World's Smallest Dog 2012: Milly, The Puerto Rican Chihuahua, On Her Way To Earning The Title (PHOTO)

Posted: 04/23/2012 1:30 pm Updated: 04/23/2012 6:12 pm

Meet Milly. She is a three month-old Puerto Rican Chihuahua who might be getting some big recognition soon. Milly is on her way to earning the title for World's Smallest Dog. She weighs about 7 ounces and is 3 inches tall.

"To get an idea of just how petite she is," the dog's caretaker said according to PeoplePets, "when she was first born she received milk from an eyedropper."

If Milly is crowned as the world's smallest dog she will debunk Beyonce, a dachshund mix originally from California who at four-and-a-half inches was well on her way to becoming the world's smallest pooch.

But unfortunately for Milly, she might have to wait a couple more months before she is able to claim her official tittle. The Chihuahua is only three months old and the Guinness World Record only grants awards to dogs who are fully grown.

"For smallest animal records, we require that the animal be fully grown, in this case at least one year old," a rep for Guinness told People Pets. "We won't be able to verify if this dog would be a record holder until then."

If Milly won first prize as the world's smallest dog, her owner, Vanessa Semler, says she would use Milly's spotlight to raise awareness on how to properly care for dogs she told Fox News Latino. Semler owns 14 dogs.

“I would definitely use that platform to tell the world that we all need to share responsibility on caring for pets,” Semler said.

Now that you've seen the smallest dog, check out these photos of "Giant George", the biggest dog in the world:

It was very small indeed. Kuddo to the owner for her patience in taking care of this little dog. You can do the same with micro teacup puppies for sale at lepetiteteacupboutique.com Thanks for posting!

Mine is the last post. To those of you who think I was breeding for a very small dog you are so WRONG. Smudin came out a litter of 4 male maltippo brothers. His father is a 5lb black toy poodle & his mom is a 6lb Maltese. All his sibling weigh now more than 4 lbs right now at 4 months of age. By 6 months the growing will stop so we'll see what happens then.

It is easy to be the smallest dog when that dog is still a puppy & in most cases stil growing. I have a 4 month old Maltipoo that is 4 months old & weights 1 pound 8 ounces. Lets see what the above puppys weight at say 6 moths. That is an age when in small breeds what you see is what you get.

I am sorry but dogs this small have so many health issues! Grow the F up breeders and people who desire them ! You are creating lives that are destined for medical problems! But YOU have a 'title'. Make your D**k feel bigger?

I had words with the burger joint when they accidentally put one of those things on my burger. If I wanted a hot dog, I would have asked for one.

When comic books in the 1950's started selling "a dog in a teacup" for fifty cents people from Chihuahua joked that they'd finally found a way of getting rid of the darn little rodents by exporting them to the U.S.

14 dogs!? must be a breeder. how many weak, deformed, disabled, epileptic puppies died or had to be put down on your way to smallest dog fame?
02:50 AM on 05/02/2012
You assume too much. Not everyone with 14 dogs is a breeder. Some do rescue/foster care. And not every breeder breeds weak, deformed, disabled, epileptic puppies. Both breeders I've bought puppies from all produced healthy puppies with excellent conformation and wonderful temperaments.

alot of breeders do not focus on conformation or health. they focus on marketable. they breed for small, small and small or for a popular color alone. paying no attention to if the smallest male she could find was a sound male, and if the smallest female she had can or should even be giving birth.its not just chihuahuas, i found shihtzu breeders who do the same and put forth disgustingly unhealthy pups that are small or are a particular color. i was a dog groomer. ive seen the proud parents of a new tiny puppy. all they can do is go on and on about how tiny she is going to be, while all i can see is her crooked legs, crooked back, her so severely bulged eyes she couldnt even close them all the way and she was already forming cataracts from irritation. which didnt matter because she did not respond to movement and i was pretty sure she was blind. she also had a hole in her scull the size of a quarter. she was small though! i have nothing wrong with breeders, my mom is a breeder. i also wish to one day specialize in a breed. i just tend to question when breeders do things like breed for tiny and tinier and tiniest. they end up struggling for the litters to even survive.

This woman has 14 dogs and wants to raise awareness on how to properly care for them? I find it hard to believe that she can give all 14 dogs the attention that they need and crave....
02:51 AM on 05/02/2012
It's not that difficult, especially if all 14 are Chihuahuas. Not every dog craves attention, either.
