Designer Richard Mishaan's Dreamy Family Home In Colombia In Architectural Digest (PHOTOS)

Work brought designer Richard Mishaan back to his native Colombia, but it was childhood nostalgia that inspired him to build a home there. Architectural Digest's new May 2012 issue offers a sneak peek into Mishaan's sunny getaway.

Located in the city of Cartagena, the home dates back to the 16th century and is as enchanting as the coastal town itself. Mishaan spent two years renovating the space, which now serves as a family retreat for his wife and teenage children.

The new space is decidedly modern and many of the light-filled rooms feature furniture designed by Mishaan himself. However, Mishaan also brought in a handful of carefully selected Colombian artifacts. These are prominently displayed in a tall bookshelf in the stylish living room, where the soaring ceiling also reveals 500-year-old Brazilian wood beams original to the building.

Other highlights? For us, it's probably the jaw-dropping ocean views of the Caribbean from the rooftop terrace and...well, the marble-walled waterfall in the open-air courtyard on the property. We'll say that's pretty memorable.
