UFOs Over Russia: Mysterious Sights Spotted In St. Petersburg Sky

A group of unexplained lights over the Russian city of St. Petersburg on April 9, 2012.

It must have seemed like an aerial invasion to the many eyewitnesses who gazed skyward in St. Petersburg, Russia, on the nights of April 9 through 11.

Reports of the UFO activity didn't initially receive wide coverage outside of St. Petersburg, but have since trickled out.

Most of the strange light formations were seen and videotaped by many people in and around Russia's second-largest city, including one ball-shaped object seen hovering above St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport.

According to the Russian news site LifeNews, airport employees were concerned the UFO might cause a disruption during takeoff and landing of aircraft.

A short time later, before any action could be taken, the UFO vanished.

As strange lights danced around in the sky above the city, citizens aimed their cameras, the Moscow Times reported.

One video shows four bright lights hovering in the evening sky near a tall building before eventually disappearing behind the structure. (See image below)

The Baltinfo news agency -- which covers the news in the Baltic Sea region -- reported receiving phone calls from concerned St. Petersburg residents.

"My daughter who lives over on Grazhdanke told me about a UFO," said one caller. "I live on Komendantsky Prospekt. I looked out the window and also clearly saw an orange spot. Then one spot separated and plummeted downward. The spot flickered, disappeared and reappeared. It is visible in various neighborhoods."

Authorities have yet to make any pronouncements on the various UFO sightings, despite unconfirmed reports that local army officials hinted the aerial activity was some sort of training exercise.

And, according to the Moscow Times, at least one local scientist has gone out on a limb with his personal UFO views.

"Aliens look at us as if we are idiots, undeveloped people," said Sergei Smirnov of the Pulkovo Observatory outside of St. Petersburg.

"Perhaps they have fenced us in with their own sort of screen for the whole galaxy and are sending warnings to hundreds of billions of stars that the civilization near the Dwarf star -- which we call the sun -- is dangerous."

Actually, the "QuarentineTheory" (as the solution to the Fermi Paradox "Where are they?") is decades old. It does have something to be said for it. Until we learn to play nicely with other species....

i dunno if i believe in aliens or not but if they are out there and know about us i could see why they would basically keep us cacooned in a "cloak of ignorance" until we've reached a less hostile stage of development.

This is what they might look like up close if it was captured with a prosumer camera in a fixed position with the aperture open for 1.6 seconds. I took it late at night myself but I didn't see it with my eyes. I blew the photo up and cropped it because it only appears as a blurred little line in the original photo.

I saw nearly the same thing in December up in Limerick PA at first I thought there were lights along a power line so I stopped (My eyes are getting bad) then I saw it float and then I thought I was going crazy. Since nobody else was around perhaps? But this video makes me wonder.
I have just chalked it up as Chinese lanterns (at dinner time in Dec.)

I saw a light on the horizon at twilight. It stood stationary for a number of seconds, before streaking away faster than anything I've ever seen. It was like turning on a flashlight, in terms of speed.

The sheer number of galaxies, stars and planets dramatically increases the odds of the existence of intelligent life but also decreases the chances that we will ever get to meet any before our civilization disappears. Even at light speed (which scientist doubt we will ever reach) of 186000 miles a second or 700 million miles an hour, it takes millions of human years to reach other galaxies and stars.

Even at the speed of light we'd never reach those other galaxies cuz space itself is expanding faster than the speed of light thus increasing the space between galaxies faster than it may be traversed. Aliens from another galaxy have no way of reaching us. They'd travel forever at the speed of light never getting anywhere as they watch the end of the Universe unfold before them as everything turns into a red glow.

Just a suggestion; take it or leave it, but it has been well thought-out while writing a book-length treatise on the subject.
Lights in the night sky, as such—whether bobbing, weaving, floating, unmoving, blinking, colorful, whatever—have almost no credence whatsoever as extraterrestrial intelligence-produced ships or craft. They are just lights—balloons, various types of candles, gaseous blobs, swamp gas, planets or stars, on-and-on.
If you are close enough and your view is good enough and you see 'metallic' craft in the air, on land or on the seas that in your honest opinion do not appear or behave as any man-made craft could reasonably do, you're probably on the right track.
I'd give far more than I can afford just to witness such an event—just once even! For I am convinced they are visiting our planet.
And yes, that Russian scientist is probably right. We are utterly primitive as compared with advanced extraterrestrial intelligence. Utterly!
