Jeremy Deller Creates Inflatable Stonehenge For Glasgow Festival Of Visual Arts (VIDEO)

Woah, An Inflatable Stonehenge!

Not since a certain scene in "This is Spinal Tap" have we seen Stonehenge look so weird. Turner Prize winning artist Jeremy Deller has created a 20-foot inflatable version of the iconic ruins in his latest art installation. Part pre-historic monument, part Chuck E. Cheese, the stay-puffed work created quite a scene at the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Arts this year.

The piece, entitled "Sacrilege," toys with the worldwide recognition of the architectural icon. The artist told The Guardian: "Stonehenge is part of British identity but no one knows what it was for." This combination of massive familiarity and underlying mystery made Stonehenge a subject that was "ripe for using in different ways," Deller states in the video above. (We are glad one of those ways was for bouncing.)

The piece took two months to create, in collaboration with the company Inflatable World Leisure: "The Premier manufacturer of Inflatables for the Professional Hirer." We are guessing hundreds of bouncing children thought this was one definitely worthwhile historical inquiry.

The Glasgow International Festival of Arts will run until May 7, and features contemporary art from over 130 artists.

Do you see a future in inflatable art, or is this taking audience participation a bit too far? Let us know in the comments.
