Steven Thorpe, British Teen Who Was Declared Brain Dead By Doctors, Makes Miracle Recovery

Posted: 04/24/2012 8:55 pm Updated: 04/26/2012 4:03 am

Despite being declared brain dead by four doctors, a car crash victim has made a miracle recovery after his parents begged for a second opinion before his life support was due to be switched off, BBC News reports.

Four years ago, Steven Thorpe from Warwickshire, England, was involved in a horrific car accident that killed one of his friends.

Thorpe, who was just 17 at the time, suffered near-fatal injuries to his head and was rushed to University Hospital in Coventry for emergency surgery, the Sun reports.

When a craniotomy failed to improve Thorpe's condition, doctors told his family that they did not expect him to recover.

"The injury to Steven’s brain was extremely critical and several CT scans of the head showed almost irreversible damage," said a recent statement released by the hospital.

The situation was so dire that Thorpe's doctors -- who put the teenager in a chemically-induced coma -- even told his parents to consider donating his organs.

"I think the doctors wanted to give me three days on the life support machine and the following day they said they wanted to turn it off," Thorpe told the Sun.

But his father refused to give up and begged the hospital to save his son.

With little hope left, Thorpe's father approached private doctor Julia Piper for help, the Sun reports.

Piper discovered something astounding: Faint brain waves, that indicated a slim chance of recovery, were detected, the Daily Mail reports.

The hospital finally agreed to bring the teenager out of his coma to see if he could survive on his own.

Incredibly, Thorpe not only survived but has since made an astounding recovery. He was released from the hospital only seven weeks later.

"Although Steven did have catastrophic injuries and there may be long-term damage from that, [we thought that] at the age of 17…he might be robust enough to do quite well," explained Piper.

Today, 21-year-old Thorpe says he is grateful to just be alive.

Currently studying to be an accountant at a college in Coventry, Thorpe -- who has undergone four surgeries to reconstruct his face and whose arm is still in a sling -- said he is trying to live as fully as he can.

"I don't think my outlook's changed. I'm a very driven person. I'm living to succeed in life," he told the BBC.

"Hopefully (my experience) can help people see that you should never give up. My father believed I was alive -- and he was correct," Thorpe said.

As a neurologist, I would like to comment that it is impermissible to declare brain death in someone who is in a chemically induced coma. Secondly, it is hard to imagine why someone who is thought to be brain dead should need to be in a chemically induced coma. Thirdly, it is hard to interpret what is meant by his CT scans showing "almost irreversible" injury; in any case, that is pretty much a meaningless statement as far as brain death is concerned. Someone can have irreversible injury and still survive. Finally, miraculous recoveries though rare do tend to occur more in victims of traumatic brain injury (like car crashes) and not in victims of brain injury to lack of oxygen or blood flow (drowning or heart attack victims). I bet this boy did not meet criteria for brain death, in which case his doctors should have avoided prognosticating until 3 months after injury; 3 months is the recognized period to wait after traumatic brain injury to determine whether someone will end up in a vegetative state or not. Either this story was mis-reported or some doctor did not do his homework.

Sounds to me that the doctors got greedy for body organs and let the kid's life take second priority simply because the odds were low and expensive. There is nothing miraculous about bad medical decisions based on economics, that get corrected.

I disagree that it is happening because the doctors are idiots. I think most are simply going by what they are taught, and what the machines and lab tests are telling them. But the FACT is that the ONLY thing that truly IS "death" is prolonged cessation of a heartbeat and breathing. Medical science has been trying to use cessation of brain activity as a criteria, but it is so unreliable that there HAVE been quite a few of these "miraculous" recoveries. This criteria was developed with the sole intent of taking organs from living persons and giving them to others. I bought in to and was in fact a vocal supporter of heart transplantation up until about a year ago when I started finding out about stories like this. Now I am opposed.

You are correct it these 'errors' are motivated by the profits from transplants, and is corporate medicine's policy.

Too bad it happened in the UK for that to be the case. "Pulling the plug" is more of the government trying to save money through mediocre "health care".

I have said this all my life....Doctors are Idiots....They are an expert in nothing....They only know what someone from the past has taught them....They come right out and tell you that they have no clue about anything...Its called practicing Medicine...Key word...Practice...We are the lab rats...They ask what's wrong...we tell them...They say here try this and if it doesn't get better in 2 to 3 days come back....Now what does this tell everyone?

Are you kidding? Learning from someones teachings is called Education. The only one without a clue seems to be 'practicing' journalistic commentary without a license.

Some of the dumbest people on the planet are highly educated...In observation of your post, you also may fall in this catagory??

Doctors move much to quickly in their quest to harvest organs. Far to often we hear about these "Medical Miracles". No doubt that astonishing things do happen, but more often then not - it is incompetence not Gods Will or Medical Miracles that cause these phenomena. These Doctors need some additional training.

Corporate medical policies need to be corrected. This is the result of for profit healthcare, rather than for people healthcare.
09:46 AM on 04/26/2012
This happens more often than people are aware of. Our medical community is tearing the living, beating hearts out of people, some of whom are actually AWARE of what is happening to them. (Can you imagine dying like that?) http://www.organfacts.net/notdead/zd/

Doesn't sound like there is any consideration here to any divine intervention; that's just the normal human arrogance.

this is a preview of things to come IF Obama care and socialized medicine win out? the doctors in the government hospital, ( likely going by government panal guidlines) would have pulled the plug on this guy "after three days" (which leads me to wonder if there is some three day guidline on coma's?) only due to the family bringing in a private doctor was it thought to possibly reduce the heavy meds they had him under so you could detect brain activity? he owes his life to the doctor that was not working under government guidlines?

News flash: insurance companies pull the plug on people who run out of money every day.

It is so nice to see this type of story being reported. Doctors are human beings and can make mistakes. If this young man's parents had not been so adamant to save his life, he might not be here today. Good wishes to him and his brave Mom and Dad.

Simply amazing. Wishing him lots of luck with his studies and his life. I hope he can return some of that miracle somewhere else in life.

I've always been of the opinion that we give up way too soon........each of us is different and depending on the injury, recovery is possible........sometimes it takes the brain time to heal......we don't know enough about how our bodies heal themselves........sometimes patience is what it takes, considering the healing time varies based on the extent of the injuries.......

Look at him in his shirt and tie, isnt he sweet?!?!? Good for you young fellow, and good for your parents for fighting to keep him alive. That is LOVE

What a touching, wonderful, frustrating story! It makes you wonder and cringe thinking about how many people might have survived if their life support hadn't been disconnected so soon!!!
