Newt Gingrich Will Reportedly Extend Campaign For One More Day, Exit On Wednesday

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has already been counted out of the Republican primary race, but that apparently doesn't mean he will officially hang up the reins just yet.

According to a report from CNN, a source close to Gingrich says the former speaker of the House will officially suspend his campaign on Wednesday, May 2. Last week, he had announced that he would depart the race on Tuesday, May 1.

Gingrich had initially claimed that he would put off the suspension of his campaign for a week due to logistical issues, which had apparently complicated his plan to hold his final campaign event in Washington, D.C., where he could make the announcement surrounded by family and supporters. It's unclear what prompted the day delay.

When Gingrich finally does exit, he will leave Mitt Romney and Ron Paul as the last two candidates standing. Romney is heavily favored to win the nomination, and Gingrich has announced plans to give his support to the former Massachusetts governor sometime after the end of his own campaign.
