Powerball: Philadelphia Transit Workers Win $172.7 Million Jackpot

Powerball Jackpot

PHILADELPHIA — A pool of 48 workers at Philadelphia's transit agency scored the jackpot-winning ticket in this week's $172.7 million Powerball drawing, lottery officials said Thursday.

The winning ticket in Wednesday's drawing for the multi-state lottery was sold at a newsstand at a downtown mall, Pennsylvania Lottery officials said. That ticket was bought by a group of employees who work at the headquarters of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, said Kristin Geiger, a spokeswoman for the agency.

SEPTA operates buses, trains and trolleys in the city and its suburbs and is regularly strapped for cash. Its downtown headquarters is right across the street from the newsstand where the winning ticket was sold.

"We're excited for them," Geiger said – acknowledging she was not among the winners. In a statement, SEPTA said the group – a mix of staffers and managers – wished to remain anonymous.

The pool of winning workers features people who have worked for the agency for as little as two years while others have been there for nearly 40 years, the agency said.

Geiger said she didn't know how many tickets the group had bought, or how often they had played the Powerball, which is sold in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Wednesday's winning ticket correctly matched all five white balls, 04-25-29-34-43, plus the red Powerball, 29. The winning ticket has an annuity value of $172.7 million and a cash value of $107,533,278.27.

Big as the prize is, it does not rank high on the biggest lottery jackpots of all time. That title belongs to last month's $640 million Mega Millions jackpot.

The lottery numbers should be configured that hundreds of people all share a jackpot. Its better to get some money into a lot of peoples hands than just to one. The odds are so impossible to win; you need to pool together in large groups to play as many numbers as you can. Thats your best odds of getting anything at all. So far the most I ever won is $20.

Always think like that. Giant money should be divided to as many as possible. Casino do the same one giant winner tons of losers.

CONGRATULATIONS! I love it so much when these jackpots are shared by a group of people rather than one big winner. It just seems that some of these ridiculously high jackpots are better won by a group since lottery officials refuse to split up the big jackpots into more drawings.
So, enjoy your windfalls and don't get too crazy. Remember to share with those around you and you will be repaid ten-fold.
By the way....YOU look familiar!! Hey, it's my long, lost uncle!! LOL!

This is fantastic news! I love it when a large number of people win, especially in this economy. These winners could thrive comfortably for the rest of their lives if they deposit the winnings into a high interest saving account and live off of the interest, while creating employment for forty eight destitute unemployed/underemployed workers to take their previous positions. So then actually ninety eight people won.

In Colorado, where we also play Powerball, the cash value of the prize is 40% of the total, or about $68 million. Divided by 48, it is about $1.4 million each, and they will owe taxes on that amount. They are millionaires until the tax bill is due.
It is still a nice amount to win for the $2 invested, but I wish the lottery officials and the press would be more honest with what is actually won.

The winning ticket has an annuity value of $172.7 million and a cash value of $107,533,278.27. If they take the cash, it is roughly $2,240,000 each. After taxes, they will still be millionaires.

This is a cool story. I'll bet there are some dire situations within that 48 and this is a sweet surprise for them.

My guess is that a 49th employee will turn up to sue the rest because somebody forgot something trivial and the others won't take the high road and cut him in, but send him down tough luck alley.
