ATLANTA -- Carmelo Anthony scored 39 points, and the New York Knicks outlasted the Atlanta Hawks 113-112 on Sunday in a game between two playoff-bound teams still battling for postseason seeding.

The Hawks took their final lead at 112-111 on Joe Johnson's 3-pointer with 1:50 left. Anthony countered with a jumper 10 seconds later for the final margin.

Off an inbound play with three seconds remaining, Atlanta's Marvin Williams beat Amare Stoudemire off the dribble at the top of the lane. But as he went for a dunk just before the buzzer, Stoudemire blocked the shot. Williams, who led Atlanta with a season-high 29 points, wanted a foul call on Anthony or Stoudemire, both of whom appeared to make contact.

Stoudemire started at center in place of Tyson Chandler, who was resting a sore knee.

The teams combined for 27 3-pointers on 42 attempts.

Stoudemire added 22 points and 12 rebounds in his second game after missing 13 with a sore back. Jeff Teague scored 23 for Atlanta, and Johnson had 22.

Knicks coach Mike Woodson gave Chandler the day off after New York played seven games in 11 days, and he was missed. The Knicks entered the game allowing 118.5 points in two games without Chandler and 93.8 when he plays.

Landry Fields, who moved into the starting lineup at forward Sunday, and Anthony scored 12 points each in the third quarter, and the Knicks made 7-of-8 3-pointers in the period to take a 94-93 lead. Fields finished with 18 points in a rare start.

The Hawks hold the No. 5 spot in the East and still have hopes of securing home-court advantage in a likely first-round matchup against the Celtics.

The Knicks are a half game ahead of Philadelphia for the No. 7 spot in the East.

NOTES: Knicks forward Jared Jeffries missed his third straight game with a sore right knee, and Woodson said he will not play in the last two regular-season games Wednesday against the Clippers and Thursday at Charlotte. ... Knicks uber-fan Spike Lee was at the game.

As a Knicks fan and a long time New Yorker who grew up loving the Knicks in the Patrick Ewing years I just want to offer this. Ewing never had a strong supporting cast. The Knicks now have an abundance of talent. Rest Chandler so Stat can get some time on the floor? That is a luxury.

Great first game back for Amare.

Knicks look like a tough out in the playoffs.

What do they charge for tickets in the arena?
For a game this important you would think that place would have been packed, it looked empty! Atlanta, what's up!!!

I think it would be a BIG mistake for Woods to move Melo from the Power Forward. Thats where he Excel thats where he brings them the most offense and if he doesnt bring them offense they are NOT going anywhere. Even Amare is not even in his right position as power foward. He plays better at the Center in Tyson Chandler's position. The best solution is to bring Amare off the bench to the center position. He'll still get his playing time. He'll still get his minutes and he will be in his Right position.

The scheme you suggest only takes into account the offensive game. Stoudamire at center is a liability defensively, particularly if you have Tyson Chandler. What do you propose to do, bring Chandler off the bench? Not for the money they are paying him, and he has galvanized them defensively this year, along with Mike Woodson. I don't think you bring Chandler off the bench in favor of Stoudamire at center, I don't think any team would.

I hear you offensively, but not defensively.

Excellent point!. But I do think Melo should remain at power forward. Maybe they can bring him off the bench as a substitute for Melo.

If Ron Artest can change his name, why doesn't Melo change his to Gone After The First Round Of Playoffs Again? Kind of hard to fit on a jersey i guess.

The knicks are better able to close out games something they werent able to do in the past. I wouldnt count them out as far as getting to the second round. Maybe you can return to eat crow then.

BTW Carmelo and Kobe are two of the most beautiful names in the NBA very unique I wouldnt change them.

In order to get to the second round, they would have to beat Miami or Chicago. Good luck.

Why not enjoy the game and wait and see? These guys are playing hard and playing well. Why not break down and give them credit for it.

Your point is actually irrelevant in relation to the story. The story is about what happened in this particular game. You made no reference to it.

If Melo had played like this all season he's would have earned his first MVP award. The Knicks are not the team I'd want to meet in the first round.

Not exactly true. Melo himself said the main difference is effort. Solid defense has given them a chance to settle down and run their offense instead of D'Antonio style run and gun which tends to produce a significant number of bad shots.

You still see Melo iso on the perimeter beating his man one on one.
