Jordan Ramos, Hawkeye Woman, Says Iowa City Union Bar Discriminated Her For Weight

Jordan Ramos Weight Discrimination Bar

A University of Iowa student says that a local bar wouldn't let her dance on a platform because she was "not pretty enough" and "obviously pregnant," despite expressing she was not, the Iowa City Press-Citizen reports.

Jordan Ramos, 21, describes herself as a plus-sized woman, but she never imagined her weight would become an issue at Union Bar, a downtown Iowa City establishment, where bouncers would deny her the option of dancing with her friends atop a small stage -- twice.

Ramos visited the bar on March 3 and again on April 4 and experienced the same discrimination both times, she said. The second time, a bouncer allegedly told her she couldn't dance because she was "obviously pregnant.

"They knew I was not pregnant; it was their way of calling me fat without having to actually say it," Ramos told ABC News.

And according to Ramos, other plus-sized women have had similar experiences.

The woman reached out to the Human Rights Commission in Iowa City, but according to the organization weight discrimination isn't illegal, ABC News reports.

But that's not stopping Ramos from taking a stand for herself and others.

"I understand that obesity is unhealthy, and I'm not condoning it," she told the Daily Iowan. "What I am trying to do is say that we are all human beings, and we all deserve to be treated equally."

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reached out to George Wittgraf, the owner of Union Bar, who said he was not familiar with the situation but disapproved of the employee's alleged behavior.

Nevertheless, Ramos is planning a rally in front Union Bar on May 4, where she says she hopes to ensure the bar not only makes a formal commitment to prohibit any form of discrimination in the future, but issues an apology to anyone who's received sub-par treatment in the past, the Daily Iowan reports.

This breaks my heart, but I can also relate. I believe that as a patron of this establishment, Ms. Ramos was entitled to have full access to the experiences and services the bar offers. By telling her "Yes, we'll accept your money but no, you are not allowed to partake in all we have to offer."

I've experienced similar discrimination and it is incredibly hurtful. No matter what I look like, if I am a paying customer, I should be able to swing from the rafters and do back flips off of a platform, should I so please.

This bouncer (and whichever other bar employees agreed with his decision) chose to comment on Jordan's weight based on personal preferences or subjective view of what is "attractive." Personal opinion should not shadow fair practices - period.

That's absurd. We live in the most litigious society that's ever existed. Allowing her to put herself or others in jeopardy is simply inviting a lawsuit. Being a paying customer doesn't purchase the right to participate in everything that may be going on in any given business; weight and size restrictions are not limited to this kind of establishment. How is this any different from, for example, a theme park that says one has to be at least four feet tall to ride a roller coaster? Or the blood bank saying that a donor must weigh at least 100 pounds? Or an elevator with a "Maximum Weight Capacity 500 Lbs." sign on the wall? Or an airline that makes anyone weighing over a set weight to purchase two seats?

I keep expecting people to grow up and eventually stop whining that "it's not faaaiiiiirrrrrr!" but somehow, it just keeps on coming. Perhaps by the time she graduates she'll have learned that being treated fairly and equally does *not* mean that everyone gets treated the same. But I'm not holding out a lot of hope.

Privately owned bars/clubs are not legally obligated to let customers do what they want inside their establishment. This is not discrimination because it is not about race, sex, religion, or something she cannot change about herself. Her two options are: 1. Lose weight 2. Go to another bar.

Actually, would a publically-owned business have the obligation to let customers do whatever they want, either? I would think all businesses are required to make judgment calls like this if it's a matter of safety, no? And I'd bet insurance companies would want their clients to err on the side of caution in cases like this, where no laws are being broken.

At least she got into the bar. In LA, she wouldn't get through the door.

Judging from her Facebook photos, she is a reasonably attractive woman. If she's not good looking enough, I wonder how many people are. Can the Union Bar do without the business of people who aren't better looking than Jordan Ramos? Just a thought.

I don't understand how almost a bunch of people are supporting the bar. Notice it's mostly men who are making the rude comments, and I bet they aren't Abercrombie models themselves. But I digress, a few articles also revealed that "So she [Jordan] staged a protest against the bar’s practices, after also learning that people of color, non-heterosexual individuals, and others like herself were being harassed and oppressed at not only this bar, but others around the city." So good job supporting not only a sizeist, but a racist, and homophobic bar as well.

This should not be an issue. Let her dance. If you don't like it, don't watch.

She is completely in the right, if she wants to dance, let her dance. Union is packed with disgustingly promiscuous underage girls, if they're going to prohibit anything maybe it should be that.

I got a quite confused poster saying "What?" when I put a different hypothetical Jordan up. Here, we have Jordan trashed because of her weight. No one cares about her as a person. She's just weight. So I put a hypothetical Jordan up bowing to people's expectations of how she should look using the criteria that's always changing, on the perfect looking woman And I put hypothetical criticisms up. Why? To demonstrate and important aspect of human nature. You're darned if you don't look perfect, you look perfect to one person, and you'll have a whole mess of people criticizing her. You can be the perfect weight to some, and another would put a jab in. You can wear the perfect clothes to one person, another would trash the color combination. You bow down to what color your hair is 'supposed' to be, and you're trashed by someone else. In short, no matter what a woman looks like, she never wins.

Ramos is planning a rally? LOL. The bar letting fat girls dance on stage would drive more customers away than any rally that she could plan.

What part of weight discrimination isn't illegal does she not understand? I'm a guy...if I wanted to dance on that bar and was denied should I lawyer up and sue discrimination against men?

Just because it is not against the law does not mean that it is right there dude.

I think it is, who wants to see a jelly belly on stage dancing around...can't hate us for what we like! She wants to dance go work out and get average and under, then I will personally escort her to the stage myself! Not to mention if they let 1, then every jelly belly is going to want to be on stage...slowly driving down business cause I guarantee you 90% of the men will stop coming if all they see is jelly bellys on stage!

This girl is an idiot cry baby. She was denied once and then tried it again. Sorry Fatty patrons do not want to see ur lard jiggling on the bar. The generation graduating from college have been brained washed into thinking every one is created equal, bullies dont exist and in the real world you will get hired for a job if your a fat girl over a pretty one.

Businesses have liability issues.....I don't see this as discrimination as much as an effort to protect themselves from a potential law suit.....pregnant on an iffy structure....if she and/or the baby is harmed.....HUGE liability issue.

And I am 100% sure that Jordan is probably several times better looking than the vast majority of these unclean, dirty looking, scraggly bums who are making fun of her. I am absolutely sure of that.

which is why she should ignore these dolts and aim higher.....seek the approval/respect of those who are worthy......this IMHO is a waste of time and energy......I'm sure many very successful people would not be "accepted" by this crowd, but had the wisdom to focus on more worthy goals.....not being able to dance on a platform at some watering hole is no great loss.
