PANAMA CITY, Panama — Panamanian police named an American ex-Marine as a person of interest Sunday in the disappearance of a 42-year-old California woman last seen on an archipelago near the Costa Rica border.

Police in Panama and the United States haven't identified Brian Brimager as a suspect as they investigate the case of Yvonne Baldelli, who was reportedly dating Brimager. But Panama national police official Alexis Munoz said Sunday that Brimager had raised investigators' interest.

Later in the day, Baldelli's mother, Lillian Faust, who is in Panama for the investigation, said she thinks her daughter is dead and begged for Brimager to tell what he knows about what happened to her.

"My husband, I, the famiy know that something happened to her. Some people want to say that she's out there somewhere, but everyone in the family knows that's not possible," Faust said.

"We did not want to accept it for a long time, but we have accepted it," she added.

Panama police said Brimager left Panama for Costa Rica and the United States some 10 days after last being seen with Baldelli in November on the Bocas del Toro islands. Baldelli's family reported her missing in January.

Munoz said witnesses at the hotel where the couple stayed reported they had a "violent" relationship and frequently fought and argued. Panamanian officials said Brimager was between the ages of 35 and 40 and had brought Baldelli to the islands.

On Thursday, FBI and Panamanian forensic investigators visited the hostel.

The mother said she had never met Brimager, who she thinks is from Southern California.

Faust said authorities had not told them that Brimager is suspected of anything. "I do not know, but if he knows something I would love for him to speak," she said.

Baldelli's sister, Michelle Faust, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the missing woman had gone to Panama in September to design and produce clothing to sell on the islands' beaches.

She said the family had talked with the boyfriend after he returned to the U.S., but declined to give any details of what was said.

Munoz said Brimager had worked while in Panama as a performer in bars playing guitar and singing for tips.

Why don't half the people that leave remarks have it made about the subject??? Instead of non-sense that has nothing to do with it. The Panama police don't really care and sad to say they probably have enough problems of their own then to deal with a beloved American woman.

What is it with all of the Marine/Army murders? I think a lot of these guys need more help upon returning home than they are getting. They are trained to kill then they get brought home with forgotten about with often violent results.

I don't believe I'm the only one that got a nasty smell or murder here. Sadly, the police are not doing much to solve this crime. Where are the sniffer dogs, Interpol, New Scotland Yard, Blood Spatter specialists, Panamanian police, and all those that can bring this case to a close? My guess, it was the marine. They are trained to kill in cold blood. This marine had both the expertise and the motive. He needs to be aggressively questioned using Sodium thiopental. They can do that there. Justice must be served.

He did it, or had someone else do it. I would like to know what he said to the parents when he got back. They didn't say what he said. Well, I hope for the best, but. I hope they find out who did and tell where the body is. If it was on an island, think Natalie.

A marine that gets a BCD or a DD in a general court martial is an X-Marine. They don't have the right to use the title "former Marine."

Wow, he's an ex Marine. What does that have to do with the story? Does anyone in their right mind think the Marine Corps requires people leaving the service to promise to kill someone? I'm so tired of this trash.

They bring up this fact because marines are trained to kill. Thus, he had the expertise to carry out this heinous crime.

He was the last person seen with her, He was violent, He was an ex marine with a strong history of violence that he was trained to kill. He was not concerned for her safety and whereabouts. I think he looks very suspicous. Please panamanian ploice, find her body, and the killer.

Women have to be careful these days. I hope they find her and if she is dead find the killer.

May I ask what does him being a former Marine have to do with it?
11:37 AM on 04/30/2012
Thank you ,as a Marine veteran of viet nam vintage I am so sick of the media always pointing out Ex-Marine,ex-sailor or any service member is suspected of a crime. do they lable a plumber, bank clerk, etc, hell no .Does being a former service member make them more likely to commit a crime?
I live in San Diego county and the media here (print and video) are really bad about this
Irealy wish the practise would stop.
12:41 PM on 05/06/2012
The media is only trying to bring exposure to the fact that many of your comrades (ex, retired, former) are in desperate need of mental health assistance and pyschological training after being trained to kill as an occupation. I suggest you encourage the media to do more so that the public will understand the danger and need for mental health treatment that many of you desperately need.

One often sees headlines featuring exmarines saving omen from rape or running for office or whatever. So what's the problem?
09:42 AM on 04/30/2012
Unbelievable the mayority of the News is domestic violent. Woman killed her family or husband killed his wife and children.Mothers murdering their children.WOW! Hiring hit men wtf is going on with people that they can't control themselves.
11:43 AM on 04/30/2012
It's not that it's that common, it's what survives the editing process and gets into a lot of news sources: It's what's called in statistics "survivor bias". Most people can't handle complicated things like the economy or national defense (most simplify such things by viewing them through various populist idologies) ... this is the sort of stuff that's easily digestible and causes fear ... the main motivator in contemporary America.

I don´t know if I agree with you fully, but there is a lot of truth in what you said.
02:51 PM on 05/01/2012
Absolutely agree the motivator in contemporary America - its the fear that the media loves to exploit and sell -
But absolutely disagree - Statistically we live in darker and more violent times and people need to wake up and hug their kids and discipline them and make them feel important and successful in life (I don't mean by money they make) OR we just keep walking around wondering why is so many people killing each other. Lets turn off the assault of violent video games and entertainment and stop breeding "do what ever makes you feel good" self serving society then maybe we could see less of this. In the past 15 years alone people started killing just for the sake of killing more than anytime in history.

"What makes the grass grow"? BLOOD BLOOD BLOOD
"What do we do for a living, ladies"? KILL KILL KILL

18 U.S veterans commit suicide each day, over a million in prison & many end up killing their wives or others. you can't spend years creating & programming ppl into killing machines then expect to just 'switch it off' when they come home & it will all go away. One day you'r in very real & immediate danger, watching ppl get their legs blown off & their skin burned, another day you'r walking through a shopping mall. I imagine the memories & constant nightmares would be maddening. I know ppl who are not Marines kill, & i know a lot of Marines come home stronger & more stable but its not completely surprising to me where their notoriety for killing spouses etc comes from.

During world war 2 Men came back from the war, went to work, or school on the GI bill and lived normal lives.

People who do not have violent criminal behavior do not cross the line.

Well put !!! but remember the military is but a microcosm of the American population..... Suggest you google "Project 100,000"..... Thanks to Lyndon Baines Johnson the requirements to enter U.S. Military Service has been seriously degraded by this program. And remember during/after WW2... "ordinary" men/boys were drafted into the Armed Forces.... We are now dealing with the Children and Grandchildren of the ANYTHING GOES "Hippy generation".

Yes, but most WW!! men were never kept alive the way they are today. Medicine has gotten much better but it still leaves too many men and women with horrendous problems. And I hate to tell you some of those men in WW!! came home very changed and not for the better. They were just left to their own devices. I just wonder how many did commit suiside and it was never recorded.Soldiers in WW!! who did not make it physically or mentally were not talked about.
