Animal Collective's 'Transverse Temporal Gyrus' Released For Record Store Day (AUDIO)

Animal Collective's Guggenheim Music Now Available

On Record Store Day this year, massive amounts of incredible music were released on vinyl exclusively for the occasion. Among the hundreds of limited releases was Transverse Temporal Gyrus, a 12" by Animal Collective featuring two collaged tracks of their performance at the Guggenheim Museum in 2010 as part of an installation by Danny Perez.

The original renditions of "Transverse Temporal Gyrus" were two, three-hour performances that randomized tracks written by each member of the band. The songs and sounds were submitted to a computer program that jumbled, then spit them back out the tracks in a 36-channel surround sound system emitted through 36 speakers running throughout the Guggenheim. The performance combined the sounds of Animal Collective with the surreal, light-driven visual art of Perez.

While it is difficult to determine the audio in videos of the event, the vinyl-edition tracks have been added online. It's easy to imagine the cavernous sounds of the performance resonating throughout the spiral center of the Guggenheim Museum. The collages are ethereal, vast and often nonsensical in their long pauses and outbursts of noise.

The vinyl version of the collage is the only physical version of the tracks, with only 1,000 up for grabs.
