Recently I caught myself admiring the put-together look of a fellow editor while we were at lunch. Her look was simple -- tailored skirt and jacket -- until you got to her feet: she was wearing oxfords with heels that were anything but simple. They were pale blue and pink and almost architectural in design. I ran to my computer as quickly as my (plain) heeled feet could take me to hunt them down. As I was searching, I came across other examples of otherwise modest shoes with incredibly detailed heels courtesy of designers like Nicholas Kirkwood for Rodarte and Alexander McQueen.

Karl Lagerfeld continued the trend with his Chanel fall 2012 collection. The show, which was set in the fanciest cave ever, included huge stalagmites dotting the runway. The heels were equally crystalline: clear plexiglass, also adorned with stalactites. Marc Jacobs' pumps for Louis Vuitton's fall 2012 collection were also a clear amber resin (I almost expected to see a mosquito fossilized inside them).
