Detroit Tigers slugger Delmon Young was arrested very early this morning for allegedly assaulting a man outside of a New York City hotel, the New York Post reports.
A NYPD spokesperson confirmed the arrest to the Detroit Free Press and indicated that Young faces a hate crime charge.
“Basically, there was an incident at the hotel (and) some anti-Semitic remarks,” Detective Joseph Cavitolo told the Detroit Free Press.
Following a fourth straight loss to cap a frustrating 1-6 home stand, the Tigers traveled to New York City late Thursday night for a three-game series against the Yankees over the weekend.
Less than 24 hours before the teams were set to begin a 2011 ALDS rematch, the Post reported that cops were called to a hotel in Midtown around 2:40 a.m. after a allegedly intoxicated Young had pushed a man to the ground.
NY1 reports that the intoxicated outfielder was taken to Roosevelt Hospital before being deposited at the Midtown North precinct house.
On Friday morning, the Detroit Free Press also reported that Tigers spokesman Rick Thompson declined to comment but said "we'll get back to you" about Young's status.
Drafted by Tampa Bay, Young debuted in 2006 and was traded to Minnesota after the 2007 season. During his time in the minor leagues, Young received a 50-game suspension for hurling his bat at an umpire. He spent four years with the Twins before getting traded to Detroit in the middle of the 2011 season.
Young, 26, is currently batting .242 with five RBI in 74 plate appearances.
