Girl Falls Into Sidewalk Sinkhole While Talking On Phone In China, Is Rescued By Taxi Driver (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: 04/24/2012 11:13 am Updated: 04/24/2012 11:24 am

A young girl unexpectedly fell into a sidewalk sinkhole while talking on the phone in northern China on March 25, according to QMI Agency.

Wang Wei, a taxi driver, witnessed the incident and immediately pulled over to help the girl, the Telegraph reports.

After calling out to the victim and receiving no response, Wang climbed into the hole while holding on to a cable.

"I called out to her but she didn't respond. After I shook her a little, she came to," Wang told the Telegraph.

Emergency personnel eventually arrived at the scene with an extended ladder and pulled Wang and the girl out of the 19-foot hole.

According a report by NBC's "TODAY," the young woman did not notice two caution blocks positioned on either side of the area. Nevertheless, as news anchor Ann Curry pointed out, the zone does not seem to have been properly marked.

The girl's family members later tracked down Wang to thank him for his heroic rescue, CNN reports.

Earlier this month, a woman in Beijing died after a sidewalk collapse sent her plummeting into a pool of scalding water.

Yang Erjing was walking to work when the pavement gave way, most likely due to corroded pipes that were being repaired nearby, China Daily reported.

The 27-year-old died from organ failure after 99 percent of her body was burned.

Different person. This girl did not fall into a pool of scalding hot water. She was concussed, though. So, it's definitely not humor.

No wrong girl the one you're talking about fell into hot water. No one jumped in to get her out. This girl was on her phone.

She tipped the taxi driver for " getting her out of a hole" she was literally in?

In USA especially in NEW YORK CITY she would have been awarded milllions of dollars in a lawsuit because that sinkhole did not have big warning signs and a minature steel fence around it with a red light lantern attached for nighttime strollers like CON ED puts up. How is anyone supposed to know that two standing poles seen in the video warn of a hidden trap-door like cover over a hole 20 ft. deep?

More proof that cellphone use is dangerous. It makes people loose awareness of where they are and what they are doing. I have seen people walk into door frames, stumble off curbs, get into car accidents. One lady walked straight off a pier and into the ocean while engaged in a cell phone conversation (saw it here on HuffPo.)

There was a woman whose baby carriage fell down one of those in Eastern Europe, and she was not on a cellphone.

This will be the first time a person walking around talking on their phone, that had a mishap, you can't blame on the phone. I'm sure this lady was just concerned about walking into a lamppost when this happened.

Yikes! Hope she is ok. I am always afraid of that happening in NYC, that's why I don't walk on the grates.

This is a prime example of what less regulations look like.

Yes I do, and what is your point? China is a land so unregulated that rivers catch on fire from pollution. But hey lets abolish the EPA, who needs a stinking river or natural resources.

China has "selective regulations". Some things are strongly regulated, while others are not regulated at all. Some thing are legal, some things are illegal, but most things arent enforced.
Regulation is not what is on the books, it is what is enforced.
