Nirvana fans won't believe their ears.

Ramiro Saavedra is a 27-year-old guitarist from Arequipa, Peru, who appeared on the national musical competition show "Yo Soy" ("I am") and totally astounded its judges and host with his near-perfect imitation of Kurt Cobain's voice.

Saavedra played a medley of songs from the Seattle grunge band's breakthrough sophomore album, "Nevermind," including the singles "Come as You Are" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit." The latter number was a request from the judges, who could barely contain themselves when Saavedra broke into its anthemic chorus.

One judge called Saavedra "the best contestant that we've had [on the show]" in his post-performance assessment of the guitarist.

Although a purist might note that Saavedra's singing is clearly based on a phonetic, more than a lyrical, appreciation of Cobain's songs -- there are some telling word flubs that an English-language ear will be quick to notice -- in a pinch, it's pretty rad. And anyone who has seen video of Nirvana in concert knows that Cobain himself famously slurred his words and botched his own lyrics.

Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Seattle in 1994. Nirvana is regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of all time, having shifted the attention of both the mainstream music industry and the general public towards alternative rock in the early 1990s.

I was never a Nirvana fan but the guy is good. I think Kurt's voice had a little more dimension to it but this guy is pretty good.

Wow, he's really good. Love the not-so-subtle Coke product placement. Funny how Peru is known for a different type of coke though.

He sounds incredibly similar to Cobain.
03:05 PM on 05/08/2012
he sounds A LOT like him but not identical or really even all that close. Some parts are better than others but he's kind of missing some of the lyrics. Since he normally speaks spanish I will give him a pass. I'd like to see him do the whole album in spanish just to see how it sounds.

for those who said there are many talented bands that do covers of nirvana, Ok people know it, but he's the first good imitator of kurt here in peru.
09:32 PM on 04/24/2012
i'm from peru, this guy is known for his covers of nirvana (recently), but he has his own band and own themes... i think he participated in this competition because he wanted the money to produce an album...
because here in peru, people who likes and make music doesn't have resources to produce a complete album, or even a single in a studio, it's very expensive

he's a great guy, who talk like he doesn't know how famous he had become

something he said, he liked nirvana and kurt cobain, but not drugs, and that's a good beginning

He doesn't sound anything other than a pale imitator of Kurt. Put 'em side by side and you will believe your ears.

And many other bands did. Was the greatest period of rock imo. And I'm certain anyone that knows anything about music would agree his "breakout" had nothing to do with luck and everything to do with musical talent.

I can actually understand him better that I could Kurt.
