerman is 5' 8"-5' 9" and about 170-180 lbs. Earlier reports of Zimmerman's weight were 6 years out of date. Martin had about 6 inches on Zimmerman and was within about 20 lbs in weight.

Zimmerman lived. He couldn't fill in the blank of his own true height and weight? So did the witnesses live. Everyone else listed did but not Zimmerman. Thus, the myth of 6'2" or taller has been put to rest by the partial police report typed later from notes taken at the crime scene by the major crimes detectives.

Your post backfired on you. 160 lbs isn't proved either just as your posts said about it being difficult to estimate height and weight on deceased persons unable to give their own true information. A forensic team member would measure the height, and they are very good at weight estimates as well without actually weighing the body first.

Better find someone to cut you out of your self-woven web deception. Webs are very strong in psi, and some spider may come along, and find you'd be tasty morsel for many a current and future meal.

What Parker says happened next could make the fallout from the brutal beating even worse. As the attackers walked away, leaving Owen bleeding on the ground, Parker says one of them said "Now thats justice for Trayvon." Trayvon Martin is the unarmed teenager police say was shot and killed February 26 by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Samford, Florida.

An argument ensued and after Daniel swung a couple times toward the vehicle the driver shot and killed Daniel.
The driver and his girlfriend/passenger claimed that Daniel swung a pipe at them when in fact Daniel was only holding his dog's leash.

The driver was not charged as a result of the Stand Your Ground law.

Where is the national 24/7 media coverage that is demanding Justice for Daniel?

1) The police never told him not to pursue. The 911 operator advised that pursuit was not necessary. There is a significant difference.

2) The 911 operator gavce that advice AFTER Zimmerman started chasing on foot, which he did BECAUSE the 911 operator asked him where Martin had gone.

3) Zimmerman appears to have COMPLIED with the advice as he clearly acknowledges the advice and you can hear the running stop and his breathing start returning to normal.

"Zimmerman to follow this innocent your man, scare him, confront him,"

It appears that MARTIN confronted ZIMMERMAN, not the other way around. Martin appears to have been able to run away and elude Zimmerman, who clearly states he has no idea where Martin is. Martin appears to have doubled back and confronted and then attacked Zimmerman.

I have a question.... the photo of zimmermans head with the blood... is suppose to be 2 minutes after he killed Trayon... yet the police were said to be there 1 minute after the shooting..... the photo shows the person with a phone to their ear...... well if he was handcuffed right after the police got there how are his hands free to use the phone?or is he suppose to be using the phone before the police got there? but I do not believe the photo is stamped before the time the police got there...and who is running up taking a picture if this guy is still armed in crime scene? .... or did the police get there and let him run around with a cell phone before they handcuffed him? help me out here ....

You weren't. You've obnoxiously and persistently demanded people agree "It's real blood and lacerations," without being able to prove it yourself. You haven't hesitated to use Internet trolling techniques to become highly argumentative (irrational) toward anyone else legitimately skeptical of the first and second photoshop for the reasons I posted up above. Zimmerman had no visible injuries, laceration, scraping, or blood, or scab proof, unless he inflicted them on himself by gun fire recoil, or deliberately in some other way so he could fabricate what happened. Plus, he was never fully looking at the camera to see his nose, forehead or between his eyes. What could be seen of those areas gave no visible indication of injury.

The police surveillance camera originally networked by the media proved that several times as Zimmerman displayed his occipital area to the camera at each end of the police garage, plus, the cameras in the hallways of the police station. Not only did he show no signs of injury, he was alert, walking with an unencumbered steady gait, and even stopped to wipe his feet on the mat before entering the main building of the police station. No head injury will allow any of that to happen. Not even when the external signs of injury don’t exist at the time. Any time the head is hit hard on a surface, there will be some type of brain trauma (concussion at some degree) taking place which can last for hours, days, or even years.

The police may have uncuffed him at some point. While he appears to be holding a cell phone, it is not necessarily a cell phone. Reportedly Zimmerman told the photographer to call his (Zimmerman's) wife, which would indicate that he may have already been cuffed and could not use a cell phone. Then again, it may have been taken before the police arrived -- people do all kinds of things which might not seem prudent in hindsight.

In numerous posts, your latest being "The Heart of Whiteness", you make clear your hatred and intolerance of "whites" and are quick to label a poster, who's opinion differs from your own, as a "racist", etc., when the vast majority have actually stated nothing that could even remotely be considered racist.

I don't know you, or your firsthand experiences with racism, so I've tried very hard to not be overly judgemental, but enough is enough already. If you want others to stop stereotyping, thinking of us as "less than", etc., then for heavens sake, at least try to carry on an intelligently thought out conversation without all the bigoted statements on your part. Mixing personal experience with data and theory, he faces down the difficult realities of -racism and white privilege. He argues that any system that denies non-whites their full humanity also keeps whites from fully accessing their own. This book is both a cautionary tale for those who believe that they have transcended racism, and also an expression of the hope for genuine transcendence. When white people fully understand and accept the painful reality that they are indeed "the problem," it should lead toward serious attempts to change and join with others to change society.

I don't think were all the problem. My 11 year old son learned the "N" word off of black children on his school bus calling him that when he is not even black. Now he says all the time "I will jack you up N" and people look at us and assume he learned it from us.
