CHISINAU, Moldova -- Moldova's president has refused to sign a law that would have meant that foreigners convicted of sexually abusing children in Moldova were chemically castrated.

President Nicolae Timofti on Tuesday called the legislation "torture," saying it violated human rights, and sent it back to Parliament.

Parliament approved the law on March 6 after lawmakers said the impoverished nation was attracting pedophiles from the West. The law was criticized by the Council of Europe and Amnesty International.

Parliament will now have to modify the legislation.

Don't castrate pedophiles. Just put them in jail.

Too expensive. Castration on prime TV, then let them have productive work lives again.

What about the torture of poverty-stricken, exploited, trafficked children? Don't they have rights?

Um... have they ever heard of deportation?

oh yea , just shuffle them off to " somewhere else" , so they can keep pedophiling there . Very humane . Castration in this case is the humane thing to do , to prevent further harm to innocent children . So it hurts ? Good , he hurt his victims for life .

Maybe extreme but I'd bet it would cut down on pedophile vacations to the country.

so it is not considered torture to sexually abuse a child ..but it is torture to castrate the abuser ....this is disturbing on more than one level

No, what's disturbing is that ANYONE would support such horror. Makes them no better than the people they want to punish. Enough people have been wrongly convicted of crimes (especially tourists who are not familiar with the laws of the countries they visit) that maiming a person is way over the top. Such insnae punishments cannot be undone.

My micro-bio may be empty but my head isn't.

This was chemical not surgical castration, the minute they no longer get the shots they start being able to 'perform again'. And frankly I'd do the same thing, only surgically on a 2nd conviction for sex with a child.
