NFL Draft 2012 Round 4 Results: Kirk Cousins, Joe Adams Among Picks

Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins celebrates his fourth-quarter touchdown pass to wide receiver Keith Nichol during the Outback Bowl on Jan. 2, 2012.

Every round of the NFL Draft usually has a standout pick. Sometimes that pick is a player who has fallen much further than expected. In other rounds, it's a player that many believe was taken too high (cough.. Bruce Irvin.. cough).

The third day didn't disappoint, as the fourth round started off with a surprise. Just two days after seemingly anointing Robert Griffin III as the face of the franchise, the Washington Redskins picked another quarterback.

Before the draft, the Redskins paid a heavy price to trade up in order to select RG3 with the No. 2 overall selection. So everyone was caught off guard when they became first team since 1989 to spend two picks in the first four rounds on quarterbacks. Will there be a quarterback controversy in the national's capital? ESPN's Ron Jaworski certainly thinks so, saying during the television broadcast that the Redskins caused more problems than they solved.

Other notable selections in the fourth round were Joe Adams of Arkansas -- selected by Carolina at No. 104 overall -- who happened to pull off one of the best highlights of the 2011 season. Denver picked up a blocker for new quarterback Peyton Manning with center Phillip Blake out of Baylor and the Bills stuck to defense again by taking linebacker Nigel Bradham out of Florida State.

Scroll down to check out the full list of picks from the fourth round of the NFL Draft.

More results: Round 1, Round 2, Round 3.

This is why I did not want RGIII to go to Washington. Both of these young men deserve better. Both will be hampered in developing into a starting NFL QB. There is not enough reps with the ball and the first team to properly develop both of them, and teach them. To bring Cousins in and tell him he is going to be a backup when this youngman has prepared all his life to lead an NFL Team is not right. To draft RGIII as the face of the team and bring in another qb to develop to replace him is not right. The NFL is back to being meat on the hoof, as in the old days.

I understand the Redskins move in getting Cousins. Then I do not get it. If you pick a QB in the first round, then I can see taking one in the 6th or 7th round, but drafting one high enough, who sees himself as a starter? Perhaps they plan to get a couple of draft choices for him by training camp.

Or perhaps they are being totally disrespectful as usual to black QB's. Remember McNabb got taken out of a game in the last 2 minutes as he drove the team down the field. They even said he was injured when he was fine.

This can go back to Doug Williams who won the SB and wasnt invited to camp the next season.

The Colts drafted players who will help Luck succeed. The Redskins drafted a player who's also a rookie that plays the same position. How can that help he in any way?
I can understand getting a vet free agent but what's the point in having 2 rookies compete for the starting job. What if Cousins has a great pre season? Should he start? Of course the best player should start but then you would have wasted picks this year next year and the year after.

Being a Dallas fan, isnt the only reason why I hate the Redskins.

Or perhaps they feel a quarterback from a successful BIG10 school might have a better chance to succeed rather than one from a perennial doormat from the Big12.
Cousins plays against a top team just about every week, RG3 plays maybe three or four a season. But if you wish to make this a racial issue, who am I to get between a guy and his dream.

What's going to end first?:

1. RGIII as the starting QB in Washington.
2. Kirk Cousins being on the team.
3. Mike Shanahan being the head coach.

SO WHAT if Kirk Cousins was the Redskins' third-highest ranked QB on their big board. They already have a QB. Get the kid some protection, a tackle, a tight end, a guard, a center, another running back (Lamar Miller).

The Redskins are cursed. Poor RGIII, poor Kurt Cousins. This will not end well.

Wait a minute....what do I care? GO EAGLES

Rather an HC/GM controversy...

Nothing wrong with having 2 QBs around just in case. We've seen way too many times very successful college QBs doesn't necessarily translate to the same in the NFL.

Still, what with the talent abounding in the Cousins pick and the draft picks given up...

Absurd.

Cousins should be mad as hell at the Skins picking him behind the franchise QB! No doubt he would want to play and if someone else had drafted him he probably would have. The only way now would be for RG3 were to get hurt....but nobody wishes for that!

Just another headscratcher of a draft pick by the Washington Redskins.
04:18 PM on 04/29/2012
Made sense to me. Cousins isn't awful, but he also isn't going to be anybody's starter in week 1 or maybe at all in 2012. He's not quite there yet. So either he continues to improve until Washington's ready to trade him in a couple years, or he's there if Griffin III gets hurt or underperforms. Either way, Washington gets insurance for their top pick, and Cousins gets to work towards becoming a starter somewhere.

Back to the point MildenHall made, it would have been better for Cousins to go to a team with an established, but older QB. Then he could have learned from him and hopefully become the starter in a few years. He won't learn anything from a QB, (RG3), with as little experience as he has himself.

It was a waste of a pick for Washington. The could have addressed other needs on their team and kept two of the three existing QBs on their roster.

Why waste picks on someone who probably not play...not even on special teams?

They already gave up many picks to get RGIII, they need to use their pics more wisely. Their offensive line is weak, for instance. Plenty of good guards/tackles in the 4th round.

QB insurance comes from a veteran backup, not another rookie. They might BOTH be busts. Nobody is there to teach them anything. Rex Grossman is no teacher.

The Shanahans would love for Cousins to start somehow. The will be subliminal support for him the entire season. I also wont be surprised if Kile tries some rotation or Tebow offense nonsense.

A team goes all in to trade up for rgiii, but taking another qb in the 4th somehow creates a qb controversy? Ridiculous.

Ridiculous? Hardly. Insane; demented; absurd.

Shanahan's bipolar.

Are you suggesting that there is a QB controversy? Or are you just unnecessarily quibbling with my choice of words (particularly since ridiculous means absurd)?

I guess you dont get it. Good thing people who know what they're talking about know what a terrible move this was. Totally unnecessary. Why not instead get a lineman to protect RG3?

You're simply arguing that it was a dumb pick. That's a whole different story from whether or not the pick creates a QB controversy. Are you suggesting that it does create a QB controversy or that RGIII isn't the clear cut starter? Like I said, such a suggestion is ridiculous, and I'm not alone in this opinion. See the link below (published after my post).

You should go back to watching girls' soccer.

I've got to agree with you. Being a Spartan myself that's difficult to say as Kirk has been great for State. But Griffin is an exciting and talented playmaker. Washington made an error picking them both, it makes no sense.
